- Our ceiling was leaking, Jack was 2 hours away so Naomi had to save the day by herself. In this video we also finish painting and renovating the first bedroom, we lay laminate flooring in the living room and even make a sofa.

Naomi and Jack got married in Summer of 2019. Naomi is a Medical Student at King's College London, currently doing an intercalated BSc in Global Health. Jack is a King's College London graduate, having studied Religion, Philosophy and Ethics. Jack is currently studying Law at BPP University doing the GDL. Jack has secured a training contract with Magic Circle law firm Clifford Chance.
Naomi and Jack are both natural entrepreneurs and currently are working on two business ideas. In addition to this Jack is a Data Analyst for King's College London, working part-time alongside his studies.

Well, those radiators have caused trauma to the Swedish people for centuries.. Welcome to our world! :) For the future, turn the water off, seal the pipes and keep the radiator level and upright at all times. They might be old radiators, but they will never fail you in terms of giving cheap heat. Never change dem for electric ones, but learn how they operate. Good job, and welcome to Sweden! :)
well yes old iron radiators were great but you can buy same radiator but made with much lighter material and better heat transfer
@Lola Montez Water.. from the hot boiler pan. Not hot if you dont turn the boiler on thay could be heated by oil or wood burning stove. There is no need for a plumber, but you need to "burp" the radiators and turn off the water to it before taking them off, it is a closed system. Most important of all is to keep them upright. I guess you learn the hard way.
@Lola Montez If you live in an old house in Lappland you need to be able to fix things like that by yourself. If you don't know how to fix things, you need to be able to learn. I admire the energy and drive of the new home owners. It will all work out fine!

To your questions, for this kind of heating system in Sweden the conduit is water. If you look at the previous video you can clearly see that the furnace is most likely wood fired, although it looks like it may have been converted from oil fired, and has a modern "accumulator" tank that buffers the heat.
Typically the radiators are connected to the tank, perhaps self circulating but most likely thru an electric circulating pump. The tank also contains a pipe spiral near the top that heats the tap water, and it usually also has an electric heating element powerful enough to provide hot water during the summer and keep the system, and the house, from freezing up if you're on vacation in the winter. If you're lucky it also has a secondary pipe spiral in the bottom for connecting solar heating.
The top of the furnace and the top of the tank is typically connected with a straight pipe that is also connected to an expansion vessel high up in the attic and to a three way valve operated by a mechanical thermostat down at the floor, that is also connected to both the tank and to the furnace at floor level.
When you fire up the furnace you heat the water in its own closed circuit and when it becomes hot enough the three way valve opens and you start to load heat into the tank thru self circulation. Keep your eyes at the thermometers, and stop firing at the right time before the tank is fully heated up, otherwise the system will boil and you loose some of that precious heat!
When the furnace cools down the three way valve automatically closes and the furnace can cool down without cooling the tank.
This system is becoming more or less standard in rural homes in Sweden. You can connect geothermal, aerothermal or hydrothermal heating, or any other heat source, to the tank, in the same way as the furnace, so it's truly multi functional!
We had wood boiler central heating with iron plumbing and 2000 litre hot water tank for heating and hot water AND about 2000 kg brick baking oven, which is VERY common for heat and cooking in Finland, especially east Finland. The best combo there is, but circulating pumps DO need electricity.
I live in Texas and I’m a Irish white boy and my wife is a beautiful black queen ( like Naomi is). It’s so great to see more and more interracial relationships in the world. @ Lola Montez: Actually Lappland is also a part of Sweden, a big part, around 25 % of all the land in Sweden. It streches from the border to Norway and Finland in the north, down to south of Åsele in the south.
And it’s cheap because not many people want to live there 😂
@Lola Montez I know what area they live in, and closest food storage is like 20 min away with car. 2 airports within 45 min away. I would say that you have almost everything within 1hr.

I grew up in Youngstown OH. You can get property there and in the surrounding area for less than $11,000. They are bulldozing houses in that area. My brother lives in Warren OH. He paid $5000 for his house with a double lot. It’s a big old mill house that needs some work but it’s 3 stories or 4 if you include the basement. It has a completely finished attic and could be turned into three separate apartments. Most of these type houses are going for $20,000 or less depending where you look. Some of the areas like where my brother got his house is under $10,000. You can get old mansions for under $50,000. This area is extremely depressed and after they pulled the GM plants out of Lordstown, it was two plants attached, the housing market took a giant hit.
Parts of West Virginia are pretty cheap too. It’s sad, I have friends that had to transfer to other GM plants and sell their homes at a loss or couldn’t sell them at all.

I said you can get houses for under $11,000 dollars. My best friend and some of my family live there. They are still bulldozing houses in Youngstown. Poland is a nicer area. I lived there for a few years but grew up on a farm on Highland Ave in Lordstown OH. He bought the house in Warren OH. It’s only a few miles from where I grew up. Yes it needed repairs but not $30,000 worth. It was move in ready when he got it. It was mostly cosmetic issues. There are plenty of houses in Warren and Youngstown that are cheap. They are old houses that do need work but my friend has had 4 houses bulldozed on his street and two were actually nice, old but updated recently. The first house I bought was in Youngstown. I paid $28,000 for it back in 97 and it was nice.The GM plant closing hurt that area really bad. That was the last major employer in that area. If you go to Bordman, Poland, Austintown or any area where there are great high schools of course the houses are more expensive. But you can find some gems in Warren and Youngstown for cheap. That was my point. No it’s not Sweden, but you said there were no houses in the Rust Belt that cheap and I’m saying there is.

(except for an insect that may be buzzing). I have a friend from Australia. I go with him to such a lake.
He did not think it could be so quiet on earth.
You do not have to go to Lapland to get absolute silence and absolute peace around you.
But it is guaranteed if you come north of the city of Örebro.
We might need to start a club for all of us who want to move. Visited sweden for the first time 12 years ago and fell in love instantly. Been back two more times and I cannot wait to call it home

Getting all the recording gear, thinking in recording everytime I do anything, and learning everything about editing, sounds and so on. I don't think I would get anything done on my house if I had to think that into my everyday. I might create a blog one day, since I like writing more, and the whole philosofical approach to living this way.

THAT INCLUDED: (1) a handful of out buildings full of various tools and supplies (2)an acre and a half of extra land (3)a house of full of various things you will not need to buy (4) a full basement with several rooms. Plus you don't have neighbors on top of you. How amazing and peaceful. Doing the renovations to make it how you want it just makes it that much better. I am hooked.

It'll be a real treat to follow you settling in, especially how you find life so far up north now when the dark months of the year arrives. Lappland is still magical in the winter, but in an entirely different way than during the summer... Stock up on candles and blankets and enjoy the dark!
I hope your real estate broker, or your neighbors, already informed you, but if they didn't here's some advice for the cold months to come:
Your chimneys needs to be cleaned and also certified at regular intervals by your local head chimney sweep. If that was not done in the sales process, check it out! The chimney sweep can also give you hints on the operation of your heating system and give you references to a good local plumber, if you need more help.
It looks like you have an old wood burning furnace with a supplementary electric heater for producing hot water during the summer. You also have an accumulator tank that can buffer the heat between firings, but you'll likely need to fire up the boiler at least once a day during a normal winter, maybe two times, depending on the weather.
Your house looks really nice from the outside, but those soft "tretex" panels you found behind the wallpapers and the windows that looks to be at most two pane, in worst case only one pane, gives me a vibe of the house not being too well insulated...
However, there was something that looked like window frames in one of your sheds. Are those maybe inner frames that can be installed for the winter?
You got the house at a really good prize, but it may become really expensive to heat in the winter, especially if you're not prepared! Get yore self familiar with the heating system now!
Firewood needs to dry during the summer to give decent output, you can still buy extra for a decent prize for this winter, but if you run out in February it'll be expensive.
Also, during this winter is the right time to cut down a couple of trees in your forest to get firewood for the next winter...
And get a homeowners insurance, of course! If you don't already have one.

@Lola Montez Not to sure about running back to mum&dad due to the cold. My experience is that UK houses are a lot colder and draftier during winter time than Swedish houses. The Swedish climate has always made it necessary to use construction methods that keep the cold out. Even very simple houses will be well insulated and double walled.
@Lola Montez Sure. The house is old and run down. No argument. But it has central heating and is clearly built for winter use. The cold will not be an issue.
Lots of other things are issues. Especially the electrical installations and the wet rooms. The wires are probably cloth spun. I would not touch those with a ten foot pole.
As to the price, it is partly due to the condition, but mostly due to the location. Houses in Sweden are not at all cheap. A standard house in Stockholm goes for 800 000$. Even in smaller town you might be paying 300 000$. But there are remote area in the northern part of Sweden where it is very hard to find work. All the young people move out, leaving the elderly. In these places it is impossible to sell houses and even retrieve the value of the building material.

Though Naomi is English she is also obviously of African descent. Her tenacity and ingenious way of using planks to hoist the radiator in position in combination with her heritage brings me to all my African travels and to the multitude of videos I’ve watched with ingenious indigenous Africans with limited resources using almost any object in unimaginably smart ways to accomplish a required task. You guys will most certainly find a way to deal with the cold, snow, darkness, and any other difficulty Norrland throws your way. It’s all about attitude and you’ve got the right kind. You should have removed the floortrims before laying the floor, as you should leave a tiny gap between the floor and the walls so the floor has room to move as temperatures change. If you don`t do this your floor might buckle in the middle of the room. The trims should be added at the end to conceal the gaps you left for the floor.
Screw that, rip up the floors, tear everything back to the studs, and redo the insulation, check the wiring, and upgrade it if necessary, check for wood rot, termite damage, water damage, double the joices, fix rip out anything that looks dodgy, and get it inspected.
They explicitly said that they opted to hide the gap with quarter-round trims instead, except at the door frame, and proceeded to use wedges to keep the gap.
