We just got back home from a whirlwind past few months traveling all across Europe and Indonesia playing in some incredibly beautiful places in front of the most wonderful audiences. We will never take for granted how humbling it is to connect with people all over the world through the sound of our instruments, it still feels surreal after 17 years as a band! Today we're sharing this vulnerability through Daro's song "New Day". We hope you feel that sincerity in this live performance recorded at our favorite Brooklyn studio Virtue & Vice. Shout out to all the bass clarinet fans out there!
Here are a few words about the song from Daro:
New Day is an ode to rebirth and new life. It feels extra important to talk about the Iranian influences influences of this music, since it was recorded, performed, and released as the Woman, Life, Freedom revolution has been taking place in Iran. The song’s name and emotional content is inspired by the Iranian/multi-cultural new year celebration known as Nowruz, which takes place at the beginning of spring. The melodic ornamentation is influenced by the Iranian vocal gesture known as tahrir and the groove incorporates elements of an Iranian 6/8 dance rhythm. The revolutionary women and girls of Iran give us hope that we may one day sing and dance together in a world free of patriarchy and all systems of oppression, and we offer this music in solidarity with women in Iran and across the globe rising up against injustice.

By itself, the trumpet sound would be okay. But in this song it is magnificent, instantly I get chills!

@@captainkiwi77 Of course. But most jazz, especially the early stuff, does not attempt to take advantage of the wide range of expression that can come from different meters (time signatures). Dave Brubeck’s landmark album “Time Out” gave a glimpse of what jazz could be if combined with some of the expressive qualities inherent in compound and mixed meters. But there really hasn’t been anywhere near as much exploration in jazz or popular music, in my opinion, of the soulful expression that can be associated with meters other than 4/4 time.

Clarinet (and by extension Bass Clarinet) is actually Daro's first/primary instrument! He just mainly does sax for the band though and clarinets on a few songs.
