Since 2013 up to 2022, this video is to me the best ever published out there on Epub ebooks. Just amazing! Thank you Eric for your generosity. #Stayblessed
Thank you. I really appreciate that comment. As both a novelist and a web developer, I think it puts me in a unique position to one of the few people who really care about publishing AND also care about the quality of the XHTML code of an ebook. I want the writing to be good, but I also want the underlying structure of the code to be sound.
I’m a software developer with over 20 years in the industry. Obviously I know html in and out. First off you took me back with XHTML and the “C drive” haha I haven’t heard those terms in ages. Second even though I’m a know it all you are really good at explaining code to people. Most developers lack this skill. I watched your whole video and while most of it was known, I still was impressed by your delivery. Lastly wow bro your production quality of this video was amazing. Especially by 2013 standards. Why did you leave Disney? I actually live in Anaheim about 4 blocks away. Great video man. Keep it up!
Thank you for the compliments. And unfortunately, I didn't leave Disney voluntarily. I was part of a mass layoff of the internet team in 2012. They let about 100 of us go that day, including about 90% of all the Cast Members I knew.
Thank you for your excellent tutorial which is clear, very informative and of high quality. Even though we are now 2022, your tutorial is still very valid. To be honest, it is the only tutorial which reached me on how to craft an epub from scratch. Excellent job is done, I surely want to see more tutorials coming from you.
Finally, an *actual* tutorial about an *actual* ebook. There are plenty of tutorials but they are using the wrong applications to make their "ebook". Like i was watching a video and the title specifically said ebook but what they made was just a PDF file... I feel like the people who upload these types of video don't truly know the difference between a PDF and a EPUB file. Also, I recommend Sigil for editing your books. It automatically does some of the things for you, such as fixing the manifest in the content.opf when you delete/ add pages. But, you'll have to manually to the book title, publisher, etc. The newest Sigil is all done in HTML and can even allow for a preview window to be on the side if you set it as such.
Good video, Eric knows how to talk about the material. Better than any other ePub video I've seen so far. Putting my own novel into the files now, will drop by again when it's published.
Excellent Video clip! Sorry for chiming in, I would love your thoughts. Have you considered - Tarbbatigan ebook master Tip (should be on google have a look)? It is a good one off product for learning how to create an ebook without the normal expense. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my close friend Aubrey finally got cool success with it.
Thank you so much for this video. Having prior coding experience is helpful, but you have simplified the ebook formatting process for myself and many others. Awesome advice!!
Hey youtube is not letting us view the epub file link you created. Is there somewhere else we could access your epub templete? Thank you for your time.
Ok, I tried the video. The HTML part was no problem. All went well until the very end. Followed instructions to a T, put the mimetype file in first. However, the Winzip file won't save it with mimetype at the top, with the same file hierarchy that he shows in the video, making my epub useless when I put it through FlightCrew (FC also said the mimetype file needs to be uncompressed, yet Winzip For Mac automatically zips it when you add it, unless I'm missing something). Notes: I'm using the most up-to-date version of Winzip For Macs, while in the video he's using an earlier version, and one for MS, so maybe that's the difference. Anyway, I give the video a thumbs-up anyway because he does a good job of teaching the material, and it's easy to follow. Thanks, Eric.
Awesome video. Thank you so much for making it. I've been wanting to sell my own epub versions of my books (ie. not a Kindle or Smashwords edition) and I wanted to format them to industry standards. I already know html and I couldn't believe how easy it could be (easy, but time consuming lol). You explained what needs to be done perfectly.
+Engineerboy100 In all honesty, I have no idea. Theoretically it should work, but I write novels; I'm focused on books that have very few images. If there are stipulations or caveats surrounding image-heavy books, I'm not aware of them. Sorry I can't give you a definitive answer. I just don't have experience with books that are heavily image-laden and I don't want to mislead you with incorrect information.
I just ran across your video and I have been using Sigil to do ebooks. I found I can port your example epub files with no problem. I can follow your tutorial using this program. I can also work on the raw HTML files using Coffee Cup HTML Editor id needed, but I like Sigil because I can switch the view to see what everything looks like. (page view, code view) This saves going into a browser.to find errors. If you have an error you have the option to fix it manually or let Sigil fix it for you. But again, different strokes for different folks.
I did forget to mention that I use all open source software and Ubuntu Linux as an OS. I do most of my writing on an Asus i7 laptop and have a small Samsung chrome book for when I am on the road. Light weight and long battery life. I added this in case someone out here might be wondering what hardware/software I use. Oh, and thanks for the nice well put together video.
Excellent video. But how can I change the font of the book. I tried to use 'Mangal' font (google use this font for Marathi, Sanskrit and Hindi). I can see the 'Marathi lines' in jEdit and in webpage. But the lines are not showing up in ebook reader(UB Reader). What is procedure to change font.
Font styles and sizes are selected by the reader in their ereader device. This isn't something you can override. You want readers to select whatever they find preferable.
Thank You for replaying. I think I did not wrote properly what I want... How to wrote... french or Japanese epub using your sample epub file? How to change english language setting to french or any Asian language ?
Other than covers or an author portrait, I don't put photos in epub files. This is really about making novels. If you need an epub that is very photo and graphic oriented, I'm not knowledgeable on that.
A great tutorial, thanks for the work you did to help us improve both our ebooks, as well as our technique for creating them. One thing I have discovered is that epub design has advanced far beyond the abilities of the readers to present them. I create my epubs on a Windows platform using Sigil, then test them in Calibre, all good. But when I export them to my Android equipment, I test them with a variety of different epub readers, and for each reader it seems i get a different presentation. And speaking of presentation, do you consciously use NLP, or is this a natural technique you have developed?
+JustinThought1980 Thanks. Yes, it does take a lot of effort and testing. NLP? I guess I use it naturally. I never heard of it. I had to Google it. I presume you mean Neuro-Linguistic Programming? I have no idea what that is. I need to read up on it.
I had the same problem. Make sure that file name extensions are visible first by checking the ‘View’ tab in file explorer before changing the extension name and maybe it’ll help
Thank you. Glad you appreciate it. Crazy that this video was posted YEARS ago, and I have still never seen ANYONE else write an article or make a video to explain the proper way to program an ebook.
hello, i used to convert pdf files to epub3. I heared about conversion of epub3 files to epub3 with radio speaker audio player. i would like to know d process of it , can u suggest the vedios or process to learn
@Corvette Stingray - Bummer. I'm sorry to hear that. You're absolutely right - I'm using an older WinZip for PC and there is a possibility that a newer WinZip on a Mac might not have the same capabilities. I use a Mac to edit all of these videos, but never for creating an ebook. So, I honestly don't know if a Mac version of winZip would have those problems, but it is a distinct possibility. Also remember that there are different versions of WinZip. If you are using the free version instead of the paid version, that might be why it is limited too.
I know this video is old, but supposedly epub3 supports JavaScript, I want to make an ebook that changes slightly every time someone opens it, driving people insane. replace he with they, for ex. (I am not a professional book writer, just screwing around)
I've never used JavaScript in an epub file, however, if the JavaScript triggers on a pageload, the book would be inconsistent as you change pages. If the JavaScript executes on the load of the epub itself, it would remain consistent during each file open. Since I've never done it, I don't know which functionality it would follow. Try it out. See what happens.
InkShard - a vlog from author Eric Muss-Barnes it may depend on device, but for me it is per page. I found that HTML5 canvas works inside it too.... JSNES? Super Mario.epub? But yeah, chrome with no URL bar now
To quote Philip Stanhope, "Whatever is worth doing at all, is worth doing well." Most writers are terrible. Therefore, it stands to reason they would not have any desire to learn the best ways to share their creations with the world. They are lazy. They cut corners. They want the easy way out. This lackadaisical attitude is reflected in their writing. Those with the desire to create works of elegance and efficiency do not view such efforts as "more trouble" at all. We embrace the opportunity to expand our knowledge and educate ourselves to the nuances of art and technology. We care deeply about the quality of what we bestow unto the world. Therefore, we endeavor to sculpt it, shape it, and craft it in the best way possible - right down to the format of the ebook. Not every writer has that kind of integrity, and it shows.
Never took a Myers Briggs test. Doesn't interest me at all. I've known people who were obsessive about discovering their letters and categorizing themselves. Not really my style.

You're welcome. Glad you found it useful. Yeah, basic HTML knowledge will greatly decrease the learning-curve, but it's not mandatory.
now i understand the structure behind epub :-) thanks a lot from Vienna / Austria!
Awesome video - originally published in 2014, almost 6yrs later and still valid!
Yes, Kindle still using .mobi format ;)

Not sure what to tell you. Sounds like some Mac settings are causing issues. Hope you sorted it out.
Absolutely fantastic! Thank you for the time and effort you put into this.
Very nicely explained! You helped me to save some private epub files from my iPhone to PC. Thanks a lot!
You are welcome. Glad it was useful to you.

Cool. I'm glad it was useful. Anyone with some HTML knowledge is going to follow these directions pretty easily. Good luck with your project!
I enjoyed that. How about an epub 3 version? By the way, W3 has an epubcheck program.
@27:20 how to compress the zip, then go to the XHTML seccion on W3Schools and you are done
@4:52 Good Morpheus quote but you look and sound more like Cypher
Hi Eric,
I have written a book that is very image intense, will this process work for an image intense book? Thank you

C'est très bien fait et extrêmement utile, merci beaucoup Eric.
It's very well done & extremely useful, thank you very much Eric.

I would never try to do all this editing work on a phone, but go for it if you think you can do it.
@@EricMussBarnes can an EPUB be created from word document on phone I asked not your preference for how I live my life
The part of changing the .zip to .epub just doesn't work for me, anyone know why?
Hm. That's odd. It's literally just changing the file-extension. Should work fine as long as your have extensions turned on.
I had the same problem. Make sure that file name extensions are visible first by checking the ‘View’ tab in file explorer before changing the extension name and maybe it’ll help

Very good video. Thanks a lot!
Good video, but are these procedures still valid ? I wonder that can I publish ebooks in 2016 with the help of this video?
The book cover sizes may need to be bigger for Amazon. But other than that, I don't think anything has changed.
