    Thnx. Answered all of my questions. Restoring a 70yr cherrywood desk my grandfather built and wanted to bring it up a level by lining the inside. Now I can with no worries. Greatly appreciated sir!

    Thanks for this! Just found your channel after you responded to my post on the Gerstner Forum about a handle repair. Putting glue on the sides first to prevent getting it on the bottom felt is a helpful tip! I bought Gerstner felt and had a friend who is a quilter help me cut it to fit. I'm going to use Titebond hide glue.

    Already did a Gerstner some time ago. Looks good. I am going to do something similar to a metal tool box. Going to put in a luan liner and cover that in felt. For all my tools and special treasures. Hide glue is very good and so is Gerstner felt.

    Just found your channel and page. Subbed both. Great content! I'm restoring and keeping a very old Gerstner leatherette 7 drawer. The felt is in pretty good shape except for the top. I believe in keeping with Gerstner restoration supplies but all I need is one piece of felt! Any alternative to 3 yards of Gerstner felt for just one piece? I don't want to use just craft felt?

    Are you using regular felt like what you would buy at a craft store? Or is there a type of felt you have to buy for jewelry boxes? Were do you get your hide glue?

    • @terrystoolboxes
      @terrystoolboxes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I did try craft store or fabric store felt... It did not work!! It stretched out of shape and was loose and floppy. I use sized felt especially made for lining drawers in machinist's tool chests. not jewelry boxes! It is stiff and thick enough to maintain its shape for cutting and installation. I get mine from Gerstnerusa.com, exclusively.

    Thanks for the video. What glue are you using?

    • @terrystoolboxes
      @terrystoolboxes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I use hot hide glue, as was used in the originals. I prefer the ground type, such as Behlen's or Mohawk hide glue, which can be found on Amazon and elsewhere. There are others available, but I do not recommend the liquid hide glue in squeeze bottles because of its cost and difficulty applying it.
      www.amazon.com/M-MOHAWK-M745-4006-Mohawk-Ground/dp/B07V7HRY7R/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=behlen%27s+hide+glue&qid=1567934307&s=gateway&sr=8-1
      It is mixed with water and heated in a small crock pot. I mix the water and glue in a quart size zip lock plastic freezer bag and suspend it in the water in the crock pot until the glue reaches a temperature of about 140 degrees or more. I then insert the bag and contents into a small plastic cup and fold the edges of the bag back and over the sides of the cup to reveal the hot glue, as shown in the video.

      Iain, I use hot animal hide glue, as they did on the originals. I have details about the process on my web site: Check Amazon or other sources. I prefer to use the granules and mix them with hot water.

    • @terrystoolboxes
      @terrystoolboxes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you plan to use the hot hide glue, you have some time to make adjustments before it sets up, unlike contact cement, etc. It depends on how thick a coat you kay down and how hot it is.

    Thanks for this! I've just applied baize to a table of mine and the glue has come through. I watched other videos on TH-cam where they said this was fine, and saw the glue coming through also on their demonstration. But now that it's dried, you can still see patches - darker spots - of goddamn glue on the baize, meaning the finish is blemished. Any ideas why this has happened? If there is anything that can be done about it?

    • @terrystoolboxes
      @terrystoolboxes  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sean,
      I had to Google baize and found that it is a felt-like material used to cover pool tables. The felt used in these boxes is stiffer and heavier than that. I have not experienced bleed-through of the glue when using it. I suspect that the material is at fault, rather than the glue or the application of it.
      I you used hot hide glue, it can be softened and removed with hot water. Try again. You may want to use a more substantial material next time.

    Terry, Can liquid Hide Glue be used?

    • @terrystoolboxes
      @terrystoolboxes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have never used it. It's way to expensive to pay them to liquefy it, and I love the way the the granules dissolved in hot water works. Other guys have used it with mixed results, but I just don't see the point...

  • @terrystoolboxes
    @terrystoolboxes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You can, but please don't! As one who had had to deal with that later, when removal was necessary, I would definitely discourage the use of wood glue. Hot hide glue is the preferred medium for installing felt and has been for over 100 years, and with good reason - It adheres well and is readily released with hot water. Wood glue is a nightmare to remove!

    Great video 🙂 I'm rather new to this kind of thing but love your work.
    I'm actually thinking of making a storage box from a Jerry can. I noticed you're using hot glue,can I use a hot glue gun? Is it the same thing? I always thought it might melt it 😅. I've seen self adhesive sheets online too. Any help at all is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance ☺️

    • @terrystoolboxes
      @terrystoolboxes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In a word - NO! The glue used in glue guns bears no resemblance to the hot hide glue used to fasten felt into a chest. How would you propose to spread the glue before it set up? Hide glue is made from the collagen in animal hides and is mixed with hot water and brushed onto the surface before the felt in applied. Self adhesive sheets suck! They stretch out of shape and stick when they shouldn't. I've tried them all...
