They didn't exist in the 70's , they were a late 80's early 90's band. Fantastic band if you ask me. The biggest act from Sweden since ABBA!

As 1990 as it might be, it was written and recorded in 1987 and released as a Christmas single back home in Sweden, before they had their international breakthrough... they only added some guitar lines and changed "and it's a hard Christmas day" to "and it's a hard winter's day" and voilà, it was reborn as a global smash hit.

"It Must Have Been Love" was first released in Sweden a few years before Pretty Woman hit the world, backthen the title was "I Must Have Been Love (Christmas For The Brokenhearted" Yep a christmassong that flopped, but with at little change in the lyrics and a moviehit Roxette was all over the world... Amazing song..

I was lucky enough to see both Bonnie Tyler and Roxette live at the same concert, in Zurich, Switzerland! :D
It was 1992, I'd just turned 18 and finished school, and Roxette were at the peak of their success, so they were headlining, while Bonnie Tyler was a little past hers by then and was the supporting act (which just goes to show how big Roxette were at the time). A few years earlier it would have been the other way round, but great to see 2 giants of the 80s/early 90s in one go anyway. There must have been about 30,000 there

I've been watching a few of your Roxette reactions today (hence why I subscribed!) and it's been interesting seeing this one, your first encounter with them, and knowing how you really grow to like them. It's great to see! I've been a fan since the late 80s, when it wasn't considered "cool" to like them, and nothing has ever shaken my love for them. To borrow from your commentary here, I guess they resonate my water in a good, good way! It's just such a shame that Marie passed so young, with so much left to give.

Roxette burst onto the US scene in 1989 when their debut single, "The Look" went to #1 for 1 week on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. Their follow-up, "Dressed For Success" (I have it on 45) only peaked at #14. Then they had a string of five consecutive top two smash hits - 1989's "Listen To Your Heart" (#1); "Dangerous" (#2); 1990's "It Must Have Been Love" (their biggest hit - #1 for 2 weeks off the "Pretty Woman" soundtrack); 1991's "Joyride" (#1) & "Fading Like A Flower (Every Time You Leave)" (#2).
After the last single listed, they only manage two more top 40 hits and their last charting song on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart was 1994's "Sleeping In My Car," which only manage to reach #50.
They were called the next "ABBA" as they would be one of two HUGE acts to dominate the US charts in the 80s & 90s - the other being Ace Of Base - They had the biggest single of 1994 - "The Sign," which spent 6 non-consecutive weeks at #1.

Marie Frederiksson had a duet with Frida Lyngstad of ABBA recorded in 1994. It's a great song and even though it's in Swedish. It's called "Alla mina bastå ar". Hope you can also check it out. 2 Great vocalists from 2 of the greatest bands of all time.

    • @marox79
      @marox79 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It wasn’t recorded in 1994, more like 1995-6. The record company basically f***ed up and released that the same week as ‘Ber båra en gang’ from I en tid som vår. Marie respected Frida so much she boycotted her own release in favor of the duet. As a result, only about 600 hundred copies of her single were released. Btw, Frida had offered the duet to Agneta first, but she declined and Marie came to the rescue.

The man singing backup throughout the song is Per (pear, like the fruit" Gessle ("Guess-luh"). He's their amazing songwriter and guitarist--I think rhythm guitar. He and Marie had solo projects, as well as Roxette albums. It's really an incredible legacy, some thirty years of music.
Marie died in December of 2019 at the age of 61, after a seventeen year battle with cancer. It took her entirely too soon. She is sorely missed.
I love what you said about our bodies being made up of 70% water, and music being frequencies, and how they harmonize with us. It was a really cool perspective, and got me to pondering.
I've loved Roxette since I was ten (1991). Per still puts out Roxette demos and things, and it's fascinating to hear the progression of a song from its first demo to its second or even third, and then what it became on an album, sometimes years later. One song was demoed in 1987, but not put on an album until 2011! It's fascinating.

They started in Sweden in 1986, then in the U.S. and worldwide in 1989 until probably the mid-90s. They kept recording and touring, but not in the U.S., sadly. Here, they practically dropped off the face of the Earth by 1995.
But, for me, they have been my all time favorite band ever, for 31 years.
This was in Pretty Woman, though recording in, uh ... late 80s sometime. Maybe 1987? I'm not sure.
"Sweet Dreams" was a group whose name I don't know how to spell. :)
