      @@BillyDeCristofano yeah man, ditto on Christopher Romero's comments. Most reggae music is played on acoustic guitars. With that reggae strumming style, those major and minor chords comes across to my ears like 7th chords and borderline jazz chords. After your lesson I have a better feel for it.
      What inspired me to come here was the guitar player for Megadeth named Kiko was messing with Dave Mustaine in the studio. He was playing these reggae chords that I thought sounded cool AF. Then Kiko tells Dave, "Good idea huh, for a new song".
      Dave slowly turns to Kiko and gives Kiko his famous snarky "stare of death".
      Here's the video title if you're interested:
      "Dave Mustaine REJECTS Kiko"
      Thanks for the lesson man!!

    I removed my middle finger to make that A minor chord. Now that my middle finger is gone, I can't make that A major chord anymore. Did I do something wrong? My girlfriend is mad at me about this on top of can't making A major bar chords anymore.

    Good lesson, especially for beginners. But if I can add to it... this is good for acoustic (or electric) but especially acoustic solo playing. When playing reggae in a band you don't want to play all 6 strings, especially not the lower (in pitch) 3 strings. The bass has that covered. Also just play the upbeat or ands (1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and) and maybe mute the downbeats but still strum to add rhythmic effect. Speaking of pitch my only critique is that you said go up from B to A. You are going down in pitch. We always speak of up or down in a pitch sense as it's music we are talking about. So if you go up to the neck from the 5th fret to the 7th fret you are going up a whole step. If you go from the 5th fret of your A string to the 5th fret of your D string you're going up a string, more specifically up a 4th. It sounds like nit picking but this is important to really internalize and think (the long term goal is be able to hear) the intervals or distance between notes and whether they are going up in pitch or down. You shouldn't have to specify pitch up is always up in pitch down is always down. Again good lesson and thank you! 😊

    I like reggae chords played through a hard rock, heavy metal distortion pedal. Reggae bands don't do this, run their guitars through high gain distortion pedals and or amps. IMO the reggae band that does this with some serious tunes will blow up as an underground band with some radio play. Just my opinion.

    • @BillyDeCristofano
      @BillyDeCristofano  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good call. 311 play reggae with distorted guitar on some of their tracks and it’s real nice. Worth checking out.

    • @ThisUnderWorldOfDarkness
      @ThisUnderWorldOfDarkness 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BillyDeCristofano Thanks for the recommend, enjoyed it much. I did a search on "311 band - reggae songs" and a mix chain featuring their reggae tunes came up. My favorite is _"Light Years"_ In the songs they're using distortion that I heard so far it sound like light distortion, which is much better sounding than straight clean guitars.
      If were to record a reggae song I would use a heavier distortion sound.
      What 311 did from what I heard so far, was blend light distortion with the reggae chords and went into rock progressions with heavier distortion ....which I thought was awesome.
      I heard some Ziggy Marley stuff about 10 years ago which did the same, only fused it with a house music club sound that I loved.
      I'm not the biggest fan of straight reggae ...but the fusion or blending of it with rock and other modern forms of music is the best, for my tastes.
      Thanks again for the video guitar lesson and the 311 recommend. Cheers!!

      @@ThisUnderWorldOfDarkness its not real reggae at that point… real roots reggae is very simplistic with the guitar being just for the rhythm. The reason why no band has distorted reggae is because it really doesnt work unfortunately, sublime and 311 were the closest but even then didnt try to hard to distort the reggae sound

      It’s tough to jump right into. Start with learning barre chords. Learn an A and Bm barre chord. Then practice a “double skank” strum rhythm while going back and forth between those two chords to start. Hope it helps.
