So, legendary Marvel, not a new game by any means, but how does it hold up? Well, its fine. I think its better for fans of Marvel obviously, but the bones of the game are solid enough and it has been widely imitated. Definitely worth giving a go to see if its for you.

Alien is still my favorite Legendary, but this one is pretty solid.
I know it's an old dog, but I got in my first play of it just recently and loved it. :)
the way i see it is that in ML you're not a specific hero but rather someone behind the scenes at or above SHIELD telling others what to do. Recruit is realistically Influence
100% with you on Aliens - think it applied these mechanics in a more interesting and engaging manner 👍
One of my first games when I entered the hobby. Still enjoy it but go for Alien more from this line of games.
I really like this game and is a shame I can't play it more often (my copy is in my home country still). One of the things I loved the most about it was playing the fan-made scenarios created on BGG, or participating on the Legendary Leagues.
I agree, it gets really difficult with more than 3players due to its own system. I played it a bunch solo and could see me playing it 2p also. I still need to try any expansion after fantastic four and any of the spin-offs.
Answering to your final question. I don't know if it is somewhere, but I remember Rahdo mentioning it and it made a lot of sense. In the setting, you are none of the heroes; you are a SHIELD operative giving them instructions on what is happening and what they need to do.
Oof, that somehow makes it worse. You're the radio operator, lol
@@3MBG ahahaha I don't think it makes it worse, since I always saw it more like being a Maria Hill equivelent. But that is a fair point. "Radio operator" X'D
I see it as you are playing as Phil Coulson. You are recruiting superheroes to fight the bad guys and are helping them by coordinating their attacks. I think it makes perfect sense. I've never understood why some folks get hung up on this or think that the theme is "lame" because you don't play as a singular superhero.
@@DarthEd77 Well, its not exactly spelled out in the game though. I certainly wouldn't use the word lame to describe it, more slightly jarring.
One of the best solo games. 2p/3p is still good but the right hero deck mix is needed.
really? im new to the genre and i want a good solo game. have any recommendations?
I always felt like this game didn't know whether it was cooperative or competitive and ended up a very confused design as a result. If it's cooperative, why is there so much emphasis on scoring individual points and why are there cards that sabotage the other players? It's like they made a game along the lines of Ascension, where you're trying to score the most points by defeating bad guys and rescuing civilians, and then decided to add in 'but of course everybody wins if you defeat the mastermind' at the last minute for theme reasons.
I seem to recall that the Legendary Encounters games are full coop?
Encounters are full co-op, yep. I didn't mention the scoring in my review of this one because we never play with it and treat it as a full co-op.
ML is realistically semi-coop
Great video! I definitely had the sense that I wouldn't be able to reason the purpose of multiple players and this sorta reaffirms that notion. I'm a big Marvel fan, but for whatever reason the look of Legendary never grabbed me. The only Legendary game I'm interested in is Aliens (your fault) so I'll probably stick to Marvel Champions for my Marvel fix.
I think aliens having the Act structure is the biggest single improvement over Marvel. The game ramps up, whereas with Marvel, sometimes you can get the hardest villains popping up early.
May i chime in with my personal opinion ? Big Marvel fan here (old Marvel, right now not so much) and i begun buying Marvel Legendary for that reason. While the game is fine, not bad by any means i was kinda disappointed and will probably sell it. The theme (especially in the core and first expansions) is soooo pasted on that it doesn't feel like it has anything to do with Marvel, it just has nice pictures from heroes and villains. Keep in mind that i adore deck building, but even still....it was ok. Also, the constant influx of expansions made me anxious as i wasn't able to keep up and that soured my experience even more. To summarize, good game but for me there is nothing "Legendary" about it.
Kia ora!
When you said "review copy used", did you mean Upper Deck still actively sending their 10 year old game for people to review? Why?
Yep, they reached out to send me some expansions and i was like "I haven't got the original" so they sent that instead. I like covering old games as well, I'm going to be reviewing Cosmic Encounter in a few weeks and that's 40 years old
@@3MBG Good to know! Always on the fence for this one, I might try it since I'm a huge Marvel fan. I have everything Marvel Champions and looking for more deckbuilding games.
@@wicaksonoadi1035 for me Marvel Legendary is the Marvel game to have. it's kinda addicting lol
This game scales really poorly with additional players, a flaw that they fixed with future legendary’s. Other players harm because they advance the villain's game without you being able to make your deck better, and the more players the worst effect is.
True, I would likely only ever play this one 2 player or 2 hand solo
we implemented a house rule that everyone gets a recruit turn before we start drawing from the villain deck. it makes a huge difference with 3-5 players
i'd say it really depends on the setup
All I want as a solo lover of LCGs is this game but…not marvel.
Cough avatar the last airbender cough
Oh I had this and champions mixed up I think too 😅 I want legendary firefly real bad
Lol, quite different games.
