    The BEST glazing instructional video I've seen. Everyone else seem to "cut" throughout, giving (a novice like me) the impression that critical steps and transitions are being missed when that's not necessarily the case. Thanks for removing my doubts and making a seamless presentation!

      Glad it helped you Rachel and I wish you much fun and the best results!! This method will work for 'simpler' projects such as the one I did or coloring larger areas. If you want to dive deeper into that like what to do when painting your own Mona Lisa there are a couple more steps to look into...especially more layering and such but if you are into oils have a look at my playlists, they are a bit more organized with many more realistic artworks.

    Dear sir, I am very much impressed with the way you taught us this old masters technique. Earlier I never knew the "value" of black and white layer but with your video, now I do. One question sir, ' As you painted the leaves, do we need to draw veins again and again with a darker green and leave the lighter areas untouched? Or do we need to put yellow, light green and dark green simultaneously? '

    • @MKLGRMFineArt
      @MKLGRMFineArt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Rajni and thanks so much for your lovely message :)
      There are different approaches that you can go. You can just to the shaddows in the underlayer and paint the details in with the colored paint afterwards. You can also paint the details in the very beginning with the black paint and glaze over it. There are different approaches to each technique and use the one you feel most secure with.
      This video was meant for those who feel confident in monochromatics - so just using black and white or brown and white or just one color and the white of the canvas - but curious to try full color. Using the entire pallette is hard in the beginning and this is a nice 'in between step' to feel a bit more confident.
      Nowadays there is no real need to make an underpainting as the masters did as our oil colors work different and they are way less pricy then way back in history. :)

      magda markides don’t be anxious :) I was afraid of oils for so many years and now I love it way way more than painting in acrylics :) it is not that difficult just make sure each layer is dry completely before you glaze over it :)
      Glazing also works for acrylics if you want to try that there first :)
      You can do it :)) sure if it!!! 🤗🤗

      MKL GRM Fine Art "make sure each layer is dry completely before you glaze over it :)'The very important info.from your video :)..Got it and keep it ! :) .I m afraid of oil too ,hahaha! ..I chose to experiment in acrylic and then switch to oil painting. It's difficult with mistakes in oil....so from now on I choose you as my teacher. I never had one.

      magda markides welcome to my channel then 😅😅 and of course feel free to ask anything. Honestly oils is easier than acrylics :) especially when it comes to blending and the working time along with the opacity of oils. I really really love painting with them AND nothing will stop you in making your underpainting in acrylics and make the final layers in oils :))

      Henry Bedingfeld hey Henry :)) first of all: congratulations :) glad that worked for you :) I plan to make another one on a portrait painting this summer going more into details. In the meantime I can recommend a channel called draw mix paint. Just type it in TH-cam and you find him. He is a very instructive channel but he does that very well and clearly structured :) he covers a lot of topics about oil colors and painting in general :)

    • @MKLGRMFineArt
      @MKLGRMFineArt  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Marina, glad you liked it and I honestly never expected so many people to see it. It was among the first ones that I uploaded and about 3 months ago it had 300 views or less...It was meant as a fun video as I received many questions about realism and that people are afraid of using colors (not only in oils) and this was a good was to tell a somewhat 'in between' solution to get a feeling for colors and still do not need to fear them.
      I also do 'regular' paintings with colors directly. I do have my videos split into playlists so if you like have a look at those. Recently much is acrylic pouring but if there is a topic you want to know more about just let me know. Will be happy to make a video about it :)

    • @MKLGRMFineArt
      @MKLGRMFineArt  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zoe Robinson yes it works really well :) it of course also works if you go right into color without an underpainting layer. Glazing just tints the color and/or increases depth :) let me know how it worked for you and show me the result in fb or insta 😘

    Is it possible to achieve similar glaze effect with linseed oil if I don’t get liquin( or however that is spelled 🙈) ?

    • @MKLGRMFineArt
      @MKLGRMFineArt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      yes you can also use the linseed oil, the only difference is the drying time. paint thinned with the oil will take a couple of days to dry and with the liquin it works pretty quickly :) - and I am impatient :)

    • @maritdw
      @maritdw 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Here are a few thoughts that might help someone.
      In oil painting, thinners or alkyds mediums like liquid should never exceed 30% of the mixture. Even 25% is a lot. Adding oil or oil and liquin is stronger, less prone to cracking and depending on the type of linseed oil, less prone to yellowing.
      To maintain the strength in a painting that’s more long lasting than a little exercise, the correct method for oil glazing through the centuries has always been to use transparent or semi-transparent paints in lieu of more thinners. Some good examples include Viridiana, permanent Alizarin Crimson, transparent yellow oxide, lake blue, transparent red oxide, and a semitransparent white, such as Cremnitz white (a lead pigmented paint) or another semitransparent white. This gives you more freedom to explore details in the under painting, as well as finesse color in the glazing.
      Glazing was also used in layers by the masters, to combine colors as they dried and were layered over each other, creating a greater visual depth than paint can do applied in a single application. The same layered approach is how skilled watercolorists often create better depth in their painting.
      When creating the under painting, using larger and smaller brushes, as well as thinner paint when needed, you can create more detail to achieve a more refined final look, if that is the style you are looking to achieve.
      It takes great patience to be an oil painter!

    Do you add more liquin for each layer or less? I am thinking of the the fat over lean rule. Very nice painting, got me really inspired

    • @MKLGRMFineArt
      @MKLGRMFineArt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      liquin kind of breaks the rule of fat over lean but it for sure depends on how thick your layers are. I paint pretty thinly - especially when it comes to portraits. on impasto I would make sure the upper layers are fatter. The liquin itself makes the paint film more stable and durable as well but no clue if that still would be risky to crack when used for thick paint layers. I never had issues so far but..again...thin layers...
