    I've owned this lens for several months and it is without a doubt mighty impressive. I'm predominantly a FF Nikon shooter so the size of the 10 to 25 doesn't particularly faze me. I mainly purchased this lens for video but I've used it many times photographically. Highly recommended 👍

    Like you, Matti, since I bought this lens, it is the lens that is literally glued to my Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mk3. Before I got this, I thought to myself, who'd be stupid enough to get such a gigantic lens for the m43 system. Then I made the mistake of going into a store to try it out. I found out it was not as heavy as I expected it to be. But more importantly, that extra light that comes through the lens meant that it's like a Prime Zoom (a zoom lens with prime brightness) lens to me. And MOST importantly, I was amazed by the quality of the photos, they were tack sharp. I really only use this lens for photos, as I'm not a video person. I can say, after using this for over half a year, this is THE best m43 lens next to my Olympus 40-150mm Pro. The beauty of the m43 system? I can switch to something smaller e.g. Olympus 17mm f1.8 if I want to go light. m43 is a great system, I hope it grows through Panasonic and OM... thanks for your video. You're justified in saying it's pretty much the best lens out there!

      People always dog it for the size, price and range. But the people that actually use it find out that all 3 of these are not an issue.
      Size: It's only large and heavy if you're using a small m43rds body not designed to handle it. Fits like an absolute glove and feels almost perfectly balanced on a G9.
      Price: Costs as much as 3 QUALITY sharp Primes. Yet can substitute for 4-5 of them without needing to change anything.
      Range: 10-25mm a perfect range for 80% of situations. The lens is also so sharp that you can do a major crop and get 100mm equivalent range with very little loss in quality.

    • @jinwan3088
      @jinwan3088 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@overnightdelivery Totally agree. At first, I was one of the people who dogged it for size and price and never thought I'd get it. One day I decided (as a bit of a joke as I was hoping to laugh at its size on my OMD EM1 Mk3) to go into a camera store and test it. It was then I fell in love with it. While it is reasonably large, it was well balanced with a camera like the EM1 or the G9, and more importantly, it wasn't as heavy as it looks! And then I was blown away by the quality and the range! People have got to try it instore to get a sense of it. With this lens, I traded in my Oly 12-40 Pro, Oly 25mm and Oly 9-18mm lenses because this 10-25mm lens substituted those lenses (and I don't normally do much in the range in the 25-40, plus I kept my Zuiko 25mm f1.8 lens... this lens is now literally permanently fixed to my OMD EM1...

    Dear Matti, I love this lens for both stills and video. I've no complaints at all about its performance. On my first copy the sleeve between the mounting flange and the focal length scale came slightly loose , threatening the weather seal. Several people had this problem. I suspect and hope it was more prevalent on earlier models. I've had no problems with its replacement. Even had I been forced to repair the lens at my own expense I would have done so. The lovely images it gives are worth it to me. Thank you for all the help you give us. Hal Y.

    Thank you for your honest review. I would love to own this lens someday. Another host mentioned his [10-25mm f1.7] glue became loose near the base. Just a watch out for other owners. It was recommended to buy new and not used.
    I'm a new photographer and I've settled with the G9M2 starting with the 100-400mm lens for birding. It's been a great lens, however, like other reviewers, the focus gets soft past 250mm. However, it does enough detail at 400mm that I'm okay with the quality and price-range for my needs.
    My next lens will be the Leica 35-100mm.
    Any suggestions for a prime lens for landscape?

    I owned this lens, it’s fantastic, it’s almost as sharp as Olym’s pro prime lenses, and it covered very useful (20,28,35,50) @F1.7 all the time!!!
    Imagine you do not need other prime lenses any more, this lens can be used for all shooting activities in the city, buildings, street, portrait, indoor lowlight, anything… and as mentioned, the contrast is superb, much better than the 12-100 pro, the only thing is it’s too big, but not that heavy, you can add another 35-100 or 40-150 if you need additional reach, but as I only use one lens on one body with 2 systems so I still prefer 12-100

      @@A1Bokeh That lens has a variable max aperture and it has no aperture ring, so there are some things that are not possible. It's very nice, in video, if you can keep the same exposure through the zoom range. With the 20-60mm you'd have to shoot at F5.6 to be able to do that. However, I'm not saying the S5 + 20-60mm would be a bad choice, far from it, but comparing the 10-25mm and the 20-60mm is really like comparing apples and oranges.

    I've got it and love it. Its my main video lens but I've also shot stills as well on the G9. The size (for video) is just right - it sits in my left hand really well and reminds me of broadcast camcorders. It is a little heavy, especially when its part of a rig and the total weight is a lot, and it would be good if it had a little more reach but as Matti says , you can't have perfection. Re price, look out for second hand. It is so rugged it would be a good second hand buy.

My only gripe is perhaps the weight of this lens but it more than makes up for it by having exceptional optics and superb weather sealing. Hey....The lens is amazing. The f1.7 I am in love. but....I notice a flaw but it may not be that big of a deal if you wouldn't use this to film. I bought 2 follow focus units and I put one on the focus ring, and one on the zoom and what I find is that you can't change focal points and zoom at the same time. For example, if you are zooming in and turning the focus ring to a closer focal point, it sticks at whatever focus point you start at and then snaps to the closer focal point once you stop zooming in. If that makes sense. I don't know if anyone has pointed this out but changing focus while either zooming in or out should be something that I would think the lens should be able to do especially for the price. Has anyone experienced this or know why this is? Hello.....? Panasonic?

    I don't understand the hate with this lens unless your somebody that has G.A.S. and has to have 30 different focal lengths. People don't seem to get the concept of upfront cost. It costs about as much as 3 GOOD prime lenses and then you rarely have to ever change out lenses again. Absolutely love the simplicity of only needing two or three lenses to do it all. It's a tight fit but I can fit all my necessary lenses: Normal to long range zoom, a mic, and flash all in one standard camera bag. It takes long enough to choose the right settings when taking a picture. It's really lame when people have to wait on you to change to the perfect prime as well. And with a G9 Body this lens feels PERFECT. Not oversized at all. As a matter of fact putting smaller lenses on the G9 makes it feel more like a toy, than a pro camera. But I can appreciate the small lenses on smaller bodies. Which is why I also have a Gx85 if I need to travel anywhere.

    For my vídeo work I tend to use two Cameras all the time, and I’m happy to use the Nokton 10.5mm and 25mm f0,95 (stopped down to 1.2 or 1.4). I think that the Leica is a good option for anyone working with a single lens. But for the same price I bought the two Noktons (one used) and a Lumix 12-35 f2.8 for rainy days. And I understand that today there is a tendency to make the equivalence between FF and m43 also at the aperture, but I don't agree! In my opinion this is a mistake. In the depth of field Is acceptable. But aperture, in my opinion, is the measurement of light, and DOF is a side effect (also influenced by other factors). I understand that the aperture and the shutter speed are responsible for the composition of light (in optical terms). Even the ISO, I understand as an “extra” factor, of electronic compensation. Aspects involving noise and ISO should be dealt with in a separate chapter, related to sensor technology. I think that correlations and equivalences do not help at all and are not really important in the work of a photographer. Greetings from the Black Forest!

      No manufacturer has ever made a fixed aperture f1.4 zoom lens. There is good reason for that, and f1.7 is already an engineering triumph, as was the Sigma f1.8. At f1.7 this lens is already very large. F1.4 would make it huge. You would probably then say you would get it if they had made it lighter.

      @Centauri27 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@artistjoh Indeed. I think the f/2 zoom lenses are already a breakthrough. A f/1.4 version of this lens would easily be double the size and cost, for a mere what, 1/3 stop extra? Just underexpose by that much and boost it back up in Lightroom!

      @@manuelb8808 £3850 for S5 and 24-70 2.8, £2600 for a G9 and the 10-25, thats about as close as it gets, the 20-60 isnt bright enough at any point to really compare. So a sensible consumer would do their research, and buy into a more expensive FF system for the greater shooting envelope, low light being the strongest case, if that was what they needed. The S5 offers greater low light performance, but that should be obvious from the sensor size! But the G9's AF speed and burst speeds are way beyond the S5, really depends what someone needs. Personally I wanted the speed and system size mft offered, so having an option like this if I dont mind the size is excellent, and while it doesnt equal a FF 24-70 f2.8 it emulates it close enough and is cheaper.

    I wonder why you need a zoom for you TH-cam video. Why not just use a small prime like the Leica 15mm or 25mm ? You can bring 3 smalls primes with you for less money and space in your bag than this pricey monster lens.

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don't need a zoom, but I like it much better than three primes. I want to be able to change the angle of view, but I don't want to change lenses. When I take my camera, my one lens and the microphone I know I have all I need. Very simple set up that sits nicely on my tripod and I don't even need a bag.
      Especially outside changing lenses is an extra effort and more risk to get dirt on the sensor etc. Then I'd need three variable ND filters as well or I'd have to change the filter also every time I change the lens. Then after I changed the lens I'd have to make sure the exposure is the same as it was with the other lens, i.e. turn the ND filter and check the waveform. There are so many things to keep in mind when you are a making videos on your own, that you want to keep the gear as simple as possible.
      However, this is only my preferred way to do things and some may prefer three primes. Whatever works for you😀

    Crazy that this is a 10-min "long-term" review of a Lumix-brand tool, done by a Lumix ambassador, yet only has approx. 20 secs of any results with it. Sure, there might be results in other places on his channel or website or whatever, he claims to use it "every day," but 9 minutes of looking at your face should never, ever, ever be in a video about a tool. If this was a review of your face, I would understand. You use this every day and have nothing to show for it? Crazy.

Because EVERYTHING will be larger and more expensive if you want to actually take advantage of that extra light and shallow DOF. No way around it. Often times you don't need it unless you specifically shoot at night and aren't allowed to use flash.
