    This was so lovely! I absolutely do not need a bonnet, but MUST make one asap - thank you for the inspiration!

      Haha! Everyone needs a bonnet 😉 Thank you, Morgan!

    I suggest fusing two layers of buckram together by wetting it then ironing it together with a pressing cloth. Then cut out your pattern. The resulting bonnet will be sturdier and have a longer life. Thank you for posting this! It was nice to see how other make bonnets. Keep making bonnets!

      emilymermaid Thanks for this! This works well for costume bonnets/bonnets for theatre, but the weight of extant bonnets is better replicated with a single layer 🙂

    This is exactly the type of bonnet tutorial I was looking for! Thank you so much 😊

    Thanks for this Serena, I bought my first bonnet (straw) from you years ago and I just bought a pattern from the lovely Timely Tresses and it's been really useful to see you put it together.

    It's lovely - I like your colour choices. I also find a curved needle helpful when whipping the brim to the crown although I have yet to find one that is fine enough for silks!

      I bought surgical needles off ebay, really fine!

      Faith Caton I got my hands on some about a decade ago, but haven’t been able to find any since. They are very precious to me now!!

    I’m looking for inspiration to start a business with bonnets, embroidered ribbons, corsets, etc, and everything will be historically accurate! This video was perfect to give me inspiration, thank you!

    Congratulations! This bonnet is very very pretty and I loved techniques involved in its construction. In Peru the name for buckram is "yute". I've just realized it by means of your tutorial.

    A bit fancy for what I am looking for but still love it and with more poor person in mind for wet plate photography, reckon I would have cracked it.

    This is exactly what I was looking for! I think buckram in Argentina is "arpillera" and I never would've thought to use it as the base, you're brilliant!

    The bonnet is so beautiful! O_O= And the video was so detailed and all the steps well explained and shown - very helpful if you're trying this out for the first time!

      Polka Dot Sadly I only decided to start filming things when the dress was nearly finished! I’m making a beaded 1890s ball gown which is getting filmed though 🙂

    This is a lovely video. I now have a hankering for such a bonnet, not that it would go with anything else I wear 😂 I was just wondering if cotton or linen or possibly cotton velvet would be historically appropriate for the outer fabric? I personally avoid silk for ethical reasons.

    Thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial! I am new to recreation and I definitely need a bonnet! I'll have to try this right away! I have a lovely light green raw silk, do you think that could be used as an accurate outer fabric? Thanks again for the tutorial!

    Great tutorial!!! I've put off making more buckram forms because my first try was pretty discouraging, but this shows me why I got things so wrong, which is exciting me! WHERE did you get that oh so nice and drapey ribbon?! It's amazing! Glad to see you posting how-to's. :D

    • @SerenaDyer
      @SerenaDyer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you! The ribbon was from Timely Tresses, I believe, but it’s been in my stash a long time!

    Love it, and that buttery yellow is such a beautiful choice! I'm going to try decorating my first bonnet ever (eek!), mine's straw, so at least I don't need to worry about hecking up the form, haha. I have a question: what sort of updo are you sporting when you wear the finished bonnet? Is it just a simple bun in the back, and do you need a hat-pin to keep it in place, or are the ribbon ties and general shape enough to keep it all in place atop your head? Thanks!

    Thank you. A very useful video and great to see more bonnet videos. The bonnet is lovely. Are there any books you recommend for hat patterns? I’m not ready to make a 1860s bonnet but you’ve inspired me to go back a fix one of my other buckram bonnets :)

    • @SerenaDyer
      @SerenaDyer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lizzie Dawson I’m glad you enjoyed it! I’m not sure that there are any pattern boos specifically for bonnets, actually (gap in the market?!) but if you’re after something specific Timely Tresses do fab patterns for most C19th decades.

    What were you calling the back part of the hat--the "beverly"? "Baverlea?"

    Is the any reason for using crin specifically or just as that’s the accurate millinery binding material. Could other bias tape be used? I’d love to see some other hat tutorials

    • @SerenaDyer
      @SerenaDyer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      lynda fletcher Crin is just better at creating a really smooth edge. A bias cotton, for example, wouldn’t have the same effect. I have some more bonnet videos in the works!

    Hello I'm renewing my vows and we have a victorian theme, I am wearing a victorian lace wedding dress. This is to celebrate our 30th anniversary and my 50th birthday. Is there any chance you still have the template that you used in this video that you would be able to upload please

      I would suggest buying a pattern from Timely Tresses. And remember all head sizes are different!
