    The mistake Holmes makes at the very end is actually very similar to his mistake in "The Yellow Face". His cynical attitude towards women leads him to a rather erroneous conclusion both times. In "The Yellow Face", he assumes blackmail on a lady's part, when it's really a more innocent answer to the mystery. Her, he assumes Mary dumped her previous boyfriend...when the truth is he died.

    The beginning, with him, alone, not being able to shut out the input coming from every corner, is actually one of the few times where we see that being Sherlock Holmes, most of the time, is not a boon but a burden. Ties in with Holmes preferring to stay in his flat when he is not on a case.

    In this scene, honestly you feel for three people. You feel for Holmes, who has the most unique personality and experience and a high-intellectual mindset, which can make him feel lonely at time, and his overconfidence and emotional intelligence can result as it. You feel for Mary, at first she was impressed by Holmes’ excellent logic, but then feelings hurt when Holmes made the assumption that she dumped her former husband, without knowing the fact that the former husband died, that also shows some lack of emotional intelligence - because by observing the emotions on her face, Holmes should’ve know when it’s proper to bring a stop to the conversation, but he failed to do so... Doctor Watson, on the other hand, he was completely aware of the potential consequences and results, he tried to stop Holmes and interferes to prevent the situation from getting worse, but there’s hardly medicine to stubbornness, in his case he feels for both Holmes and Mary and handles the situation from a third person perspective.

    At first, I couldn’t understand Mary’s rage and thought she was being rude and overreacting. Then I rewatched the movie a couple of times and I realized that Sherlock pissed her off and insulting her on purpose. If you listen closely, you can see that he’s implying, in front of Watson, that Mary is possibly some husband-hopping gold digger. And then Mary clarified and said her previous husband died.

    • @marywenzel3199
      @marywenzel3199 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Sherlock flat out said that Mary ditched her fiancé because his ring was too cheap. That would be a bad enough insult in our time, but in the Victorian era, a lady’s virtuous reputation was her greatest commodity. For a woman like Mary, with neither fortune nor male relatives to provide for her, her reputation is all she’s got. To imply she’s a golddigger, Holmes may as well have called her a prostitute. Since Watson is at this juncture basically broke with few if any patients and a small pension, she is hardly going to improve her financial picture that much by trading governess wages and room and board for marriage to Watson. Therefore she genuinely loves him. Kelly Reilly grew on me as Mary in the second movie but I always pictured Mary as a blonde. Also she wouldn’t throw wine on a gentleman no matter the provocation. I do like Mary’s feistiness but that is modern rather than true to Doyle.

But people always think that Holmes just "guesses" and their secrets will not be uncovered by him. And they are always wrong. I think Holmes realized that most likely - he will be asked by Mary to use his deduction on her and she will be offended, hence he ordered his dinner beforehand

The French have a protectionist attitude toward their cinema and TV and I think we should be doing the same. I already notice the Americanisation of date references on British TV especially on youth programmes from eg "The 3rd of June 2000 and 12", to "June 3rd 2000 12", and ass instead of arse. We need to keep the British arse.

It's half-dare, half-game, and usually ends harmlessly enough. When someone attempts to play this sort of game with a person like Holmes, however, it ceases to be fun and becomes a violation of privacy provoked simply because they wanted to play games with a very dangerous ability.
      In short, people are intrigued by the idea of "mind-reading," but tend to be horrified by the actual practice, even if it's only accomplished by extreme deductive reasoning and attention to detail.

      @@InfernoBlade64 nah. Watson and Holmes both said it was a bad idea, but she thought she could handle it.
      Yes, he chose the worst assumption about her. He already expressed that he disliked Watson marrying her. But that doesn't change the fact that she literally dared him to use the one ability that has made him infamous among many circles. Mary is not being very clever here, and though he admittedly did not show much kindness or consideration for what must surely be a sensitive topic (probably on purpose), she has only herself to blame for daring an eccentric genius like this.

    • @OneBiasedOpinion

      I know this comes 7 years late, but I might as well explain since I'm here. :)
      To put it very crudely, Holmes has the dual blessing and curse of an extremely unique and acute form of ADHD, coupled with an incredibly intelligent mind that can use logic in ways that most people can't even hope to copy.
      The more detailed explanation is that his mind notices literally everything around him at an acute level of detail. Sight, sound, touch, smell, taste, he absorbs and processes _all_ of it simultaneously and with a precision that very few humans are ever capable of. His mind is then able to use all of this information to deduce incredible amounts of information about anything or anyone around him. The problem with this is that when his mind doesn't have something engaging enough for him to focus on (like a case!), it will start trying to do this analysis with _everything._ He can't "shut off" the extreme attention to detail; it's always there. And with no focus his mind will try to deduce _all of it._ So very quickly he becomes overwhelmed with data that his brain stubbornly tries to process nonstop, which I would assume probably drives him into a state of mania if he can't get it under control.
      So the opening scene with the watch appears to be showing him using its ticking sounds as a means of focusing through all the chaos, noise, and information which his brain is constantly trying to process. It _is_ a form of meditation, but it's designed to "ground" him so he can actually stay in the room and not succumb to increasing mania and anxiety from the sensory overload he's suffering.
      This is also why he doesn't enjoy going out when he isn't on a case. With no set goal to preoccupy his mind, it will try to analyze all of this data around him, which is enough to drive anyone mad. And for someone of his vast intelligence, it is very hard to find anything worthy of focusing on for any amount of time.

      Carlos A Martinez Hernandez quite a few people have suggested he might have aspergers (high functioning autism) because it is generally classified as very clever but not very good with people and having little or no filters, so they see everything and don't filter what they say to people.

    • @coffeekat5066
      @coffeekat5066 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Mischief157 It'd be nice if you could hold back on spreading misinformation, even in a relatively miniscule way. For one, aspergers is not a diagnosis anymore, it's just autism. Adding to that, autism doesn't make anyone inherently smarter. I'm not discounting that Sherlock may have it but if he does he likely also has Savant Syndrome, which obviously does have an impact on IQ and is exceedingly rare.
      ...The other possibility is that he's just extremely intelligent.
