    Love the UP! Been going up there my whole life for summer vacation. Having a camping family reunion this summer in the Grand Marais area.
    My parents are in their late 80’s and it’ll possibly be their last trip to the UP. They’ve been going to the UP since the mid 1940’s.

    Hey Dave,
    Thanks for the video! I spent 9+ years in da UP while stationed at K.I. Sawyer AFB in the mid-70's to early-80's. Best time of my life! No matter where I've gone in the world since, every time I stop for a moment, my compass needle still points back there! I hunted and camped in an area called the Cyr Swamp below Gwinn as well as my buddy's, Bill, camp off of Hwy 41 in the Traunik/Trenary area. Neighbors to Bill's camp, Craig and Mary, had me and Bill's BIL over for Thanksgiving dinner one hunting season. They lived in a "stockade-style" log cabin (logs on end instead of stacked on each other). Craig's joinery work was so amazing that once inside, it was difficult to tell where his doors were! He was definitely a skilled woodworker and Mary was a skilled cook! She produced some outstanding meals with her wood cook stove! Happy New Year and thanks for the memories! Great Year-In-Review video!

      @brianschindlbeck2807 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the very early 70s one of my fondest memories was having those huge B-52 flying out of Sawyer running fake practice runs over our cabin near East Jordan in the lower peninsula.

    • @larryhudlemeyer2617
      @larryhudlemeyer2617 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brianschindlbeck2807 Brian, You're right, there was always something magical about the sound and looks of the BUFF (B-52)! We lived off-base but still under the flight path of those majestic machines at K.I. Once, our toddlers asked what that noise was as one passed overhead. Told them, "That's the sound of freedom....was then still is now!" Have a great 2022!

    • @KnettersPracticalOutdoors
      @KnettersPracticalOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Larry, my Dad, who was shown in this video as being the meat cutter of the family, was a meat cutter at K.I.'s commissary for over 20 years until the base closed. He probably cut some steaks up for you if you ever shopped there. Thanks for the comment and thank you for your service.

    • @larryhudlemeyer2617
      @larryhudlemeyer2617 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KnettersPracticalOutdoors He probably cut up some roasts and ground some hamburger for us, don't remember having too many steaks back then! The U.P. was definitely a great place to be exposed to the time-honored tradition of the "hunting camp". We started out using a friend's cabin tent and cots with lots of bedding! One night (in the prevailing darkness) we built a bonfire in the clearing that must have stood 4" tall, shaped like a teepee. Once it got going, we joked that the Russians could probably see the heat signature from their satellite! So, we looked up and waved and probably said something stupid like, "Goodnight Ivan; wherever you are!" Truth be told, we really would have welcomed an outdoorsy Ivan and his buddy to camp. Providing we could have understood each other, we probably would have spent the night enjoying the fire with them, telling hunting and fishing stories, scratched and spit, and talked into the late hours about the ladies fair in our lives! Like I said, in our younger and dumber years. Spent a couple of hours warming one side and then the other while waiting for the fire to go out. Made sure it went out before we turned in for the night, nothing but a melted hole left in the snow to show for it.
      My buddy and I actually preferred archery season as it kind of automatically thinned out the hunters in the woods. We especially preferred archery season after listening to someone open up with what sounded like a fully automatic rifle on the first morning of one gun season! We moved quickly to put more trees and dirt banks between us and the sound! We figured someone from downstate had brought a "play toy" to the woods with them!
      Was telling my wife I had seen your site on TH-cam. She told me we should plan to make a trip back up there this coming summer. So, who knows, maybe we will! Take care....have a pasty for me....and have a safe winter! Lastly, your video also reminded me about the Ashley wood stove we used to have in our house in the Skandia area. Stoke it up at night, set the damper, crack open the basement door, open the two floor vents and get ready for a good night's sleep! Boy, what I wouldn't give to have a chance to cross-country ski in to camp right now. Sometimes a man just needs to embrace the cold....light the fire in the stove.... smell the coffee.... and just sit and think for a while. Thanks again for the memories!
      Oh no! I'm starting to think about camp breakfasts as I'm on the way to bed. Crisp bacon, scrambled eggs with cheese, sausage, toast-n-jelly, pancakes-butter-n-syrup, hash browns, biscuits-n-sausage gravy, hot coffee, ice tea, and Trenary Cinnamon toast! My stomach is rumbling!
