Yeah, prices are pretty insane. They're literally selling used 3DS systems for more than a brand-new Switch, which is just madness. I guess we just have a whole generation of folks that traded in all their stuff to GameStop and the like as kids, trying to get back those childhood memories with their old favorite systems.
It just seems like the prices are going up really quickly, I am getting priced out of adding any games to my Dreamcast collection since most of the good ones are more expensive than brand new releases.
The other thing too are games that get re-released. I was at a store that had a copy of Turtles in Time for a great price ($60 CAD) compared to other stores in the area which were asking $75-95 CAD for it. I almost bought it, then I remembered "oh wait, I have the cowabunga collection. I don't need this."
They had turtles in time cartridge only for $80 and they had a few of them. I kind of wish they would re-release it on switch but I played shredders revenge which was actually pretty good and gave you a taste of the upgraded mechanics. I totally forgot about the cowabunga collection too so they kind of have re released it.
that's crazy, picked up a wii bundle a few years ago for like $40. I think emulation is the way to go for people that want to just play these games without having to spend a ton.
Its quite a bummer that retro gaming went from a relatively cheap hobby to being regulated to collector's pieces. GameCube was a great example as I remember 5-10 years ago a lot of games cost next to nothing and now the prices are ridiculous.
oh yeah it was great even a few years ago, I got a dreamcast and a few games for under $100 but now any good game for the dreamcast costs about $100 or more.
While I do agree with the point that I don’t think GameCubes should be this expensive (especially without the box, a game and whatnot), the GameCube is a different system that has different capabilities in its own right. The Gameboy player is a big point people made in the comment section, also the scarcity of the cube compared to the wii, and with a DOL-001, the HDMI adapter solutions make the cube more satisfying to play on. On the flip side, the average CAD Price of a WiiU is like $120-$180, and it’s for very similar reasons to that of the GameCube. Between HDMI, backwards compatibility (like the GC has with Gameboy), low console sales, excellent library, the console has skyrocketed in price.
With how quickly it's gone up over the last few years it just feels to me like it's being artificially inflated somehow. The gameboy player itself is another example since it's also going for over $200 in good condition.
plus the virtual games that are transferred on the wii u make people want to keep it. plus it’s backwards comparable with the wii. gamecube + wii u = most compatibility
For context I only looked at the prices of established game traders and retail stores, I know there's good deals out there if you look for them but what does everyone else think?
I’ve been looking around for older consoles more or less for checking out prices. I’m glad that emulation exists because holy crap, the prices for older consoles are so bad.
Exactly even if you wanted to try some games, most people can't justify paying over $100 for a game boy advance cartridge so emulation becomes the solution.
@@jameydengineer Exactly. I had a GBA, the flip-open one specifically, and I remember playing a lot of Wario Land 4. I loved that game (despite being terrible at it). A part of me was tempted to get the console and game cart. But it turned out to be hundreds of dollars for a game and console my parents could afford when they could barely rub pennies together. It’s crazy how bad prices are for old consoles are nowadays.
I always recommend to people to get the Wii over the Gamecube because an hdmi adapter for a wii is 10 bucks vs 150 for a gamecube. However if you want to own a Gamecube specifically buy it. But for a gamer on a budget, get the Wii instead!
I took a look at the national price index chart awhile back and compared it to the PriceCharts of well-reserved titles. I found the ones worth anything followed rather similar trends, and as I remember when they tried making predictions by 2023 we’d be done with the pandemic; sure enough, that’s when prices started lowering back down because there was no longer any justification in blaming the pandemic when it had officially ended. Games are either still holding their value or even climbing up further, especially if newfound interest is garnered on the particular title for its playability and perhaps storytelling depending on genre. It’s basic economics to think of the used market on the basis of supply & demand, this stuff isn’t getting any younger and so with the heightened demand you’d have to account for the supply left in the world since this media has gone out-of-print for decades since the next best thing went out proceeding it. The Wii was a commercial success whereas had it not been for its follow-up the Wii U, the GameCube would have been considered as it regardless of how many people fondly had remembered it. The fact the Wii is backwards compatible means that people who only had that console could have still played GameCube (no duh), in other words they may be content with their Wii but still want to play those titles (which were only available when the GameCube was still out, only one year into the Wii).
Supply and demand is probably the biggest factor, a good example is the Sega Dreamcast and it's game library. It's getting harder and harder to find working dreamcasts and a lot of the games even titles available for playstation and n64 will sell for the same price or even more than new releases because the dreamcast version is usually the hardest to find.
The prices for individual games can get very ridiculous too. I went onto a retro game site and found some ps2 games for under $10 and up to over $100. Ultimate Spider-Man was I think $120ish american dollars, not even including a case or manual. However, I found SoulCalibur 2 and 3 for $10-$15 each and GTA 3 for $5 USD.
There are a few old Spider-Man games for ps2 that I want to play but are way too expensive. You can definitely find some good deals, I've been picking up a lot of ps3 games pretty cheap lately.
nah man it is legit crazy to me, even a lot of games that have gotten modern ports, why do the originals cost more? I just get the systems that are most backwards compatible and use them for everything.
I was at a store recently that had great prices in general & we went there because they were selling Switch $10 cheaper than the store we usually go to but while I was there, I saw Kirby & the Rainbow Curse & considered getting it until I noticed it was over $100. I get that it's rare but that's because I'm the only person in the world who wants it. I won't spend $100 to buy a game that requires me to plug my Wii U in.
The fact in seeing ultra old games being reshilled digitally on modern distribution platforms for 30 plus dollars tells me how greedy companies have gotten
As a collector, I do understand the hype of while that wii is a GameCube yes….. it’s not a GameCube. Your point stands but the satisfaction of owning original GameCube hardware can give people a feeling of completeness.
my point is that if you want to play gamecube games you should get a wii because it's way more affordable, some retro games are just really expensive and there isn't really a good reason for it.
emulation is ok for some but every single emulation device has one fatal flaw its near perfect emulation experienced players for a given game will notice right away when things dont feel exactly right and that ruins a game for a lot of players
Besides a few games that don't run good via emulation i sold.I use my wii and a crt for most older systems and or pc for newer with tons of shaders and honestly i can't look back
True but my point is that it's sentimental worth is getting too expensive for most people, there are some gamecube games I'd like to try but they're to damned expensive lol.
man i bought my new gamecube like 5 years ago for bout 35 dollars on ebay lmao people are going crazy for this i just bought it for fun to play smash bros the good ol way
I bought a Dreamcast around the same time just to try some of the games for $70 but now any good game for it is more expensive than a new release so I only have a few games for it.
I mean the Wii sold like a bajillion units compared to the Gamecube, so it's not really a shock the Wii is cheaper. Crazy to see how collectors have ruined everything and created prices like these because when I was a kid you could get old console games for pennies on the dollar. Now games are expensive as hell just so they can sit on some nerd's shelf and never get played.
Good point but even around 5 years ago the prices were way more reasonable, A few years ago I got a good condition dreamcast with some games for less than $100. I usually keep the game I've played and liked and get rid of the ones that I don't like and I don't think I've ever bought a game that I didn't play at least for a while.
This is not a rational market. It never has been. We love these things. There are other examples, eg in the car market vintage cars have fewer capabilities and cost more.
Well, not all wiis had gamecube support. Also, supply and demand. The wii sold way more than the gamecube did, therefore its cheaper because there's more of them out there
People that owned a gamecube during this era want to see a gamecube while they play their games, not a wii. I only own a wii because of what you just went over (i also only had a ps2 no gamecube back then) but, to each their own. Also, Dolphin (gamecube) emulator is damn near flawless yet these prices keep rising.
