مدينة باكو القديمة ،بنيت على موقع مأهول بالسكان منذ العصر الحجري القديم، تكشف مدينة باكو المسورة عن وجود الزرادشتية والساسانية والعربية والفارسية والشيرفانية والعثمانية والروسية في الاستمرارية الثقافية. حافظت المدينة الداخلية (إيشيري شيهير) على الكثير من أسوارها الدفاعية التي تعود إلى القرن الثاني عشر.
تعد المدينة القديمة، قلب باكو في العصور الوسطى، أحد مواقع التراث العالمي لليونسكو، وتحيط بها أسوار القرن الثاني عشر وتزخر بالهندسة المعمارية والتاريخ الشرقي. داخل الجدران الجوية، ستجد متاهة من الأزقة الضيقة موطنًا لبضعة آلاف من السكان بالإضافة إلى المتاحف والآثار والمعارض الفنية وجميع أنواع المطاعم وغير ذلك الكثير. المكان يشبه متحفًا حيًا في الهواء الطلق!
من بين المعالم السياحية التي لا ينبغي تفويتها برج العذراء، الذي يكتنفه الغموض والأسطورة - لا يزال تاريخ بنائه والغرض الأصلي منه غير معروفين تمامًا حتى اليوم، على الرغم من وجود العديد من الأفكار! وفي مكان آخر، يقع قصر شيرفانشاه الذي يعود تاريخه إلى القرن الخامس عشر وهو المقر السابق لسلالة شيرفانشاه التي حكمت في فترة العصور الوسطى. إنه مجمع معماري مذهل يضم إلى جانب القصر نفسه مسجدًا وضريحًا وحمامًا وديوانخانا وبوابات وخزانًا.
إلى جانب هذين الموقعين الأكثر شهرة، هناك الكثير من الجواهر الخفية التي يمكنك اكتشافها، بدءًا من متحف الكتب المصغرة، الذي تتضمن مجموعته أصغر كتاب في العالم بقياس 2x2 ملم فقط، إلى مسرح ماريونيت، الذي يقدم عروضاً لاثنين من روائع عزير حاجبيلي: ليلي و المجنون وبائع القماش. هناك أيضًا ثروة من المساجد التاريخية (لا تفوت مسجد محمد!) والخانات والحمامات التي يمكنك استكشافها، والتي تقع جنبًا إلى جنب مع المعارض الفنية الصغيرة المستقلة والمطاعم والبارات والمقاهي على الأسطح.
Built on a site inhabited since the Palaeolithic period, the Walled City of Baku reveals evidence of Zoroastrian, Sasanian, Arabic, Persian, Shirvani, Ottoman, and Russian presence in cultural continuity. The Inner City (Icheri Sheher) has preserved much of its 12th-century defensive walls.
The Old City, Baku’s medieval core, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site surrounded by 12th-century walls and brimming with Oriental architecture and history. Within the atmospheric walls, you'll find a maze of narrow alleys home to a few thousand residents as well as museums, monuments, art galleries, all sorts of eateries and much more. The place is like a living open-air museum!
Among the sights not to miss are the Maiden Tower, which is shrouded in mystery and legend - still today its date of construction and original purpose are not entirely known, though there are many ideas! Elsewhere, the 15th-century Shirvanshahs' Palace is the former residence of the Shirvanshah dynasty who ruled in the medieval period. It's a stunning architectural complex which besides the palace itself includes a mosque, mausoleum, hamam, divankhana, gates and reservoir.
Besides these two best-known sites there are plenty of hidden gems to discover, from the Museum of Miniature Books, whose collection includes the world's smallest book measuring just 2x2mm, to the Marionette Theatre, which stages performances of two Uzeyir Hajibeyli masterpieces: Leyli and Majnun and The Cloth Peddler. There's also a wealth of historic mosques (don't miss Mohammed Mosque!), caravanserais and hamams to explore, which sit side by side with small, independent art galleries, restaurants, rooftop bars and cafes.
