Hirakud Dam :
It is the longest earthen dam in the world. Behind the dam extends a lake, Hirakud Reservoir, 55 km long. It is one of the first major multipurpose river valley projects started after India's independence. It is built across the Mahanadi River, about 15 kms from Sambalpur in the state of Odisha in India.
The main dam has an overall length of 4.8 km spaning between two hills; the Laxmidungri on the left and the Chandili Dunguri on the right. The dam is flanked by 21 km of earthen dykes
on both the left and right sides, closing the low saddles beyond the adjoining hills.
There are two observation towers on the dam one at each side. One is "Jawahar Minar" and the other one is "Gandhi Minar". Both the observation towers present extensive views of the lake and dam.
Jawahar Minar : (Entry fee ₹2/ per person)
Jawahar Minar provides scenic views of the dam. The Jawahar Minar Parks, Zero point and the large lake attracts visitors to come here during winter. Jawahar Minar Park is an awesome place for kids. The Minar gives picturesque views of the Hirakud Dam, the lake and the surrounding forests. Jawahar Minar and Zero point are best for a family picnic near Burla town. Hirakud Dam and two Minar is one of the most popular tourist places in Sambalpur, Odisha.
Gandhi Minar : (Entry fee ₹2/ per person)
The main attraction of Gandhi Minar is that its roof rotates up to 360A°, which provides a breathtaking view of surroundings. It locates The man-made dam elongates up to 4. 8 kms on the river of Mahanadi, whereas the height of this minar is approximately 35 feet, enough to give you chills while on top of it. It makes a perfect place, where one can spend quality time with family and friends.
Jawahar Udyan : (Entry fee ₹5)
It is a park below the dam. Both the destinations, maintained by the Water Resources department, attract tourists from across the country.
Hirakud Ropeway : (ticket ₹60)
The Hirakud Ropeway provides the best connect between Jawahar Udyan and Gandhi Minar.There are eight cabins to travel on the ropeway having the capacity to carry four passengers at a time. The ticket price is ₹60 /- for a two - way journey. Gandhi Minar, Hirakud in Sambalpur district of Odisha is a very popular tourist destination and the ropeway is an added advantage for the tourists to get a better view of the Hirakud dam.
