Layne is so damn special! He was a gift to mankind, and had to pay the price of a lifetime of misery,.so his voice could console us during ours. I sip my beer all the time for.you brother!
theDiReW0lf sams I grew up listening to AIC because of my dad and the radio at the time. But I just thought they were good nothing crazy special until maybe the last 6-7 years I’ve been heavily into AIC again and there’s nothing else like them and layne. Never will be either.
The 3 greatest singers of all time imo all came out in these few years. Layne, Maynard James Keenan, and Cornell (that’s how I’d rank them in terms of my favorite first or last) I wish I was able to see layne perform live but unfortunately I wasn’t born until 2001
@@baileymoyer9777 As a vocalist myself, I would agree with you, but I would replace Maynard with Chris Stapleton. Stapleton does stuff with his chords that are super-human. I’d offer up his small stage performance on TH-cam of “Sometimes I Cry” as his Exhibit A.
@@steelz78 yeah they’re both amazing singers I’m not educated enough on singing to be able to argue if one is better or not plus they sing completely different genres so that’s even harder to tell, but they are both absolutely incredible. I don’t think there ever will be a more talented era of singers than what the 90s were. My favorite thing is that AiC has one of the GOATs in Layne and then Jerry who is better than a large majority of singers and he’s an all time great song writer the 90s were such a stupidly talented time for music
What amazes me about these guys and their live performance is that Layne is pitch perfect almost every time. That is a hard thing to accomplish in a live rock show.
My hubs explained pitch perfect apparently, it is really hard especially since the guitars aren’t always tuned 100% but no matter Layne is pitch perfect. (He is NOT a fan either but has a respect for that).
Windows down, warm Florida breeze rolling in. Steadily making your way past the mangroves heading in towards the evrerlasting twighight glow of the Miami shore. Picture it? That's the first time I heard this song and I will never forget that image. Nothing but smiles:)
I'm drinking a bottle of beer whilst listening to this song. Just put it in front of me. I'm listening on my head phones, and when the chorus started I caught myself glancing at the bottle quickly checking if it is still there and didn't brake / smash .... such a powerful voice, amazing.
Its the style of belting it out is what makes him perfect. 90% singers bang it out instantly when they hold the note Uno but his voice is kinda like(I'll put like 10 being Max volume of his voice and 1 being gentle) when she calls my name line 56679999997666 I think it's gonna rain line 44455799.10.9877 when I die line is just straight 78999987 if u listen to it there's no distortion from the mic and the volume goes up slightly even tho hee fucking hooning it out just shows how well he controlled the distance between the mic and his exhaust pipe 😂another thing only true performes these days know since they relie on the sound engineers to digitally do when Layne was his own sound engineer to an exstent plus he was in the last era of analogue which always sounds better than digital
God how I wish I could have seen the original AiC live, with Layne and Mike Starr. I probably would have been like a 13 yr old girl at a Justin Beaver concert, crying and shit when Layne goes into a chorus. His vocals are so got damn powerful..
Oh me too for sure! I’ll always regret not having the chance to see them live or enjoy them during their prime. I didn’t discover them till I was 10 or 11, in 1995-96, when they were starting to wind things down unfortunately 😢. I was 17 when he died and his death hit me like Elvis’ death hit my parents generation.
Man it does, dude was an absolute beast in every way, yet was unrecognizable shell of himself towards the end, it’s not sad, it’s absolutely fucking tragic.
Too many great vocalists, guitarrists, bassists, drummers.... brilliant musicians left us too soon because of the damn drugs!!! May they all rest in peace... or rock in heaven!!!
Probably is the greatest there ever was. I can see him covering any rock song but can't hardly anyone make his songs sound good as he did. 😭 Rip Layne Staley
I can't believe I'm hearing this right now...I'm back at Lollapallooza with the water bottles and the suits/tuxedos (can't remember). Thank you so much for this my friend. My God, I am feeling alive now...
I had this bootleg at Vintage Vinyl import section back in 93, I love the little subtle differences between the live and CD version. It broke my heart the day it came up missing, damn I'm loving this right now
we all will miss Layne! and he can't be duplicated. but William duvall has paid his dues. i saw him perform in Portland Oregon in April of 2001 at a small club in with jerry Cantrell, and they did all the great songs from AIC. the new album is very good and it grows on me! don't be surprised to see them finally win a Grammy!
Let’s see Freddie, Robert or Cornell sing this song like this song was intended to be sung with CRAZY PURE POWER, RANGE AND BLOOD CURDLING ANGST.......ONLY........LAYNE has the ability to sing this like the angry ARCHANGEL (Credit: Tom Morello *”angry angel”) he sounds like here as if he descended upon the stage from the heavens above. In addition, Layne's studio to live vocal replication is unparalleled.
I absolutely agree... i'm listening to AIC songs and Nirvana songs in memorie of their singers death. Both in 5 April. And it's great to read many good coments of Layne and Kurt like this. RIP untouchable Layne!
I agree this on the top of Layne's best vocal ensembles, but I think nutshell is his best vocal performances. However this is my favorite AIC songs along with Down in a hole.
laynes vocals went do to drug addiction and smoking. when layne was healthy back in the early 90's he was amazing in a live show 1991 the toured that whole year. he had a great set of lungs for singing as well as vocal cords to match!
@wpditerl so well said! Laynaholics 4-ever! thanks semifixtion for posting this.....this one is my fav and is on my mp3! luv the live better than studio! join the layne staley petition to help get him honored by 2012!
@beAVENeasy Yea, I totally agree with you there. Towards the end, he sounded different but he still had an awesome voice. I kind of like the change, it gave us something pleasantly different.
pay2cme: Another thing they have in common: Almost every new band these days trying to imitate the old school stuff AND bringing in their own influence DO SUCK...
this and dirt are some of aic best songs too bad they so underrated theres only like a few live versions of rain when i die on you tube anybody know where can i find more?
The way he sings the chorus always gives me goosebumps. By far one of the greatest there ever was.
Clean A4s :)
Fuck Yeah!
same dude... the way he belts out the chorus makes the hairs on my arms stand on end
Absolutely.
Ivan Daniel that's him bro
He sings clean, he sings dirty, he screams, he growls, he sings high, he sings low... Is there anything he couldn't do?
Layne stayley and Chris cornell are my two favourite singers for a reason
Me too. Both phenomenal singers in a league of their own. Love them both. ❤
Quit heroin, unfortunately.. It's such a shame , he was so great
@@IronCity74 😞😞🥺🥺
Stay sober :(
Layne and Cornell are the vocal gods of the 90's 'grunge' era.
Layne is so damn special! He was a gift to mankind, and had to pay the price of a lifetime of misery,.so his voice could console us during ours. I sip my beer all the time for.you brother!
Holy cow, his voice was actually better live than in studio. Him and the band. They nailed it!
There's that extra power in Layne's vocals here that I don't hear on the album.
I watched so many interviews they all say he was better live than in studio!
Exhibit A: for why Layne Staley is the greatest rock singer who ever lived.
It's insane how good he was. I realized it more and more later in life. Totally unique and one of the all time greats.

"RAIN WHEN I DIE!"
"...Okay..."
Al Amin Miah It sounds more like Rain When I Die to me, but I get the hint of "Play The Next Song". It sounds like both to me.
+Al Amin Miah he says rain when I die, but I can see where you're coming from for "play the next song"
Yeah, definitely "Rain When I Die". I couldn't quite tell until I got a better set of ear buds.
What amazes me about these guys and their live performance is that Layne is pitch perfect almost every time. That is a hard thing to accomplish in a live rock show.
he was un-f**kin believable
My hubs explained pitch perfect apparently, it is really hard especially since the guitars aren’t always tuned 100% but no matter Layne is pitch perfect. (He is NOT a fan either but has a respect for that).
That chorus gave me chills. Such a powerful voice.
Mikeshredder the way he belts out the chorus makes the hairs on my arms stand on end! 👌🏼
Mikeshredder something else he is layne
Layne could sing like no other... man, we miss you
him and Cornell! different but both amazing ( I like Andrew Wood also tho a smooth voice)
I gotta confess, this might be Layne at one of his best.

Duvall and Cantrell can't evoke half the emotion layne can together on dat chorus. His fucking voice just flies out of the room.
Layne's voice always gives me chills all over. Nobody could sing like him.
And no one still can that I know of
I know. Greatest rock singer of the 90's IMO. Right up there with Freddie Mercury all time.
His vibrato and his power. Hard to match. You can hear him squeezing his lungs bare

Layne was and still is untouchable. Sucks the drugs got him.

Too many great vocalists, guitarrists, bassists, drummers.... brilliant musicians left us too soon because of the damn drugs!!! May they all rest in peace... or rock in heaven!!!
Ironically, the drugs were also a huge inspiration for their music.
I know.... and that's the sad thing on it... :( Still damn drugs...
I rather have coffee and cigarettes :P
Pokerface1337 Coffee has inspired Mike Patton though.
Beautiful voice!! Layne is so awesome! Miss him, but we can still hear his voice.
Wow, this guy sings with conviction
the way he belts out the chorus makes the hairs on my arms stand on end 👌🏼 I fucking LOVE his voice!! they are my #1 all-time favorite band!
Audience : RAIN WHEN I DIE!
Layne : Ok *statrtin to a fuckin the best live voice performance ever*
Absolutely my favorite of Alice...
The chorus burns itself into your Head.
OMG vocals!
John Arvanitis the way he belts out the chorus makes the hairs on my arms stand on end!
Word is that it did rain in Seatle the day Layne passed. The vocal god!! The last talent of the rock era!!
Probably is the greatest there ever was. I can see him covering any rock song but can't hardly anyone make his songs sound good as he did. 😭 Rip Layne Staley
I've said the same thing so many times.
No doubt Layne is one of the best rock singers of all time.
One of the best SINGERS of all time. If he'd made a soul album, damn it would've kicked ass.
How on earth was he able to sing like this?Music died a little bit after he left us. Layne, I wish you were still around. Rest in peace.
Absolutely the best song I think, means so much and deep and dark and actually has saved me many times
Agreed, such an epic song all around

Suits. Tom Morello talks about Layne at that Lollapallooza, mentions the suits and that Layne sang like an angry angel.
this bootleg is fucking incredible. Best performance of Rain when i die right here.
I owe to no one like AIC, Layne S. and J. Cantrell for my youth being that good.
Such an incredibly powerful voice
Definately the best live version of this song ever
Okay, wow! I have watched/listened to so many of his live performances, … wow! This is pretty fantastic.
I wish there were more videos of Layne singing this

Layne Staley and Mike Starr RIP brothers, you 2 MADE AIC!!!!!
Jerry? Dude I get it but come on. Don't come at me for commenting on a 13 years old comment lol
Someone from the crowd-Raiiinn when I diieee.
Layne-OK.
