I’ve never heard a soundtrack more bleak and hopeless, but at the same time serene and calming/peaceful. It’s so minimalist in its approach. There’s no grand sweeping strings, no stings that give away gameplay beats, none of that. It’s just… I can’t even describe it properly. Gustavo is, simply put, a genius.

Music makes you feel like you want to cry for no reason. Only a genius can get through your heart like that by doing music. The music is fantastic. I loved the last of us. I think what make it so special was that I knew nothing about the game at all. I see it in my local game store and thought it looked interesting just from talking to the guy that worked there. I hadn't seen any pictures or videos so I went into this game 100% blind. This game blew me away. The roller coaster of emotions I felt playing this game was amazing. I don't think I'll ever feel the same about another game.
So true. Same for classic movies. All the way back to King Kong. Video games all the way back to SMB, Zelda and Tetris. Battletoads is a best of a platformer but most of us never got past the 3rd level. With the soundtrack it’s unforgettable. This is legendary, so glad hbo didn’t discard it.

Mr. Santaolalla has made some of the most down-to-earth tone-perfect music I've ever heard in a video game. The slow, tired guitar that is present in almost all of the music is the instrument of the heart.
I love the contrast between the guitar pieces that play during the cutscenes, etc, and the more electronic pieces that play during combat. The former captures the human - love, loss, hope, fear - the latter, the inhumane - death, destruction. They work together so well.
I bought the soundtrack without any interest of the game, but I had the feeling, that this would be good music. Now I have the game and Ellie is my all time favourite character :)
I am honestly surprised that this game did not make game of the year! GTA 5 is like the other GTA games, THIS game, the Last of Us is so unique there isn't anything like it (at least from what I have played). The characters, the story line, the music just goes straight to the heart and to me the soul. I am just shocked that it hasn't won all categories haha
His score for this game is one of the greatest ever put in a game. It's very understated yet packs massive emotional punch. Lots of unique sounds really help to sell the post apocalyptic atmosphere of the experience and the lovely melodies mean it's score that blends into the background when it wants to but also makes you take it notice of it at other times. That simple piece that accompanies the sequence with the giraffes is nothing short of beautiful.
I am 30 now and been on a gaming journey all my life and The Last Of Us is in my top 5 of all time, a long with Zelda tThe Orcarina Of Time, Final Fantasy 7, Metal Gear Solid 1 and Uncharted 2 Among Thieves.
It's so amazing. I.... I never had so many feelings. It's the first time than i'm if close relation of the characters. The music is a trips in The Last Of Us and i feel me in the game, in this story. It's so beautiful

He has such a distinctive style. After playing the Last of Us earlier in the year, I watched Babel and Brokeback Mountain this year, unaware that Gustavo was also a film composer, and immediately recognised the sound and connected that it was him. He has a really natural, organic style of guitar playing that really sets the mood. I think his best work was in Brokeback Mountain, where his playing just suited the film so perfectly and the subtlety of the notes almost brings tears to your eyes but his music on the Last of Us was also an amazing achievement in setting a new bar for video game artistry across mediums.
I have a dream when will TLoU ever be made, the director should be Alfonso Cuarron (Children of Men), screenplay by Alejandro Innarritu (Babel, 21 Grams, Amores Perros), produced by Guillermo del Toro and of course composed by Gustavo Santaolalla.

10 years later and I still listen to the score when I sleep. He did a great job on part 2’s score as well., The sadness and pain in the score gets me every time. It truly is a wonderful piece of music.
This may be my favorite game of 2013 but my favorite video game collection of all time. and when the last of us was going to release my birthday in June 14, I've never felt happy. The last of us has something inside the story and the characters are so inserting. It feels like watching a movie. But is all about fight to survive.
