As a young toolmaker, this facing head was a tool that I was taught to respect. Seeing inside the head itself, I understand. Rugged but beautiful and the only way we had to face in the same setup you bore. Thanks for the video. I worked in a Finn tool shop in the early 70's and you brought me back there in my head.
Oh my goodness.... for years I was wondering if someone had the knowledge and courage to put together a Wolhaupter overhaul video. This is a true Gem of a video and belongs in the Smithsonian Institute or the Louvre ❤. Now I have a level of insight and courage to ever so carefully make an attempt at properly servicing an old Wolhaupter I picked up at auction about 20 years ago. Dear Sir, thank you again for taking the time and initiative to create this masterpiece.
THANK YOU! for publishing this incredibly detailed and informative video. I purchased a neglected Kuroda UFB-3S and was able to successfully service it thanks to the information that you provided. It now works perfectly. I was uncertain about a few things and I'm grateful that you addressed them in your video. It may be different with Wohlhaupter's, but the Kuroda manual specifies using an NLGI #2 grease for everything except the dovetails, which are oiled. Grease is supposed to be injected in the lubrication point on the top. Mine appeared to have never been serviced and still had the original grease which, like yours, had hardened and broken-down. It's slicky smooth now :-)
Thank you so much for sharing this great production. Your narrated video showing the fine part details, fit, and how to take the items apart and reassemble again are all very helpful =0)
Wow thank you so much for this video. I always wanted to try a Wohlhaupter. I really enjoyed seeing the inside and how it goes together. LOL you got it right I am dreaming of a boring head though I don't think they made a taper adapter for my machine.😖
Greetings, thank you for such informative material and for sharing information. Your video will help me a lot with the repair of the head with the same design that I came across in not quite working condition. Good luck in work, keep going. With all respect, Andrii.
Mahtava työkalu nähtävästi oikeissa käsissä! Tilattu. Vielä muiden taitojen lisäksi osaat kieliäkin, arvostan kovasti. Itselläkin Saksan kielen opiskelu varovasti aloitettu.
Thank you for your assistance today, for you have a lot of knowledge learned by experience doing many things. I can tell by looking at your hands. God bless you.
Thank you also for sharing these details, it helped me a lot when I got my 2nd hand UPA-3. I need to modify mine, as it is the type with a fixed shaft which has the MT3 tapper on it. I am having difficulties getting the head aligned in the lathe, to turn the shaft down. Could you (or anyone else her) please confirm for me that the centre 18mm hole for the boring bar is actually in the same axis as the milling machine spindle (when the head is centred up correctly)? It looks like the unit I have has experienced quite some abuse and something is not lining up correctly. There is a centre drilled into the top end of the MT3 shank, but it's been hammered quite a bit, so I am suspecting that this is why I could not get it to centre up correctly in the lathe. Before I correct the centre hole, I would like to know if my thinking is correct. Thanks
Excellent video.......I have a question for you ....unfortunately my upa3 has a 30 taper shank that is integrated do you think it can be disassembled from the bottom up because the shank is too large to dissasemble the way you did unless I was to remove the collar for the dogs which appears to be pressed on
Are You sure it is integrated ? It is impossible to put the UPA3 together if there is an ISO30 shank and it really cannot be assembled/disassembled from the other end. The hex screw inside there could be covered with "stuff". Just dig a lil bit more and I think You will find it there in the bottom. In case there is a collar and it is removable ... maybe there are some locking screws around ? My Wohlhaupter had a lot of gunk inside the shank and it took some archeological actions to get the top of that differential screw visible. All in all this unit is supposed to be serviceable and a press fit collar is something that is quite near unserviceable...
When used as a normal boring head the adjustments can be made by rotating the ring which has the 0.01mm scale. Note that this is 0.01mm from the diameter not from each side. Also, when used in normal boring operation, the head should be locked using the locking knob.
Hi Finno Ugric, congratulation for your videos, they are very interesting and I lerned a lot with them, I'm a machinist too and I have one of these Woholhaupter UPA3, but it has a morse 3 cone attachment, also I owner of the milling machine Schaublin 53 Almos the same you have, but it has an ISO 40 connection. I´m looking after an ISO 40 attachment for my UPA3, I look all the technical information from WOHLHAUPTER without any succes, can you recomend me were to buy such attachment??
Good day Finno, thank you for your very interesting video, I would like to ask you: is the spindle I see an NT30 spindle? Because it would be perfect for my milling machine! Also can I ask you where did you buy this Wohlhaupter boring head? I'd like to buy it for my milling machine, thanks in advance, Alberto from Italy.
This particular spindle is ISO30 or SK30 sometimes also referres as a 30-spindle. Dear child has many names. The differences are in the arrangement of drive dogs. The taper itself is always the same. Some tools require a longer drawbar but other that that they are all quite compatible. This head I found in eBay. The price for a boring/planing head like this with all the original accessories and the wooden box is in the neighbourhood of 1000 euros. These appear every now and then but they are never cheap.

I've never seen a vice mounted so far from the edge of the bench. What's the reason for this?
