This video contains super cute footage of teeny turtles. The Western Swamp Tortoise, known to the Noongar first nations people as Yarkiny, is one of Australia’s most critically endangered reptiles. Once thought to be extinct, it is now hanging on to survival with the help of many enthusiastic supporters.
In this video you will find out what authors Cathy Levett and Neeve Blackham-Jennings are doing, alongside Perth Zoo, the Friends of the Western Swamp Tortoise, and others, to ensure the survival of this species.

This video was produced on Noongar Boodjar, the land of the Noongar first nations people. I respectfully acknowledge Aboriginal Australians as the First Australians and Traditional Custodians of this great country. Life in the Bush is situated on Noongar Whadjuk Boodja, the country of the Noongar Whadjuk people, who have cared for this land for tens of thousands of years. With the utmost respect for Aboriginal culture and deepest admiration for their connection to this land, I express my gratitude to the Noongar Nation and all other Aboriginal groups across this land for their knowledge and practice of caring for country. I pay my respect to the elders, past, present and emerging and acknowledge their continuing culture and contributions made to lead the way in strengthening our communities and environment into the future.
Thank you for watching and sharing, I am most grateful for your support.
May you connect with nature today.
Karen (Maree) Schmidt, Life in the Bush
