      @@spaceman9459 Well, yes, he does exhibit lashing-out behaviors, which are typical of masculinity. It's, however, whenever he learns to shed that garbage, overcome his traumas, and allow himself to be intimate and vulnerable with others, that he becomes the best man he can be.
      Toxic masculinity is not the statement that masculinity is bad; it's that there exists some behaviors which are exhibited most particularly in men, and the behavior is usually born out of masculine pressures to react and respond in certain ways, so as to protect the ego. To take a concrete example: a group of heterosexual men sees two men kissing each other on a bench in the park; the group of men then proceed to assault and harass the two men. Wouldn't this be an example of toxic masculinity?

    Honestly, some Conan-style shit would be awesome to adapt The Black Swordsman arc and The Lost Children chapter. A series about The Golden Age could also be awesome. It needs to be done by a fan of the manga, and he would need to find budget to make fights and monsters seem good. The problem is, no one wants to provide money for something this violent, so even if it's done it would be censored.
    Though, I would love to see some goofy low-budget adaptation made by fans, made like an action movie from the 80's.

      They can’t seem to get Berserk’s anime perfect, they can’t seem to make live adaptations of manga/anime to work like anime. Might as well try something else then. Can’t say I’m happy that one of the best chances that this’ll work seems to be a “monster of the week” method, but it might work.

  • @tw4898
    @tw4898 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    One of the key reasons Berserk resonates so much with readers is because of the utter horror you experience from the brutality of the eclipse. You feel the rage, disgust and existential horror and it invests you in the story. I don’t think any studio would be willing to risk the money on an adaptation of that. I don’t even know if I’d want to see a good live action version of it. It would be so visceral and haunting if they pulled it off.

    I would have recommended adapting the Golden Age Arc and expanding on the material, like how the original anime did. Least amount of crazy monster VFX sequences, most amount of intense character drama and courtly intrigue. They could even get a couple seasons out of it and build their clout, to leverage for a bigger budget later.

  • @b4thewar540
    @b4thewar540 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I agree that in theory it would be interesting. However; as much as Berserk is about its characters, there would need to be a sense of character AND plot progression in a Black Swordsman show. Guts has too much history and motive to simply wander aimlessly at a consistently entertaining capacity. He may have spent 2 years doing just that, but the point of expressing that detail is to show how meaningless it ended up being. The reason films like the Dollar trilogy worked is because the protagonist is both mysterious and malleable, his backstory can be changed or not even mentioned cause he’s not technically the same character in every movie. His motives are defined by the situations presented to him, whereas Guts has very set goals even if they cause him to wander.

    I think a big problem would be, to translate the visual style to film.
    You're right, Berserk does often go for a realistic style but not always. Miura has a way of combining abstract art with realism and he also often exaggarates certain features to get a desired effect. I really do not know how one would adapt that without producing a cringefest.
    And Berserk is also a work of little words. Rather it's telling it's story through careful crafted scenes and facial expressions. That would also be a challange but managable with subtle acting and amazing cinamatography and music.

  • @MonkeyKingsformerroomate
    @MonkeyKingsformerroomate 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Before I watch, I can kinda tell you already it wouldn't. One reason alone. Guts sword. No matter what it won't work. If it were a prop, even a light one, would be too difficult to use for anyone. There's a reason swords never went over 8 pounds or so and were only made so long. They simply aren't useable after a certain length. Sephiroth would be fucked in a hallway for instance, (except he could cut through the hallway probably). Basically the sword would have to be a prop, and it woudl probably look like one. Even with the lightest materials, it would either look bad, or be really heavy. THere are some bigger swords, but they were used by executioners and the like. Had a purpose outside of combat. They shouldn't go for realistic but I'm talking in terms of making the sword fighting look good. Hard to do with a big unwieldly object. There are videos on channels like Skallagrim, and Shadversity that discuss Buster swords if you want more details.
    So the alternative is CGI, which almost never looks right. Even good CGI. No doubt all the parts where he swings it around would be CGI anyways, so it'd probably look off. Not saying it can't be done, or hasn't been done well before. They'd probably use a combination, prop for close ups, CGI for fighting. I think the show Arrow did things like that. Another alternative is to give Guts a smaller sword.........BWAHAHAHAHA No, not that.
    Storywise, I think you're pretty dead on.

    So if the series were to have, say, 14 episodes culminating in a two-part adaptation of the Lost Children arc, it would be really very nice to see the sky get progressively darker in establishing shots, as Guts gets more deeply mired in his lust for vengeance and his desire to run away from his own problems, until suddenly in The Lost Children, we get that iconic shot of Puck, on a background filled with clear, blue sky

    I'd like to Guilmello Del Toro try to adapt Berserk. If you've read Trollhunters a Scary book for "Kids"
    (Shows Troll Baby in human form get cleaved in half) A book he wrote witch feels awfully inspired
    by Berserk and other Fantasy Horror story's he's no doubt a big fan of it.

    Thats cool and all bu ... wait ... No no no your skipping patterns :
    First we get the amazing well received anime that kicks the series to the mainstream audience.
    Then we get the crappy money grabbing shameful Hollywood live action adaptation that abandoned the premise of the entire series.

  • @jemitysfilms

    The biggest issue would be the casting. Since all the characters, have such a distinct look to them. So having them be played by whoever or a big name actor with a distinct look of their own, could be absolutely disasterous.

    We start with the black swordsman arc within a one hour episode/pilot
    Then we go for golden age
    And then we have a one hour season finale in the back half of the black swordsman arc
    Season 2 conviction
    And season 3 so on and so forth
    Boat arc can be a mini season or film inbetween two seasons.

    Berserk would be great as a live action adaptation but...
    they gonna censor the hell outta it. Heck the 1997 anime had to cut out Wyald cos he was too dark and that was 1997 ANIME we're talking about. Obvs in your siggestion Wyald wouldnt show up but still, for modern audiences to consume in a film berserk would have to be censored extremely

    You made a point that Berserk has parallels to the Western genre. But how do you translate a guy chopping people in half with a two meter sword at the speed of lightning into believable live action? Would any studio spend enough money on it to create good looking set pieces with armies and monsters a la Lord of the Rings?

      the fights are not important, even if they reduced the sword and made the fights more realistic it would be good, the important thing is that they do not change the themes and the characters

      it doesnt need any extra pretext. you just show a dude with massive sword swinging it really fucking fast. it becomes believable action because you're seeing it right in front of your eyes. unless the actor is doing a bad job or the scene is poorly setup it would work

    I feel the biggest issue with live action is the art direction being to jarring for live action that it just shatters suspension of disbelief. Manga obviously has a very stylized are direction and that's vital for the medium however if we want the stories to make there way to live action we need to allow directors significant creative control with the visual presentation and I don't think manga fans will allow it.
    Prime example is the dragon slayer, it would 100% not work in live action and would need to be replaced with a zweihander or something comparable.

    For all that Game of Thrones fumbled in its later seasons, it was still a fantastic adaption of the novels. When there were actual novels to adapt, anyway.
    I think an HBO Live action of at least the Golden Age and a bit into Black Swordsman and conviction would be the absolute best case scenario. They have the budget to bring in the talent and effects, and if you had a team of dedicated writers and directors at the helm who REALLY care about Berserk, it would be great.
    Also, again looking at GoT as an example, HBO would definitely be able to get away with most of the. NSFW stuff, to put it mildly. There'd definitely be controversy, but as long as it wasn't sensationalized, and maybe more of the excessive sexual assault scenes toned down or removed, I think it could work.
    Iiiiiiits never gonna happen, of course, and realistically I'm seeing something more akin to the usual bad-cg theatrical films that just kind of. Cram the story into two hour chunks that make the Golden Age trilogy look like the encyclopedia.
