- Flower farmer and florist Georgie Newbery shows you the mass of varieties of flowers and foliage she has to cut on the farm in June and makes a great big hand-tie with them as she talks. This British Flowers week it’s time to celebrate the locally grown flowers industry which is growing exponentially not just in the uk but ALL over the world.
Georgie has an interesting point of view: because she is both grower and florist she has an understanding of what and why you'd grow or buy if you were at either end of the market. As she takes you through the long list of material she has to cut this month, she also considers why each stem is useful to her as a florist, but why it may not be such a good stem to grow if you were looking to sell to other florists. Equally, she considers what might be worth growing if you are a florist with a garden and able to grow a little for your design work, rather than buy from other growers.

Would love to take the 30 stems challenge except that we are under a heat advisory at 105 F in Central Texas. I'm watering just to keep the soil temperature down. There are at least 30 stems of bachelor buttons, assorted foliage, stunted sweet Williams, some zinnias making a tentative appearance, and 2 fancy salmon echinacia. The roses are pouting and shattering as soon as they open. We're hoping this heat doesn't last all summer, but I remember 2011 with 90 days of triple-digit heat, and trees died. People died too.

I'm a new gardener so I wouldn't have anything left if I took 30 stems out of my garden. However, I'm tempted to run up and down my street under the cover of darkness and pinch them from my neighbours! That bouquet of yours just kept getting better and better.

Wow, I'm starting on 200m2, and I just want to grow everything you mention. Only 100m2 are planted beds (seedlings) right now, with the other half to be made into beds and walkways, and I am already out of space, looking for where else I can do another 200m2.
I'm considering sectioning off 200m2 in a cow's paddock as a meadow plot, but then they'll all bloom at once -- no successions!
Slow down and make a careful succession for next season x

Another question from me. What is your opinion on growing Itoh peonies verses regular deciduous peonies? Also, I don't do instagram, don't have a page, but I do love watching youtube.
I'm not a great peony expert and only have about forty only put in over the past couple of years - slowly coming together and I am loving them x
@@theflowerfarmer I have no regular peonies, but planted 8 Itoh peonies two years ago and am getting flowers for the first time - BUT - since I have no reguluar peonies, I can't compare.

I have tried so many times to grow sanguisorba but rather unsuccessfully- I usually end up losing it after a couple of years. I have a white one, Sanguisorba canadensis, that grows fabulously every year but the Sanguisorba Obtusa is a failure, sadly :-( Any tips please? Thank you
