Good ideas for dinner. When the kids and I head into the Boundary Waters in northern Minnesota, we take the cheese out of its packaging and wrap it in cheesecloth that's been wetted with vinegar and wrung out. It keeps the cheese from getting oily.
Instead of Ramen, I use instant white rice. I measure out what I need into a ziplock bag. Pour my hot water in and let it sit to firm, then add pouch of tuna or salmon and I am good to go. Like Ramen but less sodium so I don't consume more water.
Good stuff, helpful for planning a trip I have coming up. Thanks for actually making these meals in the video, too, because the prep taught me something else... the edge of my titanium spoon makes a good cheese knife!
I have to admit that I've come around to the idea of blue-box Mac n Cheese on the trail; I'd fought it for years, but it's darned tasty after a long day's hike. The pot coozy trick was a good idea.
Nice and to the point. I like the idea of re-hydrating the jerky. A couple of things I use Babybels or Austrian smoked cheese they both add calories and favour. And make for lunch snacking too! You can also find dried cheese - it's a cheap parmesan replacement - this adds flavour as well. I cant eat gluten so I use quick cook polenta instead of the couscous. There are GF couscous available but I have yet to try them.
Where is the rest of your cosy, you do know it’s meant to fully insulate and not just the bottom? ( and it’s pronounced co-sy in the uk 🇬🇧 not coozy!) thanks for the meal suggestions, I’ve considered switching out the pasta from Mac n cheese for quick cook pasta and just keeping the cheese powder but adding real cheese 🧀 too is a great tip. Not sure low carb is really a thing for back packing. Most ultralighters are trying to cram every calorie they can into their food bags.

pieonthetrail No, the vinegar smell is very faint and hardly noticeable since it’s just on the outside edge of each slice.

Good idea about the Taco seasoning. Didn't think about that...and one pack could go a long way. Thanks!

Good food series. Thanks.
I would be interested in how often do you stop in trail towns and how do plan out your stops. Thanks.@@pieonthetrail
Great ideas, but I hate to wash pots. Maybe I just have not found a good system as a result I do freezer bag cooking. Take Care Pie
