They represent how much conductivity the metal object under the coil has. Which allows you to get a idea of what it may be. Iron being the lowest and silver being the highest, with aluminum, lead, gold, copper being in the middle areas. That's the easiest way to get the idea of the VDI number representation on screen.

What do the numbers on the display represent?
Hi, technically I don’t know but certain targets usually land on a certain number. For example a quarter will show up as a 29 or 30
