I have a Smith & Wesson model 686 stainless steel revolver that I've had for a while and I love it and I have carried it in a holster (I live in Arizona) Right now I carry a S&W MP 2.0 in .40 S&W (concealed) and thankfully I've never had to use any of my weapons. Overall, it doesn't matter, whether you carry a .38 +P, or whatever else, when a bad guy sees you're armed, in most cases they'll think twice before starting any trouble with you. I knew a gal back in 1994 who carried a revolver, she was doing her Christmas shopping at Arrowhead Mall, those of you in the Phoenix area know the mall opened in late 1994, at the time the area was remote. She was walking to her car and noticed that she was being followed by a suspicious guy, it was around dusk. She told me she set her bags down, pulled her .357 revolver out of her purse, and when the guy saw the weapon, he turned and ran in the opposite direction.

I've seen a couple Model 60's that are over 65 years old and they look brand new, shiny as hell, not a scratch on them. That stainless steel is just so damn durable. Love that little gun.

I own a model 60 but with a 3" barrel. It's still easy to conceal carry and, with an extra 0.75" barrel, the ballistic performance of the .357s out of that barrel length will certainly beat the ballistic performance of any 9mm+p loads. Yes, the recoil out of my model 60 is considerable but, personally, it's easily manageable. Nevertheless, I seldom practice firing .357 rounds out of it because I don't see the need to defend myself with .357 rounds as I don't live in a state that gets snowy in late fall on to wintertime and early spring. I don't go hunting either. My $0.02.

good man. you will wear your barrel out. shoot 38s at the range. maybe 3 to 5 357 just to get the feel of the round, at the end.

Being confident in your carry piece is a big part of the equation. I carry vintage J frames ranging from 1962 to 1982. I’m confident with my choice and know it’s limitations and mine. I think the .357mag J frames are badass. I need one just for fun, & I know I’d carry it too. 😎
    Thanks for the video.

Just got a Model 60 last week and got to shoot it today on free range day at local gun store/range. It is a replacement/supplement for my Taurus 605 that went back for bad cylinder. It is awesome. Sure some top end full house .357 Magnum loads will hurt it is still manageable. The best part is the more time I have spent with my snubbies the better my shooting gets. You master a snub you can shoot anything. Even my 629's groups are shrinking. My Taurus 66 groups today are probably best I ever shot. 20 shots under 2 1/4" at 7 yards that included 2 fliers from the rest of the group. My snubs are my preferred carry gun. Unleash the Noisy Cricket and brown stains will happen!

Hey, I completely understand what you're saying. I'm just one of those cases where a j-frame .38 makes sense for primary concealed carry all the time. I'm 5' 9", 125-129lbs depending on the week. Got a small build and am low on the strength end. I couldn't possibly conceal most semi-autos or a larger revolver. I have a S&W 638 that I load with regular 38. I haven't messed around with +P yet. I feel adequately protected in my every day life. However, I'd like to look at getting a .357 for when I'm camping. I'd rather it be a 3 or 4 inch barrel to help manage the recoil, though. Love your channel and honest input. Thanks man

I own and carry several different 357's both iwb and owb. I've got 2 different S&W Model 60's. My wife keeps one in her nightstand loaded with 38spl +p loads. My model 60 3in and model 65 3in are probably my 2 favorite revolvers. I also believe in cartridge uniformity. Only thing that gets more carry time for me is my Gen 5 G19.

That is why I will never again buy any kind of .357 snub nose or even a medium frame revolver. .357 magnum should be fired through an L frame revolver or a GP100 with at least a 4 inch barrel. Snub nose revolvers are for .38 special.

I bought a new S&W model 637 airweight with a 2.5" barrel, and I sold it due to recoil and target reacquisition. Shooting it was unpleasant.

Good video man, I like it. I have some (not all) of the same philosophy on revolvers/semiautos. Smith revolvers have always been kind of a love affair for me. Even though I mostly carry my G19. Summer time goes to the j-frame in the front pocket.

I too have a Smith & Wesson 586-3 with a 4-in barrel. I bought it 32 years ago and it's a great gun but as you mentioned with yours you can't conceal that heavy thing. Though I have a permit to carry I rarely do but I decided that I should have something when I do want to carry so after all this time I now have ordered the Smith & Wesson model 60 two and a quarter inch barrel. This will be my first J frame I own but the smaller size will definitely be better for concealed carryment.

I don't care if the bad guy is wearing 5 thick winter jackets, I don't think it's stopping a .38 special. Winter jackets are not bulletproof armor. Most thick clothing will stop expansion, but it will still poke a .35 caliber hole in the bad guy. And I have a feeling that the bad guy won't tell difference between an expanded bullet and a non expanded one.

  • @billwiley7216
    @billwiley7216 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I like the model 60 personally. Small frame easy to conceal (First thing I did was switch out the grips for smaller rosewood grips for concealment ease) and as a true just for protection as a last available option 5 rounds will usually be more than enough. Too many people watching Hollywood movies think they are going to get into a 3, 15+ round magazine gunfire exchange in a personal fight or flight situation. I never feel under gunned when carrying my model 60.
If I feel I need more then I will opt to carry my trusty 1911, .45 which I have owned for about 40 years, if that will not do it I went to the wrong place to begin with!
One thing is whether you choose to load the weapon with full house .357 or plain Jane .38 or +p loads with the current state of ammunition availability in most places you do have multiple options as to caliber to be able to purchase a box or 3 of cartridges that will work in the weapon which that alone is a win.
I also recommend a revolver as a self defense weapon for a person not really use to handling a fire arm or someone looking for just a protection piece.
A revolver is easy to load and unload, does not possibly have a mechanical safety that may become a problem under pressure for someone newer to firearms in a tense critical situation and basically will never have a jam or failure to eject which again for a non gun person in a critical situation can only be considered a plus.
Also a revolver does not require disassembly to clean another plus for non gun savvy newbies. I do recommend that most newbies and smaller females to use .38 special ammunition as it will more than do the job in an emergency and at close range which is what this gun is best used for.
Just a simple to understand and operate tool all the way around. Follows the KISS motto, Keep It Simple Stupid!
And actually in today's political climate as much as I hate to even feel like I need to say it you can pretty much feel comfortable that a lowly revolver will not be in the cross hairs of those that want to erode our 2nd Amendment as the round count will be considered to be too low to be on their targeted bans of weapons they think we should not be able to own going forward into the future.
I do not have that same feeling about any pistols which boast a 10-15 round capacity as I do think those weapons will be targeted.
Regardless a revolver still makes a good defensive weapon and the model 60 is a nice easily concealable piece.

This is one of the few new models that I'm kind of interested in. I've got 5 older ones, my "newest" is a 642 no dash. No lock on it and traditional thumb piece on it and if it's hammer were exposed it would have the firing pin still on it. I think the frame mounted firing pin is more of a turn off than the lock, though they could've picked a better spot for it. Still, the new 60 is nice.

If you are concerned with 38 subby penetration go with a semi wad cutter in 158 grains. (FBI loads). Loads of penetration. For expansion use a good quality 110 grain jacketed hollow point bullet.

    Hi Dave,
The M60 is a fine gun, however I opted for the Ruger SP101 .357 instead because 1) the cylinder release pushes in not forward: 2) the gun is heavier so it manages 357 recoil better: 3) the grips are smaller making it easier to conceal inside the waistband or pocket: 4) the 2.25" bbl is slightly longer: 5) the hammer spring is coiled wire not a flat leaf spring which is I believe is vastly superior: 6) the Ruger is built like a little tank much stronger than the M60 similar to the GP100 being stronger (more metal & no side plate) than the 686 & 7) the Ruger is about $100 less.
But to each their own. Luckily we have lots if alternatives to choose from.
    Good luck with it.

Maybe a dumb question, but is it true that you should not shoot alot of .357 out of a j frame because the frame might crack? I think i would prefer a .357 model 60 over a model 686 L frame but the whole point of a revolver is reliability and i read about stainless steel j frames cracking when shooting lots of .357, which i intend to do for practice. The extra inch barrel goes a long way in effectiveness of the bullet. Most people will not be stuffing the model 60 into a pocket. What the lock does that bothers me, it's not the lock, it's that the swoop of the frame from top to back strap isn't as much as older models. Filling in the hole wouldn't help me. I also hate the frame mounted firing pins which also add to that diminished swoop of the frame. That's the hardest part for me to get over. I'm trying, but to no avail as of yet. However I have found a couple new models I like such as the 69 snub and the 686+ snub. Though with regards to the 686,id still rather wait until I found an older snub I could buy from the 80's. They are just a different gun than they used to be looks wise. I hate matte finishes, but I could polish stainless. They all come with rubber grips instead of the older magna style grips. Fortunately there are enough from back in the day that most can get their fill whether you like new, old or the 90's in-between period.
