That is the self timer. After cocking the shutter, pull down on the little lever, then press down on the shutter release, and the timer will start ...about 8 seconds later, it will take a picture. I would do it in manual mode, though just to make sure it fires. Hope that helps.
G Graham, you are right. At first, I thought so without much thought (I don't use much or any flash). However, later on I did realize it has hot shoe. So, you can mount, for instance, remote trigger on it, and it will fire off. Thanks for the correction!
