  • This is a review of the Stihl MS 500 i , after six months of commercial use. The saw was used with a Stihl 36 inch, light weight bar primarily, as well as a 32 inch Stihl light weight bar for some of the time. It pulled the 36 inch bar with no problem and it cut like crazy with a 32. There is more to say....but I suppose you will have to watch the video if you want the full scoop.

    After buying and running max flow’s on my 661c/ 500i and red beards 261 foam filter, I will never use stock stihl filters again. The fine material that all of their stock/hd filters let bypass under them showed me all I needed to see.

    Nice chips. Sharp cutters with what looks like very good raker depth.

    I was doubtfull these were any good but once i got one of my own I want a couple more. Far easier to run all day ,I was hurt on the job and heavy saws suck to run all day. Great review.

    Yeah I love mine too. Great saw. The only minor negative I've noticed is that the thing seems to drink more gas than the other saws -- maybe that's where the power comes from :) Great video buddy

    Power to weight ratio as well as the ability to hit the top end instantly with the electronic ignition. The mounts can be stiffened with a kit and the max flo and larger dogs made it better.

      They are POS. The fact you have to buy extra shit to make a 1600 dollar saw work right tells the whole story.

    Dan, Thanks for sharing. I looked hard at the 500i a few years ago, but they weren't quite out yet at the local dealer, so I ended up with the 462. I'm really pleased with the 462, but I wonder if you ever ran that and what do you think regarding the 462 or 500i? We don't have old growth in this part of Maryland... so people think I have a monster saw running a 28" bar!! Realistically though, the 261 with a 20" bar does 90% of what I need done and it's a lot less wear on Wayno. Stay safe.

      Thanks for the comment Wayne. No, I have not run the 462's . I run husqvarnas a lot, and the only Sthil I run is the 500i ( Great saw!) Because the 500i is fuel injected, there is just not any other saw that competes with it for the power to weight ratio. That being said....it is more expensive and probably not necessary for part time use. It is worth testing however, and it is an enjoyable saw to operate.

    What bothers me about the fuel injection and the electronically controlled carbs is the repair costs.
    What's your thoughts on that?

    • @nerdsunscripted624
      @nerdsunscripted624 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@jamesmooney5348 I asked that to my Stihl dealer, they said the costs are about the same to fix electronic vs manual doing carb tuning. And they’ve only ever had to fix 1 fuel injected despite selling hundreds of 500i’s. And most of the time on the electronic controlled carbs they just need to reset the computer (5 minute task) and it fixed itself. They haven’t had any of the Mtronics fail yet

      @nerdsunscripted624 Well, that is interesting and good to hear, as i have a 400. I'm quite concerned about it failing and having to pay out big time, but I still run the snot out of it in the winter.
      Or, with all the good things you are saying, is because you're a Stihl rep or sales guys for them (😆😆😆)
      I bought one of the last 260's several years ago. My 250's would out run it bad!
      After opening the muffler up, it noticeable out pulls the 250's but it still runs slower/weaker than my original and rebuilt 026's.

      @@jamesmooney5348 that’s some strange behavior from your 400, it should be running way stronger than an 026. I just laid to rest an 028 (deep scratch in cylinder, would rather not spend money on it) and it was nowhere near a powerful saw when it was healthy. Great saw, but ran like a 50cc does, a bit weak. The 400 is like 68cc’s and the 026 is just under 50. If you’re only getting like 3-4hp like 50cc saws get, you should take it to the dealer, that should be under warranty (if it’s not outside of warranty period).
      I’m not a Stihl dealer lol, ironically I’m a piano dealer, I just love powersaws and making firewood, and I used to do tree work professionally when I was just out of high school. I like all brands of saws but I just prefer Stihl for the 70cc and up saws. I’ve been in the market for a new 70-80cc saw so I’ve been asking my dealer, some arborist friends, and reading lots of reviews to find the right saw for me (I’ve decided on 462 if you’re curious. I want a 500 but I set a budget that I’m not going over, and the 500 is over budget by just enough that I’m stopping myself. Should have the 462 in 2-3 weeks)

      I can’t remember who did a video on it, but someone did a dyno test and found that the stock muffler had the most power across the rev range of any of the available mufflers. That included modified stock, bark box, and the other main one I can’t remember.
      There was only one scenario where the aftermarket mufflers performed better, but his guess (and mine) was that they are a placebo effect.
      When you need to modify the muffler is if you port the saw. More air in means more air out, but being a two stroke you need back pressure and expansion chamber for it to run properly. You can’t just get rid of all resistance and claim it’s better for the saw. Did you port yours?

    • @jamesmooney5348
      @jamesmooney5348 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @nerdsunscripted624 Great reply, thanks. No, it's not ported. The hole in the muffler was so small, i opened it up. It runs quite a bit better. Meaning noticeably better in the cut. More torque and doesn't lose chain speed. I at this time, i like carbed saws better

      @@jamesmooney5348 The dyno test was with a stihl 500i as well as a 572xp. One carbed one injected. I prefer fuel injected two strokes to carbed. After years of running a fuel injected 2 stroke dirt bike I find they’re just more powerful and less to mess with. One less thing to worry about in the field.
      It’s possible that the 400 is an exception for exhaust port size. But it’s not necessary on the 500.
