  • February 3, 1945 the start of the bloody Pyrrhic liberation of Manila that turned the City called "The Paris of the Orient" into a total wasteland. 70 percent was caused by the imperial Japanese armed forces' savagery and 30 % by the mortar shelling of the liberating American Forces. The population lost an estimated 100 thousand unarmed civilians,1,010 American soldiers, and 15 thousand Japanese soldiers. 5,565 American soldiers were wounded and thousands of civilians and guerrillas were wounded.
