As Albert Schweitzer once put it, the preludes and fugues of the Well Tempered Clavichord serve as windows onto a superior reality. What they express is not really related to the world we inhabit or even the human condition itself. They represent eternal soul-states or the kinds of emotions a god would feel. Such was the capacity for expression in the art of the absolute rendered possible by Bach's meticulous compositional technique. It's so wonderful that Netherlands Bach Society can draw on a pool of such fantastic musicians who are masters of their instruments and able to interpret the master's intentions so poignantly. This lady is one among them.
What a magnificent fugue - Bach was certainly the master of counterpoint, and Christine Schornsheim does an excellent job at capturing the piece. Cheers!
I just wanted to thank NBS for the amazing work they are doing and specially for creating one of the most smooth and peaceful places on YT where people with taste for Bach's music can unite and learn together. I can say for myself that I have learned a lot being here for the last months.
And it the polyphony is so incredibly apparent in her playing... you can close your eyes and imagine that two people are playing on separate instruments. Bravo
This touched me at first listen. It's a great sight reading testament and not just that it gives you the emotion and respect to both the prelude and fugue which hope is coming through at the very end
magnificient instrument very well played and recorded. Mrs Schornsheim plays from scanned sheet music on her tablet and uses a foot switch to turn the pages it seems?
On those instruments there are two sets of strings, one for each keyboard. They typically differ in timbre and can the two manuals may be coupled together or uncoupled for a change in volume. Historically, in the 16th century, the second manual was also used for transposition.
The A-natural dissonance at 00:28 forms a minor-ninth with the bass, which in equal temperament is the harshest interval. But in well-tempered it sounds poignant. Chopin's favorite composer was Bach, and here in the prelude Bach sounds like Chopin.
it's wonderfully majestic and what a talent with more the acoustics of a gymnasium which is not common so there is a lot of space to showcase this work very good instrument very good sound also congratulations Madam you bring back a lot of memories but it was at the very top at the high perched rood screen and not at the harpsichord Johann Sebastian Bach to this architecture and its own apogiaturee and it is precisely this construction in the fugue that I particularly like I wonder if the instrument would not date from the 17th century by chance again my congratulations to all these magnificent songs that we hear

Bro needs to chill
She brings out every emotional nuance in the Prelude. Melancholy but hopeful both at once!
Christine should never be denied a harpsichord wherever she goes. She pours her soul into her fingertips.

Wundervoll gespielt. Danke!

This prelude is so difficult to execute properly. The ornamentation requires real skill. Beautifully played.
And it the polyphony is so incredibly apparent in her playing... you can close your eyes and imagine that two people are playing on separate instruments. Bravo
What a majestic pair of pieces! Played, also, on a majestically sounding instrument!

Excellent.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Christine plays beautifully
Something tells me that this lady loves to play Bach more than anything in the world.
Christine Schornsheim
Beautiful performance!
This touched me at first listen. It's a great sight reading testament and not just that it gives you the emotion and respect to both the prelude and fugue which hope is coming through at the very end
Tres belle interprétation bravo Madame
Gratidão a todos 💐
So good, and I love that something so eternally significant is being played somewhere so temporal as a basketball hall.
Splendid !!! 💐💐💐
magnificient instrument very well played and recorded.

Fantastic job guys! Great playing.
Holy moly she's a wizard! Great job Christine that was wonderful
Toll gespielt!
I was so engrossed in the playing that I didn’t even realize she is playing in a gym!
God is in Heaven. All is right with the world. Bach played this well is a mental and psychological tune up.
This fugue is one of my favorites in book II - really like the interpretation here. It's also a great challenge to play yourself :)
This seems to be a somewhat unusual basketball hall! And it is obvious that other sorts of playing also is perfect in this hall❤
danke
bravissima!
GREAT

The 48: my daily bread
What strength also in the game you play!
👍👍👍👍👍💯
Wonderful music, wonderful rendition!
An unrelated question: why do some harpsichords have two keyboards?
On those instruments there are two sets of strings, one for each keyboard. They typically differ in timbre and can the two manuals may be coupled together or uncoupled for a change in volume. Historically, in the 16th century, the second manual was also used for transposition.
the setting of the gym ruined it for me
Close your eyes. You’re here for the music, aren’t you?
Think of it as the best possible use this room could have been put to for all these years after it was constructed.
You think JSB composed this in a holy temple with angels inspiring him or what?

The harpsichord is a Bruce Kennedy from 1989, after Michael Mietke - a 17th century harpsichord and harp maker on which instruments Bach used to play.

Love it 💐💐💐💐
Christine Schornsheim really mastered the complexity and beauty of these two pieces!
Out of this world beautiful -- bravissima!
The tablet app automatically turns pages. Does anyone know how it is called?
I believe there's a pedal that she taps with her foot to turn the pages. See 1:06
It's biurefor!
Nice!
Amazing!! :)
These masterworks are not mathematical exercises, they convey enormous emotional content, and this performer gets that content and delivers it.
