Military Vehicles [Swiss/Switzerland]: MOWAG Piranha 3C APC/IFV (Die Schweizer Armee)

- The MOWAG Piranha is a family of armoured fighting vehicles designed by the Swiss MOWAG, which since April 2010 has changed name to General Dynamics European Land Systems - Mowag GmbH.
The MOWAG Piranha is available in 4x4, 6x6, 8x8, and 10x10 wheel versions. There are several variants within these versions, giving different degrees of armour protection and several kinds of turrets, for use in a variety of roles. Piranha derivatives have been assigned roles as troop transports, command vehicles, fire support vehicles, tank trainers, and police vehicles.
Four generations of vehicles have been produced, manufactured by MOWAG or under license by other companies, and variants are in service with military forces throughout the world. Piranha derivatives have been manufactured under license by General Dynamics (Canada), BAE Systems Land Systems (UK), Komatsu (Japan), Cardoen and FAMAE (Chile), and in the USA. The 8x8 US Army Stryker vehicle is derived from the Canadian LAV III which in turn is based on the Piranha, as is the LAV-25 family in service with the USMC. The Australian Defence Force also has its own modified version of the Piranha I 8x8 known as the ASLAV (Australian Light Armoured Vehicle). The ASLAV is operated by two cavalry regiments (the 2nd Cavalry Regiment and 2nd/14th Light Horse Regiment) and is used in the armoured reconnaissance and armoured personnel carrier roles. Some variants, like the United States Marine Corps's Light Armored Vehicle-25 (LAV-25) and its derivatives, are equipped with propellers for amphibious use, though their abilities are limited to sheltered waters.

I find it funny, that there are still people around who dont know, that Sweden is located in the high north of Europe (at the top approx 68 degrees north) and Switzerland in the middle of Europe at the north border of Italy and at the south border of germany
Got to love these guys. Mowag were the guys who in the seventies built light trucks for the Swiss postal service with a 5.8l yank engine and a variomat speedbox. As hard as one tried, not even Ferraris and Porsches could beat them at the readlights.... Brilliant.

LAV 25 was in service at 1983, the MOWAG has been in service since 1972 so no this isn't a copy of the lav 25, more like the other way around.
I am from Poland and I think that this might be more useful in my neighbourhood than in Swiss army.
Yep LAV25 is a derivative of this vehicle. Canada started using it early in the piece and US Marines started using them.

Partly true. Rubber wheel technology has developed so far lately that you can manufacture tires that are much more resistant to explosives and can withstand a lot of battle damage before giving way. It is of course would not be as strong as track system but it takes a lot more blast energy then one might think to cripple even one of the wheels.
Yes. The LAV-25 was based on the MOWAG Piranha I. GDLS also makes the LAV III armored vehicle that is based on MOWAG Piranha IIIH 8×8.

Das ist voll spannend wie die gebaut werden,wir haben mit der Klasse mal einen Ausflug dorthin gemacht es ist nur etwa 15 Minuten von meiner Schule entfernt.und einer von meiner Schule macht dort die Lehre .
It's a type of APC (Armoured Personnel Carrier) or IFV (Infantry Fighting Vehicle). The BTR is a type of APC/IFV.

No, It's a Piranha. Stryker is a derivative of Piranha built specifically for US Army's needs.

Gute Schweizer Technik, schade, dass wir keine schweren Panzer bauen, aber der Leopard II der Deutschen ist ja wohl sowieso schon der beste Panzer der Welt :-)

If they do give way, it's a matter of losing a wheel without loss of much operational capability (we are talking about at least 6-wheeled vehicles, some models even go as far as having a 10-wheel configuration), compared to damaging a piece of a track system which will ground the whole vehicle. Maintenance time of track system when not in operation to be combat-ready is also quite significant, certainly much more than wheeled system.

Also, with the level of infrastructure development of the modern world, "off-roading" is not in its truest sense any longer compared to say, during WWII. Not that wheeled system is in any way significantly deficient compared to the track system in this area, either. Thank's for your comment!

I would think so. If it needs to run on batteries, I could imagine every single one having a trailer the same size of one of these monsters just to have enough power and traveling distance. XD

It also proves you don't need a 700 billion budget to be prepared with advanced weaponry for your military.
Oh, not also that, but to have a voice, to be taken seriously, and to cause hesitation to invaders considering to make a move, one has to have power.

Looks impressive but with wheels rather than tracks it is heavier, less resistant to roadside explosives, and cannot venture off road.

120mm to kill flyes with a hammer? it's not a battle tank but a infantry personal transport, exist with a 20, 25, 30 and 90mm canon turet, but the most are fitted only with a 12.7 machine gun...

ist ein in Lizenz gebauter Steyr und die Kanone des M1 ist von Rheinmetall , der deutschsprachige Raum weiss eben wie man gutes Militärgerät baut ,das gilt auch für die Schweiz
