Marvelous! I heard this when it was broadcast from the Met during an intermission on a Saturday matinee. Quite an occasion to hear two former rivals together again.
Lotte Lehmann had initially refused the interview, not wanting to enter any conflictual arguments with Jeritza who could be extremely temperamental. Jeritza had also her very own way to flatter her own ego. This being said, she was the LAST true Golden Age diva and her recordings, albeit technically not flawless, don't render her full justice. Her voice was just amazing for Strauss roles, only matching that, to some extent, of Ursuleac in terms of power and vocal resilience.
Whew! At least the interviewer concedes that he talks too much! It's nice to hear, in bits and pieces, when the ladies manage to speak. Thank you, Pierre!
To hear Lehmann respond to thoughtful questions from a great interviewer- search for Studs Terkel archives, then search Lehmann. There are 2 or 3 . Very informative. This guy ruins it. I gave up. So frustrating.
The interviewer is REALLY annoying! He continually mispronounces Jeritza’s name. He sounds like a typical opera queen who thinks he knows everything but, in fact, knows nothing.
