Todays tollywood directors surpass even the bollywood directors in movie making may not surpass tamil cinema directors. All the hindi people can come south and learn one or two things of movie making

That is why he left cricket initially which shows he is not a selfish person going after glory. But it proved to be a failure... he wanted his son to remember him that he is not worthless. Becuase he knew that if he continued like this someday he will be ignored. Also if you think a little bit more he is inspiring his son by dying not by living. This is a bigger gift than a Jersey...if you remove the climax scene then what you said would have been true.But anyway this is my interpretation and I think it is a great film...
