    Can't wait to watch this. Sting was my favourite Wrestler as a kid. His transition to the Wolfpac in 98 was somewhat of a dream - seeing this character morph into a somewhat Hip Hop version was still one of the coolest things I've seen. And to be quite frank, when he took his break after Bret put him out, WCW lost its power significantly.

    Sting 's 98 is a great example of how to take a really hot character and lose most of his heat. You could just tell they didn't know what to do with him after he beat Hogan so they just stuck him in the nWo. The fans were for it at the time but it was an awful move as it made no sense and was an completely odd fit. Him joining that group only helped prop Nash up as leader of that faction. And as part o that group he got away from everything that made him the hottest talent in wrestling in 97. DDP was smart enough to separate himself from that group and not join because it made no sense in regards to his character. Sting was no longer a vigilante/superhero but now something more akin to a team mascot. This helped Goldberg surpass him in WCW as the next kind of mystical being. With Sting and Goldberg WCW could have had their own version of Austin V Rock but they constantly got in their own way.

      Yes. You're right.

    • @MR.__G
      @MR.__G ปีที่แล้ว

      They built sting up for about 18 months, only for him to win in a controversial ending, having the title vacated on nitro, waited for a rematch 2 months later, give sting another no clean finish, then have him drop the belt to savage 2 months later only for it to end up back in hogans hands the following night. All of that for a 2 month title run. Sting was the second hottest babyface to Austin in 98. He should’ve got the same push austin did. Talk about dropping the ball

    • @blueblur2273
      @blueblur2273 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MR.__G I don't think Sting having the title really mattered. For most of the Attitude Era Austin was chasing the belt than holding it. I think what mattered was where they were going with the story and what I do agree with you about is that the main story should have pivoted to Sting after Starrcade 97.

    • @MR.__G
      @MR.__G ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@blueblur2273 yes that’s what i actually meant. Because austin would drop the belt but he was still chasing it & was in the main storyline. Sting should’ve had that same opportunity. Being 2nd to Austin during that time while not even speaking, speaks volumes to how over he was with the crowd. They dropped the ball

    • @blueblur2273
      @blueblur2273 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MR.__G And they did the same thing when it came to Goldberg. He caught fire in 98 and instead of revolving the story around him in 99 they pushed him to the side and kept the main story around Hogan Nash and Flair. It was fine for Goldberg not to have a story line in 98 because he had the streak. But once they took that away he had nothing and it completely killed his momentum much like Sting the year before.
      WCW had stars in Goldberg and Sting who at different points matched the level of popularity of Austin and Rock. However Sting and Goldberg were able to only sustain those levels for 1 year periods because they were sabotaged by their peers.

    They didn't do a very good job discussing the match order at Uncensored '98. Hogan-Savage was a cage match (which neither even mentions once here), so it was going last for logistical reasons. But the finish also involved Sting getting involved and attacked by Savage to set up the next PPV main event. Conrad would have at least pointed that out I think.

I do agree with Eric and Paul, that even though the finish to Sting/Hogan at Starrcade sucked, the feud between the two was still hot, going into SuperBrawl. The idea of a real draft is absolutely awesome. They could also do what soccer does, with players going to different teams, different leagues and countries all over the world. The clubs negotiate a transfer fee and the players negotiate their wages with the clubs, and sometimes there are loans for six months, a year, two years...so certain players can have more game time and come back better than before. I'd love to see that in wrestling. If someone isn't really getting over in WWE or AEWmaybe they could go on loan to Impact, ROH, NWA or MLW and if someone in the smaller promotions is doing really well, they should be able to go to the big companies and the smaller ones would be compensated with a transfer fee.

    Sting Crow Gimmick: When the build-up, anticipation, and overall journey along the way is that good, it's going to make it very hard for the destination to be as impactful. Hard to think of any way that they could have paid that off with the same results as the build-up, given how good it was.

    • @drewspods
      @drewspods 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just have him beat Hogan cleanly. Then the NWO try to take him out month after month. Finally leading up to a rematch with him & Hogan @ Bash At The Beach.
      Then you have multiple avenues to go down... Maybe Bret stops Hogan from cheating to win at the Bash. Then you got Hogan vs Bret for the rest of the year culminating at Starrcade. Let's say Bret beats Hogan. The NWO comes out and Hogan's like wtf, why didn't you help me. They've lost faith in him after losing to Sting & Bret. They turn on him.
      That sets up Hulkamania vs NWO for 1999 (to give closure to the NWO - finally have it wiped out by the guy who created it).
      Meanwhile Sting has title matches with talents Hogan would never give a shot. Benoit, Booker T, DDP, etc. Maybe some of his friends want a shot. Giant, Luger, etc.
      I think they should've reallyyyy held off on Goldberg winning the title. Let Goldberg win the World War 3 battle royal and beat Sting at Starrcade for the belt (with his streak still in tact).
      That sets up Goldberg's fresh title reign, a rematch with Sting obviously, & an eventual obvious match with Bret as you'd have to consider him Goldbergs #1 contender.
      All that and you'd still have a money match with Bret vs Sting left.

    Ideally it would have been great if Sting had transitioned to his "back in black" persona earlier rather than doing the Wolfpak gimmick because that was the best way to bridge Surfer Sting with Crow Sting. The "back in black" persona always stuck me as being ok it's the guy who was surfer Sting still WCW, still the hero but he's not taking anyone's shit and if you betray him, you've fucked up. Even that slight variation he had in his make-up design indicated a different character from what I call the "voice of silence" persona.

    @20:37 Bischoff’s pitch about the WWE and AEW cooperating and having genuine competition between Wrestlers is exactly how WCW and WWE should have done things. Like imagine if Scott Hall and Kevin Nash had actually come into WCW for a “war” for a storyline involving both WWE and WCW that both have agreed to to swap talent and create the illusion of invasions and competition and having tournaments to decide who’s the Title Champion of the two and swap the belt and talent back a forth. Unfortunately Vince McMahon has a conqueror’s mentality. He created a stagnant industry buying up ALL is his competitors. It’s insane he did that, because without competition there’s no reason to innovate. Once you have the monopoly on an industry, your customers don’t have other options there is no better product or the threat of losing your customers so why would you ever take risks? He was single handily the best thing and simultaneously one of the worst things to ever happen to Professional Wrestling.

      An example: Randy Orton recieves a 3 year $9m deal under WWE but then he gets a 1 year optional year that he can be traded to AEW for the same yearly salary but still under the WWE contract while AEW sends 2 or 3 (face it Orton is leagues above most are talent) that are either in their optional year or within a year of it. Now at the end of Orton's contract WWE gets first option to make him a new deal or Orton would have to wait the 90 days to sign with AEW. Everybody stays under the home company's contract because then nobody is going to know who got signed the most fans and uncle dave would know is who is in their optional year and who's in the "free agency" period.

    Paul is terrible. His questions are bad and his sentences don’t make sense

    So Eric knew sting was in no condition to work and he let him? I wonder how many wrestler lives could have been saved/extended had Eric put his foot down and started a wellness program or something for the wrestlers😐 as much as we like to 💩on WWE, they do have a program now. I want to like Eric but the more I listen the more i realize that he was a terrible boss who played favorites. Not cool

      Easy there mr 20/20, everybody has favorites regardless of what they say. It’s human nature. How unfortunate to not have you and your wonderful hindsight as WCW President back in the day..

    I have to say & I think I speak for most of wrestling fans that listen to this show? I can’t believe that u guys & especially Bischoff would not take the f….ckin time to do a tribute for Scott Hall? WTF 👎 No disrespect to Sting but he would probably agree!! Do we really need to hear about Sting 98 this week after losing the main guy that helped bring us Sting 98…..? Again WTF? I don’t care that these researchers researched Dave Meltzer for 2 weeks for this episode…I don’t care!! In my opinion, y’all have both disrespected the legacy of Scott Hall!! Not sure I will following or listening anymore 🖕

      @@miltonbowens6561 Don’t u think I realize that? So why have they not done another show in tribute to a true legend instead of partying on spring break with a drug addict that can’t cut a promo to save his life that looks like a drug addict and was about as exciting in TNA as his wanna be Hogan Heel turn was compared to my messages on here are to u apparently? Well mine gets heat actually….His was a yawn….And I’m referring to the charismatic enigma, who has no charisma at all unless his coming to the ring

      @@shilledoutbyfers2445 apparently you don’t know that, otherwise you wouldn’t have gone off. Scott Hall and Bischoff were great friends.

      @@tylerc857 I know they were good friends. That’s why I’m soo disgusted with Bischoff & Conrad for not doing a tribute for a guy that changed the industry, helped Hogan become the top guy again & as a result Bischoff can sit around and brag about all his accomplishments on this 83 weeks podcast !! Thanx to the Bad Guy!! Meanwhile, their on spring break kissing a circus performer ass who can’t cut a promo & couldn’t hold the Bad Guys jock strap!! But they think he is soo charismatic….He did help to finish off Bischoffs wrestling career because he is not Hogan!! And I’m referring to the Charismatic Enigma who is not Charismatic at all
