  • Originally owned by Sherman David Phelps, entrepreneur and one-time mayor of Binghamton, the Phelps Mansion Museum was constructed in 1871. Its location, Court Street, was once known as “Mansion Row” but today the museum is the only such structure left.
The mansion was designed by one of New York State’s most famous 19th century architects, Isaac G. Perry, who also designed the Binghamton Inebriate Asylum (1858) and helped complete the New York State Capitol Building (1899). The Second Empire Style home is decorated with Italian marble floors, black walnut staircases, and period lighting fixtures, all housed within its grand 14ft ceilings.
After 1905 the mansion was owned by the Monday Afternoon Club, a private women’s club whose focus was on education, philanthropy, and social causes of the day. The Monday Afternoon Club owned the house for over 100 years.
