- Croatian consumers have begun a week-long boycott of major retailers in protest at rising prices. It follows the success of a one-day protest last week, and has inspired similar movements in other Balkan nations. Kristina Simich reports.

Prices depend on supply and demand but mostly dictated by pricing power (i.e. monopoly / oligopoly).
Because business owners did what happened in Germany when they changed the mark to euro. The government said that 1 mark is half euro and shops at the start changed it 1mark=1euro. In Slovenia these big corporates closed all the little stores. Now people have to drive 20 km to get to a big shopping mall. It's horrible what these clowns in the government are allowed to do. Power to the people 🇸🇮🇭🇷 🇪🇺
Where in Slovenia do you have to drive for 20km to get to the store?
That is the way capitalism works, maximise profits is their main goal.
Slovenia voted for it enjoy the EU and your corporate masters just like we all are
It's not the 20km. In the Yugoslavia days, the national Slovenian state supermarkets (Mercator, Emona) set up small neighborhood "satellite" stores to walk to for basics ... they operated at a loss, but this was because almost no one had a car. After 1991, cars became common (Slovenia now has more cars than people) and most of the subsidized little stores were of course closed as shopping centers were built and local private supermarket brands like Tuš moved in, plus the German mega-wholesalers like Hofer and Lidl. Eurospin (Italian) moved in later ... Spar (also German) had a bit more trouble opening stores; Slovenia has one of the lowest levels of EU investment and resists most brands from moving in. The only IKEA (in Ljubljana) took the better part of 20 years to nose their way in.
@@power4things Here in the US, we have small independent stores that operate in areas where many people don't own cars. They charge higher prices than the bigger stores, but people have to pay the higher prices, or take the bus to the bigger stores, which can take hours.

In every country, including Croatia, there is something called "agency for the protection of market competition". That agency is under government control. If retail chains operate an oligopoly, then that agency must react. Not only does it not react, it also hypocritically "gives us support for a purchase boycott" through the government. This agency, as well as all other agencies that further suck up budget money, is as useful as Monty Python's "time-wasting mineral exploration agency".
As George Carlin said, those oligarchs already bought and paid for Congress, state houses, they got judges in their pockets.
So there is your answer an over regulated market drives up prices so does increasing minimum wages.

Good Morning Croats! "A beautiful new day is dawning!" It's called the EU project. Don't worry now! "It's ain't THAT BAD!" It might hurt a little, but given enough time, you'll ALL forget about it. Same thing happened in Germany and Austria the next day after the start of the Euro. In Austria one used to drink a cheap coffee in a Julius Meinl store for ATS (Schilling) 6.00-8.00 or at a sit down place for ATS 12-25.00 (Depending on how high class a place was . I.e. a smaller cafe or a five star hotel). The next day after the Euro, the same coffee turned EUR 1.50-2.50 in a Julius Meinl store!!! The conversion rate was EUR 1.00= ATS 13.76.
In Germany a 100g Milka chocolate used to cost you DM 0.85-0.95 The next day in Euro? I can't remember seeing ANY piece of chocolate for under EUR 1.00!!! The conversion rate was EUR 1.00= DM1.95 So the price of a Milka chocolate bar easily more than doubled by the next morning. Funny thing is, I can't recall the same "fuzzy math" having been applied to wages, salaries, pensions etc. Somehow there the "official" conversion rates ALWAYS applied. This is a rip off! Plain and simple. Get used to it. Coming to a neighborhood near you soon. Welcome to the fair and beautiful EU!

@lindaviduka.....I don't know if by "they" you refer to the Croatian government or the EU, but anytime someone is luring you to join something long term, the downsides aren't mentioned much or skillfully minimized. The EU power members are few---acting like cult leaders who only want followers to comply with them, keep quiet, and not gripe or bring their problems to Brussels. Italy is a founding member and has been 💩 on for a long time regarding the migrant crisis....which is only one example.

It's not about increased prices - its about the same same product being 100-250% higher than in Germany. For example, a handsoap in German store DM costs 99 cents - the same handsoap in Croatian store DM costs 3 Euros. That's not normal. Also the salarys in Germany are like 100-150% higher than in Croatia.
Unfortunately in my clime it's a different story altogether, instead you will find some individuals who believe that they can afford whatever price on goods/services and go on to pay to the detriment of those protesting the high prices.
It's honestly a devastating situation we have find ourselves in over here and it's sad.
Kudos to the croatian people, you guys are doing great.
Have the same problem here but we have changed our shopping habits and only buy fresh meat for the dog and tp in supermarkets now.
Should never have joined the Euro.
I've done the same in England. Good alteration was my reason. I buy direct from the farmers
Prediction: will backfire, because after week they will go back and buy like it's Christmas season. Only way this could have worked if they permanently stopped buying from those stores.
EU has other plans. 1 million African migrant should resolve this problem.
we must not wage war among the poor, here those who gain are always the multinationals who pay little taxes and dominate politics. Well done Croatians, the united people have the power to change things
On a budget? Just do intermittent fasting. You'll lose fat, get healthier, and your grocery bill will literally be split in half without doing anything
People have to protest!
0:49 this is incorrect, Croatia joined the EU in 2013, but Kuna (kn) was replaced by Euro (€) in 01.01.2023
That's the stooopid thing government could do, switch its currency for foreign strong currency.
When the local economy is not even tied to foreign currency.
It seems Croatia is heavily relying on imported goods to cover up its bad fiscal policy from inflationary high rates.
I remembered that in Zagreb a pizza for 2 people was about $7-10 before using euros. Last summer I revised Zagreb, dinners cost about $75-100 for 2 people without wine. Certainly it was a expensive vacation for 2 weeks in Croatia. Restaurants in Vilnius and Riga are cheaper than Zagreb.
There are no "north macedonian" customers. The name for the people in that country is "Macedonians"
but half of Macedonia is located within Greece's borders so Im guessing they are "Greeks"? How do you distinguish who lives north and south of the Greek border?
@@CheekyBird888 Nah, this guy is just Greek or Albanian. That's why he said it
greece made them change the name of their country in 2013 from macedonia to north macedonia, so now they are known as 'north macedonians'. Why did Greece make them do that?
@ I would like to know that! Im not familiar with the history, so that's why I was curious.
🇷🇴Romania will follow on the 10th of February!
Can't the government limit the percentage of retail margins in stores?
There is no need for boycotts and protests, we need the government's desire to listen to its people.
In Greece, a 1.5L bottle of water costs 0.5c in Europe. it's a few Euro for the same bottle. Same size, same brand.
This while the politicians are shutting down farms in Europe.
Canada gotta do this too with all the fastfood restaurants
Stand up The People have the Power
Bravo Croația.
In Hungary the situation is even worse because multinational companies have raised prices much more because of the high taxes. than small shops. I'll give you an example. more than three euros for a 30 dkg Milka chocolate bar. in these shops. in another place that is not among the big companies. only two euros. These products are 30-40% more expensive than they should be.
Countries in Europe should not be in the EU, the EU is not for the peoples but only for the Benefit of big Corporations, to suit their Political agenda and support the peoples who have donated money to them so they are elected
Bravo Hrvati smo ponosni na vas!
Leave the EU simple
The EU really did not work out for Europe
Great ….people power
Solidarity is a great thing.
Not all the nations can do this.
