    Hey potters. I frequently get asked "How much water should I use when throwing?" by beginners. this isn't so much a question as it is people checking to see if they should use more of less water when they throw and especially center. So today we will be talking about how much water you should use hen you throw and in what situations you might find yourself using water in a different way. I hope you potters enjoy this potter lesson, good luck on your next project and i will see you potters next week :)

    I was thinking my wheel was getting a bit too messy... turns out I am definitely using too much water, especially in the centring stage. Thanks for the tip!

    I'm very much a baby potter and and this helped tremendously. I'm pretty sure I've cussed more in the past hour than I have my entire life, and that's a lot... Lol, but all because my clay was sticking to every damn thing and I now know it's because it was too freaking wet! I'm getting ready to go binge watch every video you've ever made just so I don't end up in the nuthouse from trying to teach myself pottery! 😂😂😂 Thank you for sharing! 🎉

    Watched your video, tried your suggestions and wow what a difference. Had to come right back to the computer to thank you. Moving from beginner to intermediate needs a new set of techniques and I definitely was not managing my water correctly. Thank. Keep up the great videos.

    I'm glad I found your channel. I threw pieces years ago, but only for about a year. Now I'm getting back in, setting up a new studio and it's fun to reacquaint myself. Nice work, and lots of great content on the channel.

    Thank you so much for making this video. You were already kind enough to respond to me on FB regarding this question but a picture/video is worth a thousand words. Great video as usual! Thanks Donte!

    Another very informative video. Even though I've been throwing for years I always learn something new from you.

    Curious why don’t you use the slip that comes off the clay body? When I throw I use my hands like you showed to start but as it makes the slip I catch the slip and cost the clay with it instead. The slip stays on longer and as I pull up I can collect it and just throw it back in the cylinder. Then I use that to coat the inside and use some to coat. The outside. Most of the time my catch pans are bone dry (some slip will fling off, but I use my finger to wipe it off and re use. Throwing dry is so much more helpful specially in larger pieces and harder shapes.

      That works too but I usually collect my slip and recycle it back into useable clay instead.
      Also half of the time I don't use enough water to create slip in the first place. Makes a mess.

    thats very helpful because knowing me i would make it so watery, id end up like a comic strip and all the clay going everywhere, up the walls and the ceiling 🤣🤣 thank you bro

    Should we be cleaning our hands off frequently? Maybe I'm oversaturating in some areas, but not in others, but I feel like I often have a lot of thick, sticky clay on my hands.

      Honestly, I do. For me it's about comfort. But yes. Almost every piece I clean my hands with the sponge real quick.

    Ok but how do I not use too much water to where it's mushy and not use too little when I pull so that there's no friction??

    I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. I follow your instructions the best I can but when I’m pulling the sides up it always cones out. I can’t seem to get the sides to just pull straight up. Is there something I’m doing wrong or do I just need to keep playing with it?

    • @EarthNationCeramics
      @EarthNationCeramics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you're talking about the cylinder coning out while you are pulling then yes you need more practice.
      However there should be no coning out while you are centering.

      @@EarthNationCeramics yes I am talking about the sides coning out on my cylinder when I’m pulling. I will keep practicing. Thank you!
