And Larian made the excellent decision to call the difficulty modes explorer, balanced and tactician to avoid players feeling judged for not wanting difficult combat. If you want the focus on the story and explore the world rather than challenging combat, that's an entirely legit way to play.

one tip i would suggest for spell casters or other range is to use your movement. For example, cast a spell or fire an arrow then move out of line of sight. The enemy will have to move to get to you. and that triggers an attack of opportunity from your melee.

I think a video like this might tip the scale towards picking the game up. I stopped playing D&D at 3.5, and shifted to Pathfinder. So while I have a vague understanding of things like advantage or stat saves, there's some stuff I don't know. And I wondered if not knowing the system would be more trouble than it's worth.

I can actually thank you for the guide not from this video but from Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous videos I watched months ago. Due to my discalculia(deslexia but with numbers) I avoid numbers like 1d6+2 was like "OH GOD NOT ALGEBRA AGAIN!" so your videos from Pathfinder helped a lot in convincing me to try BG3. I think 1d6+2 means I roll one 6 sides dice with a additional 2 in my bonus or something. Still don't fully understand tbh, but at least I know part of the games combat mechanics

    • @mystolon8156
      @mystolon8156 ปีที่แล้ว +3

1d6+2 is exactly that. So a roll like that will be anywhere from 3 to 8. The game will tell you the range for damage as 3 to 8 in the UI, but if you want to dig into how they get there, the combat log will break it down.

Fair and a relatively new concept. The play test for D&D next edition (it's complicated) includes weapon specific abilities. Turns out they wanted to make weapon choice more impactful, flavorful, and interesting than a slightly different damage dice.

I am brand new to this type of game. I played Witcher 3 and it completely blew my mind, so I figured I’d try BG3. So far, I am simply dumbfounded at the quality and detail in it, like how every single npc has multiple dedicated speaking lines. It almost feels like literally every moving character has a role.
Anyway, the combat has been extremely challenging for me, but something you said made me feel so much better. “You deserve to enjoy the game you paid for” Thank you for that man, I was hesitant to look up any hints thinking that I would be quitting or cheating. Thank you for this video! I just finished playing DOS 1&2 which I both found very approachable but it's been a struggle in BG3 trying to translate all these D&D words into something that makes sense to me. Like just the description of the Daze status condition: Has "Disadvantage" on "Wisdom Saving Throws", can't take "reactions" and "loses the dexterity bonus to their Armour Class". Removed if an ally "Helps" this creature.
It was extremely demotivating just hovering over one of my starting abilities and being met with some absolute laundry list of terminology that meant nothing to me. Some of these you can't even hover over to get more information like Reactions or Helps

Awesome explanation! I’ve never played tabletop or CRPGs before and your guides have been incredibly helpful in getting to understand the basics!
It’s one of those video game genres that has always interested me (mostly due to the role playing fantasy of it) but I never actually attempted to play them, mostly because every time I researched a bit I only heard horror stories about how “unfriendly to new players” X or Y games where, but BG3 seems like the perfect place to start.
Also super nice that you don’t actually tell us what to do but mostly just give advice. So many guides for these games claim to be for new players and all they do is restrict your playstyle essentially telling you that you either do what they say or you’ll fuck up/you’re playing wrong. And quite honestly I think there’s fun to be had messing up and learning or simply playing sub-optimal things that are fun regardless.

The reason 5e is so good is because it has evolved since its creation in 1974. They have gone from very complicated system (2e) to a munchkin system where the goal is to have as high attack roll as possible (3 and 3.5) and then they tried to fix that with 4e that no-one plays. And they landed on 5e which is kind of a compromise (imo) between 2e and 3.5 plus some cool features.

This is a good video in terms of covering the fundamentals, constraints, math involved with combat. That said, what does it mean in terms of applied strategy? Just think a good follow up would be working through an actual combat scenario.
What makes sense to pre-buff? Should we send whole party in vs 1 or 2 first? Where should you position characters beyond just high ground? Should you concentrate on lower HP enemies before higher? Could go on. Haven’t seen anything really talking about combat aside from the math…the game covers this for us already

The most adorable thing is seeing you turning around and whack the hog as Gandalf

I was very annoyed with that thing and knew it would almost certainly die from that, so that was a weird bit of spite on my part.

I've been playing since 1st edition D&D, even played some Chainmail once though my only experience with 5e is via Critical Role. That said (your favorite saying. :P ) this explanation of combat in BG3 was extremely informative and helpful. Thank you!

Is it just me or is there no BG3 playlist compiling all your videos? Would have loved one to binge watch them all.

Great for a newb like me. Suggestion: on death saving throws, you don’t explain the “three rolls” system in enough detail. is that one roll per “turn”? or three rolls all at once? If you “pass” the three rolls, what happens?

I'd just like to say a huge thanks for all these BG3 videos you have done. Every class video has been such a wonderful insight into how they work.
All your explanations are so well delivered, even a D&D novice like me can understand what you mean.
Thanks again, I've become a big fan of this channel 🙂👍

Hey if you could go over some of the basic 'lore' type things (if possible or you haven't already) I would love that as someone who knows very little about dnd
Stuff like if they actual levels mean anything (I was interested by the ability scores) and I really loved the lore aspects of the class videos :D
