  • Chieftain Tank
    Chieftain tank being put through it’s paces at the Bovington Tank Museum’s Kuwait Arena during the Tanks in Action display.
    The Chieftain tank was the British Army’s main battle tank during the cold war. It was in service from 1967 until 1995 and was used during the Gulf War. When introduced it had the most powerful main gun and effective amour of any tank produced.
    The Bovington Tank Museum houses one of the largest collections of tanks and armoured vehicles in the world. There are over 300 tanks and armoured vehicles on display telling the story of the tank from its origins, through the First and Second World Wars up to the modern day.
    The Museum runs special events throughout the year including live Tank Action Displays in the Museum’s arena during school holidays and some dates in September. The display includes a number of tanks and informative narration.
    Facilities
    The museum offers excellent parking. The display halls are light, modern and spacious, offering free access for wheelchair users around the exhibits. The museum also has a very good restaurant and café area. Activities and living-history events are also offered for children at certain times of the year.
    The Tank Museum is located in Linsay Rd, Bovington, Dorset BH20 6JG.

    Nice video host, despite being no longer in the military service anymore. I think in my greatest opinion the Chieftain main battle tank is still very accurate and the most potent battle armor in the modern day warfare.

      There are 400, give or take (Britain GAVE Oman 400, not sold, not part ex for oil, nothing like that, they simply handed over 400 free tanks in the late 80s), Challenger 1s going spare because the Omani government want Leo 2s now. Whether they're paying for them or getting another freebie I don't know.

  • @rbagel55
    @rbagel55 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Yeah, it was successful because it never saw combat. Good thing for the British troops because I read that the 2 stroke opposed piston diesel engine was unreliable with a 90% breakdown rate. They would have been sitting ducks on the battlefield.

    • @thewomble1509
      @thewomble1509 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      It saw combat in Iran and Iraq, the iran/iraq war. Quite successful apparently.

      It had a 90% breakdown rate upon initial trial and service,it was modified and changed over it's life and became acceptable,always a little underpowered but it was mated to a great transmission.

    • @markjackson7650

      The tank was a victim of pure NATO bureaucracy. NATO demanded that all future mbts had to be fitted with multifuel engines, which led to chieftain being lumbered with that turd L60 engine. Funny how that NATO requirement didn't apply to the M60 or the leopard 1. Had the chieftain had a conventional diesel engine it would have likely been far more reliable, and considerably more powerful. The US and Germany couldn't allow that since it would severely hamper sales of their own tanks.

    • @kavehoskoui8292
      @kavehoskoui8292 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The tank was designed and built around specifications provided by the Imperial Iranian Army. They saw lots of action in Iran and Iraq war and there not much of talk about reliability then. Today, they are being fully overhauled and modernized by Iran. Many of the damaged units are now being repaired, rebuilt and refitted for active duty! First time I climbed on and sat in one (I was 9) was just before the Iran/Iraq war at the HQ of 92nd regiment. What a beast!
