Whoever mixed the sound at this show needs an award
I was thinking th same. Th snare and bass sound lit!! 👍🏽
I’ve seen them three times and the sound was amazing every time! One of the best live bands that you can still see
yes. Rare for 1997. I like that snare sound. you never hear it nowadays, everthing is compressed on albums
Stanier’s snare sound is all stanier. No one pops quite as hard
that bass is a masterclass in DIRT tone, it's like every tour they played, the bass got more guttural and Stanier's cymbal stands got higher, bless up.
Love his tone
I just saw them open for KoRn a few months ago and they are surprisingly still sounding really good these days, even though Page is now in his younger 60s!
@@LeadMe2TheBliss Saw them yesterday. Heavy as hell!! Page is still killing it. Stanier got out of Helmet, but the cymbals are still getting higher haha
@@LeadMe2TheBliss😢
I just saw them a few months ago. Up as close to the stage as you are to the device you're reading this on. PAGE HASN'T MISSED A STEP!
Stanier cant be replaced by ANY drummer ever. His tight snaredrum + Bogdan's bass was epic. The "Stop'n go" riffs have influenced so many bands. Hamiltons voice is a bit too clean compared to the studio recordings.. The 'Meantime' album is an all time classic!!
bogdan and stainer were an excellent pairing. no one could touch stainer. that snare sound is him.
@@jimmyjames8611 A-fuckin-men!!
Facts!
I like Page’s vocals best this era and earlier myself. Nerd cool. Too much growl snarly later on / currently.
@@sidneyrotter5739 he became a vegan 👀
Whoever picked the set list needs a raise. Every single song is a banger; no fillers or unknown tracks.
The definition of “in the pocket” and “groove”
This to me is the perfect drum sound! No fat, just bones.
Perfect analogy!!
That drummer is hyper active, wicked beats ! Wicked sound , that drum kit cymbals !
Thank you King Stainer for showing the world a tuned up snare drum.
Aftertaste is a killer album.
Meantime, Betty, Aftertaste... Can't get any better set of 3 albums than that.
Yeah, I think it's my favourite Helmet album. Just a great, smooth listen from front to back and great production as well
It was one of my work albums for years. I framed a lot of houses with aftertaste and Betty cranked .
I love Aftertaste. Stanier said recently he didn't like it as much as Betty or Meantime. Too bad
@@Andrija_12345 that amazes me...his chops on Aftetaste are tasty af
That bass sound is pure gold! I love it!
what a bad ass drummer ...
Tony Valder Indeed.An absolute master.
TIGHT
Been one of my favorites for 25 years now. John Stainer is the man.
@@satevo462 He is so good!!!!
@@bwclark7758 he finds the pocket every single time.
So many bands were influenced by these guys it's unbelievable
What bands ?
@@rudysz6003 look at Silverchair’s Freakshow album. They were heavily influenced by Helmet
@@rudysz6003 most of the nu metal bands. Start with Korn and Limp Bizkit and just carry on
@@micklee5152 I agree, they are arguably the root source of nu metal 🤔👍 good call
Except Helmet actually rocks. They managed to groove heavy without the whiny lyrics and deplorable attempts at rapping :/
That snare tone is motherfucking perfect. Goddamn Helmet is fucking good.
Love Helmet. Even til this day at 40 yrs of age. Nothing like listening to some good old metal. John Steiner is god on a standard kit
If he's god and you cant spell his Name right... you prolly just called him dog.
Same here bro. I'm 44 and this Helmet era is still on top of my playlists. John is a beast here.
I saw this tour at Nottingham Rock City basement room. No support. Just them in a packed small room - it was fucking phenomenal. By the end Stanier was almost collapsing, a roadie was holding him up. The sweat was dripping off the cieling and walls. They were off the scale. So glad I was there...
He's a sweat machine. Check out Battles' performance at Amoeba
I'm a drummer and I still purchased an ESP Horizon because of Helmet.
Hey, me too! 🤣
Guitar tones to die for
One of my favourite bands. IMO, one the best bands mixing metal and alternative rock.
Love how long John has been using the yellow Tama kit.
HELMET was and still is the true alternative
flat out killing it - HELMET comes to rock.
The drums sound wicked!
Playing the hi-hat from behind his shoulder and smashing up a simple 5 kit like a boss.
The drumming on Birth Defect is just sick!
These were the times. Drumming beyond god!
An unmistakable snare by Mr. Strainer. Miss that tight snare sound. Yesss, when HELMET was HELMET.
Such a great groove & tight sound.
Stainer is the most influential drummer in rock music….yep, I said it
These guys sound so much better live than they do on the studio versions.
They don't have some big shot producer hovering around making $500 an hour trying to make him sound like Ozzy Osbourne's band that's why
They actually do which I don't normally say and that's not denigrating their album quality either
@@wokejesus6501 I believe they recorded their 1st album for $500. No joke.
@@onepunchflan3071 I agree. Both are just what they are, nothing more, nothing less
imagine them in 94 they were gods
TH-cams has best free concerts in the world!!!!
23:35 and beyond is why we lived in a golden era. Those people are having the time of their lives at this show.
Great gig, would love to have seen Helmet back then in this line-up but did see them in 2010 and even then they were really good.
Tic is one of their best songs! They knocked it out of the park.
That drummer is on fire!!! 🥁🔥😁🤘
That year at Hultsfredsfestivalen was one of the best. RATM the day before was epic. The story is that we, the audience, jumped so much that it showed on the Richterscale. :)
When HELMET was HELMET.
Even with the line up changes that they already had by that times? I think Helmet still been great to this days.
This my favorite lineup, but man they still kick ass. Got kicked out of bar one night in 93 for yelling at a cover band that claimed they could play "any of todays rock". Me and my pals kept yelling "PLAY SOME HELMET".
They are still helmet jackass.
angry ranger did they play any helmet songs ? 😂
Dirty Dave 😂😂😂😂
Los veré en casi un mes más por primera vez tocando solos en chile 🇨🇱. No saben la emoción que tengo helmet por siempreeee
This is the most underrated band of (it's) time....While Butt Butt bands with a ONE song catchy sound make waves for days and years and it was not even real meat like this....
I use to say that this band is called Helmet because you pretty much had to have a helmet on during the concert.... Good God)*#)*%& Watch out!
I was so fortunate enough to see them during this tour for aftertaste. Cuz I didn't see him during meantime or Betty which is my favorite album by them. This was when helmet was helmet with Henry Bogdan on bass and John stainer on drums. I'm not too sure which rhythm guitar since was with them. But God damn they were good back then. When Betty came out they were my favorite band. I miss Henry Bogdan and stainer but stainer been with tomahawk and now he's with that band 'battles'! Which is some really interesting stuff
minerva sst Pretty sure this is Chris Traynor on rhythm
Love this band!!!!!
Dear God, it’s like being in the center of the largest sun
Great gig! I was there, front row.
Lucky bastard
Lucky. Must have been amazing.
I seen them in London ontario in a small bar. Was by far the best band I even seen in tight quarters
Same here. Was up front.Hultsfred was such an awesome festival🤘🏾
lol what front row?
I caught this tour also..I was 17....man I seen some great bands when I was young.
Brutal- Helmet in the 90's was my little secret. Nobody got them
Who?? Helmet? Hell yeah!!!
This is the metal band that impressed Anthrax.
They even had anthrax's bassist on their line up 2004-2005. He recorded bass for size matters album.
edit: he didn't record bass for the album, it was done by chris traynor. but he played bass on the size matters tour.
BEAUTIFUL remaster!
🤟🤟🔝🔝👊👊🇧🇷🇧🇷🇺🇸🇺🇸
This is NICE. I will watch this many times.
I watch it once a day. Sometimes 2x
thanks so much for uploading this!
This is momentousness.
Just like your face.
Thanks for the upload. Loved these guys in the 90s.
They still put on a grest show.
Stanier was about to take off like a rocket.
We were just 10 years away from Mirrored
Funny, a lot of the Helmet fans I know somehow never really knew about Battles and Stanier's involvement- they assumed he stopped after Tomahawk' first run and an occasional TMOC project. Battles is the shit, even they appear to be down to a duo currently. Many tales abound regarding his cymbal height as it ascended over the years lol.
Yep Battles is John and Ian. Kinda always was tho lol
Wow. Songs posted & everything. Big Thanks
so many thanks a lot, bro!
oHHHH MAN,... Thanks for bringing back the memories of seeing Hemet play at "the old" 9:30 in Washington DC in the mid-1990's!!! I still say Helmet would aways put on the best live performances of that era!
Amazing show, also great blog, thanks !
Stanier's changing his style during this era to the "dance" style he uses in Battles with the swishing hi-hats and the footwork. Super fucking groove
Good tight sounding band. Always heard of them back in the day just never had the opportunity to listen to them
Thank you, this made my day/week/year.
Helmet乐队的音乐是最完美的!鼓手的节奏让人每个细胞都跳跃!
Stanier is a machine
4 Great Albums & Very Good B-Side compilation...Strap it On, Meantime, Betty, Aftertaste & Born Annoying...plenty to love!
Epic set! I saw Helmet with Jesus Lizard opening up and few bands can hold up after them but Helmet did, and killed it to! Meantime tour.
sounds kickass! :D Great remastering
that snare sound, holy shit. Still amazed decades after...
I was there.
I was introduced to Helmet in 1998, my brother loved them and bought me a ticket and i had no idea who they were are how loud they would be,but let me tell you they came out and kicked some ass in a small club in Ft.Worth Tx,i have been a huge fan ever since, but i did make a big mistake,i didn't take earplugs and was deaf for about 3 days 😂
They split up at the end of 1997 so 98 dusn't sound right
My favorite thing about this is the drummer having a freaking BALL!
Thank you for sharing!
I had you guys for three concerts this year. Sunstroke- outside Dublin, Hellfest- somewhere in France and in Jersey.
The only song this needed was my divorce sing @ExactlyWhatyouwanted
Along with this great version of TIC & Birth defect
Here's to 2021 and being to be together at such events
Divorce song 🤣like it
Epic set, Epic recording, Helmet rules!
I remember back in 1993 I listened this together with my skater friends, I just became a teenager, man it was cool.
Sounded like Page Hamilton had a cold or something. The chorus of Unsung was pretty rough. First band I ever saw live, opening for Primus at the Fox in Atlanta
I guess it might be because of not quiet proper technique and loud singing through the whole show + he sometimes slides on the pitch not hitting the right notes due to lack of in-ear monitoring which makes it really difficult to hear what is actually going on with the sound from the band on the stage
August of 95' right? Tales from the Punchbowl tour. I was 15 or 16 & got back stage at that show. I'll never forget it.
Grazie mille!!
Electric performance and sound!
Saw Helmet in the 90s, Betty tour, in Glasgow, could have shaved myself with the sound it was that sharp and loud as fvck
ahhh, just like I remembered them. Great vid.
so underrated. love this band!!!!!
Man I miss those Great Bands!!
There should be a Helmet cover band called, "The Strap It On's"
Boyz put in there work back then hard, crisp and steady for hours good fucken shit
daaaamn they sound fuc*ing good
helmet 1997 remastered wow talk bout rocking I love page h
Aftertaste is underrated! I think it gets over shadowed by Betty and Meantime ( as maybe it should). But still a great album
BAND FOUL: No Shorts. First violation, give each member the equivalent of your buyout.
so im not the only one who thinks shorts look bad on performers?
In the 90s, we wore shorts...often with boots.
I get what you’re saying, dude. That’s Chris Traynor from Orange 9mm filling in as a live guitarist at that time. Obviously, he’s kinda clueless to that initial post-punk / indie aesthetic of that Peter Mengede-era Helmet.
These guys were freaking great. They got lost in the TOOL but that's hard to argue with, they were beasting as well. But I never forget the roots. This is one we used to grind and they are badass. Let us not forget.
One hell of an amazing band.
perfect drummer. best riffsss
Yup jon stanier is no doubt probably the best time keeping drummer EVER. Check out his weird brainchild "battles" even his homie mike patton thinks battles is weird shit
Mike saying that says everything
@@onepunchflan3071 well yeah ...he's the best
um yeah birth defect followed with tic the sound of every song awesome beyond words
I Fucking love Helmet
as always... me too
Im with ya
I hope these band members, are still alive & not dead. 😌👀🙏🙏🙏
I kinda prefer the vocals clean and in the raw, as opposed to the studio versions, especially on milquetoast.
I just watched both and concur
Same here.
First time to really listen to them and i have to say goddamn they kick ass
23:08 O PAGE DEIXOU O FESTIVAL LOUCO COM 3 PALAVRAS!!!!
That snare punches through like a fucking hammer!
Quality stuff!
HELMET RULES WHAT A BAND !!!!!
This was the best line-up of Helmet tbh. And damn I wish I saw this live, being a Swede and living really close to Hultsfred. Too bad I was only 5 at the time lol...
best line-up without Mengede?
Are there earlier performances on youtube? I’m curious how it sounded back then. But this 2d guitarist is really pleasing. Great energy! And the guitar sound is unbeatable… the balance with all the instruments is perfect!
I have great grooves and good show!
Awesome thanks Almighty clock manager for cutting song off before best part
I saw them during this tour at Tipitina's in New Orleans
Niceeee, love Tipitinas, one of the best venues in the world!
Che gran gruppo
Best Helmet Lineup Ever!
