I got my permit on my 18th birthday and my license the very next day. I’m now 44 with 26 years driving experience. I started driving a trash truck, then started hauling fuel for a large truck stop chain (the red one). Now I’m making over $100,000/year. I got my wife started hauling gas and my stepson is delivering beer at 19. Lots of beer delivery jobs will hire a driver helper with a CDL faster than anyone else. So guys get out there early in life if you’re pretty sure that driving is what you plan on doing.

High school kids should do ride alongs with drivers when they are 16 and 17 and get to see the good, bad, ugly, learn about working on trucks. School does not have to be all books and written test. Sad but the only thing I really learned from public school was how to read a book and memorize the stuff enough to pass the wriitten test and after that most of it was forgotten. probably learned more math just doing this job and learning balance sheets and cash flow and business. Something the worthless public day care school never taught us

You are always a great source of knowledge… question for u though…. What are your thoughts on those 4-6 weeks cal programs and the ones offered by some local colleges that offer a 12 week to 6 month program? Am almost sure u may have done a vid on that before…can’t remember and too lazy to look…😂😂😂… thanks always

All schools just teach you the basics of driving a truck. They only teach you how the book says to get your license. Try to find a school that has manual transmissions. There’s still lots of smaller companies out there that only have manual trucks.

Hi Mike, I am 17 right now almost down with highschool. I want to get into trucking right when I turn 18 and I think the best way to do that is going through a community college that has a cdl program. At the end of the program if you are one of the better students they will set you up with a company they are connected with to get you your driving first job. This is what I would do but, I hate the state I live in (CA) and I do not want to be stuck here getting my experience until I'm 21. I want to move to another state but I have not been able to find a community college that will hook you up with a company and I think that is the hardest part about having a CDL under 18. What do you suggest I do?

Here in Indiana, you would just go to a driving school. Cheaper than college. All driving schools have connections to get you hired on locally or over the road.

@@MikeBRollinHi Mike, thanks for your reply. I haven't thought about that so I will look into it. I was wondering would a company hire me once I completed the school even though I would only be 18? I think most people in the driving school are over 21 so they wouldn't have a problem.

I have no idea. It wouldn't surprise me though. East and west coast people pass some weird laws.
