@Kevduit How does the game perform for you? Because the main complaint I have noticed and from tech youtubers mainly is the game's optimization. Almost all of them have reported low performance on cards like 3060s, 1060s and AMD/Intel equivalent (even the Starfield RX6700XT variant that comes with the games has a bit of a struggle). Because performance is quite an issue with the game when most people can't or don't want to get an high end card just to get a stable framerate.

    Kev,
I have been an avid viewer of your content for years, and I have taken a lot of inspiration from what you produce. You are highly entertaining but informative, and your voiceover work is second to none. With this video, as always, very well done.
Thanks to Starfield's ship builder, I have started a channel of my own that has received (for me) an unprecedented amount of attention. And, believe it or not, the vast majority of the feedback I've received has been very positive. I do not have the experience that you do, nor have I reached the same level of production quality, but for some reason, (most) people who watch my content seem to enjoy it.
I have over 500 hours in the game now, with the majority of that time spent building and flying my own ships. I've gotten quite good at building ships, and have a lot of experience tuning ships for different roles. If you're still enjoying Starfield, and you need a ship that can get you through any space encounter on Very Hard difficulty, basically any of the ships that I have published build guides for would suit your needs perfectly. I would be more than honored for you to follow any of my builds and use them in your playthrough.
Cheers Kev, and thank you, as always, for your excellent commentary and content!

Limiting the world or zones you get into allows for much better details and depth.

    • @Kevduit

This is what I've been saying. If they just ditched the obvious buzzword that is "1000 planets" and just did a solar system with actual planet to planet space flight and 4 or 5 handcrafted skyrim sized areas to play in the game would be 10000% better and probably actually been a 10/10 game. As it sits now it is a very 7 or 8 type game.

  • @zgama6511
    @zgama6511 ปีที่แล้ว +4

The cyberpunk levels of hype and the fact it was announced as an exclusive immediately put me off of this man and I'm glad to see I was right on it not at all living up to expectations. I mean it doesn't look bad don't get me wrong but it's just the same Bethesda formula but in space. Apparently this was in development for 8 years and the dialogue is on par with Skyrim and older fallout games that came out I believe more than a decade ago at this point. And I get that it's part of the charm I guess but I find it difficult to care about a story when the voice actors aren't really into the script or the writing isn't the best. And when you have games like red dead redemption 2 that were in development for similar times with brilliant dialogue and some of the best writing I've ever seen in a game it kinda makes you wonder what they were doing in that time. I know that's not the most fair seeing how starfield does have a massive map so I bet a lot a time and money was dedicated to that but even so one of the biggest issues with Skyrim and fallout (for me at least I don't know if anyone else feels this way) is that their stories aren't really fun to get involved with they don't really have that depth or value to them that other games have.(fallout new vegas was alright but thats just because you can be an evil bastard lol) The lackluster stories along with the combat that gets old around the 20th quest just makes these games such a drag to play. Who knows maybe mods and future updates will bring more to the game but it definitely isn't worth buying a console for lol. But hey I mean if people enjoy it they enjoy it to each their own I just don't see the appeal lol

@@kye4216 my man the game was in development for 8 years and is basically just fallout in space. Not even I was expecting them to be that lazy and I have a very poor image of Bethesda already. It's just the same lackluster writing and story with a just okay game. Bethesda combat basically just boils down to pointing and clicking until an enemy is dead popping into a menu healing 4 times then moving on to the next enemy. Its serviceable yeah and if the story for any of their games was even half way interesting to me I could look past the combat but they always suck so I'm stuck with hours into a game I have no desire to finish. If that's your style of game then that's alright but you have to admit this is terribly mediocre for how long it was in development. The games alright but it's got so much holding it back for me on top of the fact I'm not gonna buy another fucking console to play a game that's essentially fallout 4 and the outer worlds if they had a big baby.
Edit: no hate or anything just feel the game was lazy

    • @kye4216
      @kye4216 ปีที่แล้ว

@@zgama6511 Thats the type of game they make. If you dont want a Bethesda RPG then yea you're not going to like it. But you cant say that makes the game bad and lazy.
I dont even really understand the fallout comparison. What is similar to fallout? just because there are guns?
its a completely different universe, completely different factions, dialogue system, locations, skill tree, enemies, weapons.
the only similarity is the settlement building system, but i dont see why that is something that should be exclusive for fallout.

The funny thing is that Bethesda fanatics have swallowed this garbage, and now justify it by saying that there is a filled world there that is interesting to explore. While the main problem of Starfield is just that this world is not interesting to explore, the integrity of the world is not felt due to constant screen downloads, empty planets, there is no need to do anything at all, because the main storyline can simply be run in 18 hours. Thanks to Bethesda for the fact that I can safely go through Fallout 4 and Skyrim (which are much better made initially with their spirit of exploration and discovery) with their thousands of modifications.

After 30 hours, I really love this game. I accepted the package and it's one of the best RPG out there. Your review is so good dude, and I hate TH-cam reviewers mostly because they just invent negative narratives for a weird public. Have fun with the game you all, I barely scratched the surface in 30 hours, the content is huge, exploration rewarding. Not perfect, as said in the video, but a hell of a good purchase when it clicks.

Technically the game is only instanced by worldspace borders because the coordinates are based on your ship, no clue why Bethesda tied the map loading to the ship and not the player, but yeah. Once the ship unloads, the game crashes. Hence why the worldspaces when you land are 8km by 8km with the ship in the middle. They are also connected despite what initial people tried to spread based on testing from an xbox lol. So technically, Pete Hines is right, you can walk on.

I think that's what people are ultimately getting fed up with Bethesda about. The constant need to have mods to improve the baseline. I enjoy playing all of the elder scrolls titles as well as fallout, but it sucks that they just can't make something that doesn't require an unofficial patch or quality of life fixes after all this time.

One thing I somewhat disagree with - I think the skill system is much more intuitive and consequential compared to Skyrim. Skyrim has great presentation with the perk chart and how it directs progression, but other than that, it's functionally not limiting you in any way (in terms of skill-based actions) - meaning, less tradeoffs. So far, I feel like leveling up in Starfield means you can give your character either some new flavor or abilities that can tweak gameplay depending on your playstyle. It further reinforces itself as you can't get into the nitty gritty unless you focus on what you want to invest in first. Challenges are much more explicit about what you have to do, giving you direction on how you might want to roleplay efficiently to unlock further ranks, while I feel Skyrim is absolutely the pinnacle of a spam fest. Perks being flexible and fun, but not always having a real long-term impact. Like, sure, you can be gun guy really quick but that's just an early game benefit with specialization. You have to figure out which unlocks complement your gameplay and play into those strengths over time purposefully. Eventually, just shooting a handgun all the time is going to cap off once you max one of those skills out, so you'll have to branch out and find ways to open up that gunslinger build further with your own combinations.
In Starfield, it's much more valuable to choose a background that actually gives you certain skills right off the bat, because the skills themselves give you key abilities early in the game. Such as: pickpocketing not really being a feature until your character knows how to do it by having that skill, having a stealth meter that gives you better tactile information about your positioning, or even using certain types of equipment like boost packs, mods, etc. And they're all contextualized in the universe too, in my first ten hours had a few cases where my traits, background, and even a skill came into play with random encounters that thematically fit the archetype I was playing (Bounty Hunter). I don't know, I think I prefer the hybrid system over simply doing the skill, because it requires some planning to optimize how you feed into those trees / tune your playstyle at much larger level. It's a similar mixture of unlocks to Skyrim, but I think it's more focused overall, a lot more systems that gradually reveal themselves.

Love at the moment you're describing the consequences and people not reacting to what you do until you pull out the grav power and everyone starts shooting. In Skyrim, not only do guards and people react to you open carrying a weapon, a harmless attack like a shout doesn't aggro them besides voice lines.

I can't wait to see the results of modders creating their own settlements, planets, moons, etc. The things I was disappointed about were: no land vehicles, no seamless space to planet travel like in No Man's Sky, no ship flying around in planets and moons, and no mechs or mech-like suit similar to Power Armor in Fallout. I really hope Bethesda will add these things in updates or DLC.

  • @JeremyRichard82
    @JeremyRichard82 ปีที่แล้ว

A couple of things. I agree that Bethesda upped their story writing game during the main quest.
But completing the main quest is just the beginning. Start new game plus. See what happens. They've invented a whole new level. I can't say why because of Spoilers. But you'll know when you see it. And see it. And see it. And see it.
Ship Combat. You are supposed to suck at it, but that just means you have no place to go but up. It takes time to get your piloting skills up and I'm 100 hours in on my 4th Main quest playthrough (same character) and I finally feel like I am a threat. Some tips: Keep your speed at the center of the white reticle on the left to max turn speed. Get "Starfield VATS" asap to start leveling it and target shields. Boosting breaks Lock Ons. So wait until they have lock on, boost, then immediately cut back on power to save for more boosts.
The Skill system. I agree with your points. However, you can't cheese this system like you can in Oblivion or Skyrim. You can't whack on Shadowere for 3 hours to max 1-hand. You have to use the skills to rank up but more than that, it creates a leveling loop that I want 5 things every single time I level up, and I'm level 60.
Great review. But we are all just getting started.
Do New Game Plus. Can't wait to see what you find because it is next level on every level.

I really am happy you're calling it as it is with starfield instead of mindlessly residing in one camp or the other. One thing that really turned me off to listening to reviews about this game was just how many people mindlessly praised it or bashed it for the same issues their preferred games had, or for needless things that don't matter. The mindless praise is just sad, but the unfair bashing is just as sad.
I remember all the arguments and rallying cries about how graphics don't mean anything, effort and style does, but since starfield isn't flawlessly pretty and realistic it sucks, even though the games other people compare it to usually sacrificed something on the way just to have pretty graphics. God of War Ragnarok was pretty af but it's entire second half was painfully lackluster. Cyberpunk was pretty but then they also couldn't make even the most basic of things work without a crap ton of massive updates.
Stuttering or a somewhat bad launch is something people visciously mock but if their favorite game happens to be Cyberpunk, No Man's Sky or New Vegas or something, then stuttering, breaking, and disastrous launches (New Vegas wasn't that bad but it is known for some bad bugs, at least in the beginning) is perfectly fine.
Starfield has less than stellar npc and companion interactions but games like Cyberpunk speedrunning your emotional connection to your character's bestfriend (who we're also shown the death of in a trailer of all things) in a single cutscene is perfectly fine.
Starfield's factions get critiqued but other factions in other games, if they even have any (another let down by Cyberpunk, not even having a faction system), get passes because those games had more time to cook after release or something.
I can go on and on. It really is just tiring that every major flaw this game has can be forgiven in other games, or outright ignored. You get one decent game like Baldur's Gate and suddenly you're not allowed to enjoy anything that isn't it.

My main issue with Starfield is really a small and very personal one which I can avoid by just playing the game as the looter shooter it was designed to be, which is something I enjoy anyway. The small annoyance that will sit in my brain forever is that there's a space trucker background, a couple of articles of clothing with "space trucker" in their name but the hauling missions are pretty simple drop offs with no special conditions besides a deadline to meet and no additional risk of pirates showing up to add some excitement. Just kind of a bummer that the flavor of "Spacer Trucker" kinda falls apart when you actually haul cargo but it's not really a deal breaker for me and I'm sure a mod will expand that playstyle.
Hey, after the update I saw a special job board in Deimos that has jobs for the spaceport itself, including resource gathering for the station, so it seems like there's more space trucking stuff being added!

I think this is the first time i have to disagree with what you say about a game, the exploration is definitely not as good as you make it out to be, heck most of the planet are barren with no life and anything interesting are randomly generated, heck i remember thinking i gone back to a planet i been on before but it turn that wasn't the case. the fact that spaceship is only good for space combat and force fast traveling and making you go through dozen of loading screen, not to mention there is a fuel limit for how far you go even though the fuel itself is unlimited so it make you go through even more loading screen, the main questline in my 12 hour experience is pretty much go fetch this piece of a artifacts and quite possibly the worst part of all of to be time at the crimson fleet where your companion for the quest suggest betraying the leader and i agree to it, he ask me again to make sure i still want to go with it and even told me that the leader will replace with two other important character and when i thoughts i can through with the decisions, the companion call it off and these were what i can response with.
    1)all forgotten
    2)i'll think about it
3)fine but you owe me a big favor
None of which were what i wanted to answer and it pretty much a force agreement, i wanted to ask why he suddenly change his mind or even say he got cold feet and that made me uninstall the game a SECOND time, and that because i really want to give the game a chance to possibly redeem itself to me but instead made it worse as now i don't feel like my choice matter, and i wasn’t expecting it to be a big deal, just a change in leader and dialog, that it.
And for anyone who say "you should play longer to get to the good stuff" i will not do that, if a game take that long to get good than it not worth it

It's strange, the first half of the review is a weird jerk-off sesh with the game, then the second half is mor eactual focused analysis? Like the amount of times Kevduit called someone a "nerd" cause they weren't excited about a Bethesda game is crazy. But even then, the praise feels so unearned? Like congrats, they made the base-building on the level of Subnautica? Calling Starfield "stylised" when it's visually bland and generic, and doesn't stand out at all in comparison to Prey, The Outer Worlds, No Man's Sky, basically any game where they'd provide genuine competition.
I mean, what's with the comparisons to Fallout 4 and 76 too? Of course a 6 out of 10 is gonna look better than a 5 and 3 out of 10 (respectively), that's such an absurd viewing point. The Outer Worlds would've been the best choice if you genuinely wanted some kinda level playing field in comparisons, or just keep talking about No Man's Sky and it's mechanics. No, the “why would you want to explore the planet anyway” comment is just a poor attempt of excusing Bethesda for their laziness and lack of creativity and it’s a disgusting anticonsumer practice. We gamers get hurt by that logic and should NOT advocate for that, ever. Bethesda would have created a much better and engaging world by shredding the number of explorable planets to perhaps 20 tops, and make them either fully explorable or at least the landing points connected, somewhat what Mass Effect Andromeda has done, with more hand created content and less procedural generation of places to explore and side quests.
But that is just wishful thinking, the game has already been decided and not much can be done about it, there is only so much that modders can do to try to fix a finished product, and Bethesda is known to leave the game in hands of the modders anyway, not even bothering fixing their own game unlike what CDPR has done with Cyberpunk over the years.
Honestly, fanboying Bethesda will only get us more of this, and less what we actually deserve. This game feels and looks like a 2010 remaster, more than a new gen 2023 game. Disappointed with Bethesda, hope TES6 will be a good change.

As someone who is 200 hours into this game, there's plenty to explore. You have to give to this game what you would give to Skyrim or Fallout- you have to suspend disbelif, buy into systems and immerse yourself in an imperfect experience. But, that said, if you can get off your high horse, there are some excellent sci-fi stories- I mean HOURS, hundreds of hours of exploration and replayability. Not every game is a 10/10, but some games are worth a Gamepass subscription or $60. Not to mention I can't believe you compared this game to Cyberpunk- Cyberpunk was HOT GARBAGE on release, and to even compare this to that is to say you didn't play one, or both, of them.

Thank you, mate, for the great video!
I literally yesterday had an argue with a "content creator", who's video was structured around why is NMS better ("At least you can land there"), I just asked him to flip the switch - what was he expecting and preferring? - huge, empty rocks with nothing to do or indie-style same thing on mor eor less same places, or thus approach...
Well, as the poet once said - People are strange...

I may have been a bit harsh on the look of this game from your first video on it... this video helped clear up some issues I was having with what I saw in that video.

My problem is mostly with the writing. It’s hard to roleplay anything but a very by the book happy go lucky would be space adventurer most of the time. Same thing people freaked out about in FO4. It’s just as bad if not worse here, there’s just no voice to make you think about what’s being said.
Also the story setup for the main character and companions is weak or borderline nonsensical. Like huge tracts of core gameplay don’t really fit with the cast we have.

Once modding tools release, I'm sure someone will create an alternate start mod like for Skyrim or Fallout 4. This would allow you to start literally anywhere, without having to be a part of Constellation.

I don't necessarily think the writing is bad, it's rather the exploration of dialogue options, cause you're right... you are just so one dimensional in this game, when you SHOULD have options. I wish they'd gone with far more choice and consequence

@@kye4216 it’s not just that there’s a good guy or bad guy section that are totally separate that I’m looking for. I mean multiple ways to play through the same content. There’s not multiple ways to play through most of the quests I’ve done. Either in actual outcomes or in the way it feels. It just feels like the player can be one way if they accept the quest. More or less, which is not how BG3 or TW3 or some other RPGs feel. Every game is different, but I wish Bethesda got better at that part of writing.
