After skinning, remove as much of the meat and fat off the hide without putting any holes. Lay the hide hair side down on a flat surface. Use a non iodized cattle feed grade kiln dried salt to spread over the entire skin surface. Use a fine granular salt which you can buy at any farm supply store. Depending on the size of the hide it may take the full 50 lb bag of salt, spread the salt heavy. Leave the salt on the hide for a 3-7 days, after that time lift the hide up, shake off loose salt and hang over something so hide can dry. During the salt phase there may be some residual moisture on the hide as the salt is pulling the moisture out of the hide. Hope this helps, let me know and thanks for watching.

@@brownshomesteadharvesthouse what should we do to make the oil you apply and the skin soft

@@asikartal1758 after the hide has been tanned, when the leather is like” pizza dough feel” spread the hide on a table and use warm oil to oil the hide. Get a good oil from a taxidermy supply. Put you oil in a crock pot to about 140 degrees F and when the oil is warm, commence oiling. Dont go to heavy or light with the oil and massage it into the hide. After oiling let the hide rest for an hour then fold it skin to skin and set overnight. Unfold and hang so it can dry. If you dont have a tumbler, you will have to break the hide by pulling and stretching it. Pull it over the edge of a round corner of a table. Watch my video on tumbling caribou. Hope this helps.

I’ve got a bison and elk hide I’m tanning, I don’t have a drum but when in the process would be a good time to wash the pelt with soap?

I usually degrease and clean the hides before tanning them. Depends on how dirty, i will leave them soak for an hour or so and plunge them, rinse with clean warm bath and let hang to drain for an hour then tan.
