I remember playing Magic at a time when it felt like the best sets were behind us and that Wizards was churning out nothing but garbage. The year was 1995. I first starting playing right after Legends came out, and it was crazy. Wizards had underestimated demand so drastically that stores were rationing booster packs to 2 or 3 per customer, if you could even find them. Revised had replaced Unlimited, and Lotuses were selling for the unheard of price of $150 each. And then came The Dark, which was OK, but it certainly wasn't Legends 2.0, and then Fallen Empires, which is rightfully known as one of the worst sets in the entire history of Magic, and then Ice Age, which appeared to be nothing more than a suckier re-boot of the game we already knew and loved. I know quite a few folks who thought that this was it, and sold their entire collection in '95 because the game was only going to keep getting worse. This included myself. I was graduating college, and wasn't sure I'd have time to keep playing, so I sold my entire collection (including an unlimited set of the P9) for 2k, and stopped playing for over 25 years.
My own son is in college now, where he was introduced to the game, so I decided to pick it up again. However, I'm only playing Pauper because to me, it's first and foremost a game - not an investment. Pauper lets me play on the cheap without worrying about the day to day flucations of the market. I view my cards as a sunk cost, and if the value of the cards on the open market went to 0, I could still have fun playing. It also feels a lot more like M:tG did back in the early 90s, before insane power creep led to games where you might as well resign if you hadn't won by turn 4.
As a general rule of thumb, the instant anything starts being sold exclusively as a collectible (be it baseball cards, coins, comic books, toys, or whatever) is the time to start buying. The rare and valuable stuff is what was produced before everyone anted to collect it.

Hot take on the lack of cash buying. I don’t think we’re at a bottom, I believe we have a lot of volatility in the market. Because there’s a lot of reprints and variants on cards. They’re likely taking a conservative approach, much like the entire community, and watching the market. I would be amazed if they continue to not buy for more than a couple weeks.

Inflation went crazy because of excess liquidity. The M2 money supply is still way too high and more people need to lose out before inflation is tamed and rates get lower. I don't expect the market to keep growing constantly, because Powell will probably do another 50 bps rate hike if things get out of hand again. Who knows. Rates are still inverted and we haven't had the crash yet, and whether that takes 1 year, 2 years, or more, being unleveraged and having excess cash to absorb things on the way down will be the way to go.

@@abrahamdrinkin2534 there's grumblings. The real kicker will be this: does the Canadian government want the easy 50%+ tax cut of the One Ring's sale, or do they want to take the fight and try to milk Hasbro in court? Birds and bushes and all that.
If they really stood by the spirit of their laws, it would be in their best interests to at least raise a stink. But it would be so much easier to just let it slide, take the money, pretend this isn't technically gambling. It's probably going to come down to which enterprising official(s) or office(s) thinks they can take it on and score points, which could blow up in their face(s) if the costly lawsuits go nowhere.
Hasbro would be forced to go for the throat, use the entirety of the resources at their disposal, as this would constitute a fundamental threat to their business practices. It would not be an easy fight. Even if it cost them more to defend the ring than they made selling the ring, it could be a wise move to shell out money now in order to secure these practices for future use.
Man, if the Unibomber wasn't already outed as a narcissistic, bloodthirsty murderer who sought to retroactively justify his misanthropic, homicidal worldview, I would say he was onto something with that little rant of his. Stopped clocks are right twice a day!

Hasbro is milking the Magic The Gathering cash cow as quickly and as hard as possible. They don't care that the udders are shriveling. They don't care what happens to the secondary market. They care about one thing - generating as much revenue for the coming quarter as possible. Magic the Gathering has proved incredibly resilient but I have to wonder if it can withstand the emphasis on short term gains rather than a long term strategy. I play FNM regularly and enjoy the game in a warm welcoming environment with players who love the game. I hope to be enjoying 5 years from now.

People are monkey see monkey do. Basically old magic sets through lots of unpredicted natural means became insanely valuable on the second market. Other people said "well I can just repeat the formula right? I'll buy sealed and wait X years". And since then it's a big mtg hot topic. The chase to replicate the natural value of original magic. If there was a popular discussion of "should we buy this and keep it" in 1993 then it probably would've never gotten nearly as valuable. People try, but can't force a replication of natural events by mimicking them.

We need experienced economists to tell us that what may seem like a good idea at first is not necessarily a good idea, due to possible economic fallout. Once again, I am asking the board of Hasbro and WotC to replace every single C-Suite employee. When that happens, I will 10x my shares, but if nothing changes, as each month goes by, I am closer and closer to dumping my Hasbro shares and investing in a company with intelligent leadership.

I don't think they care where we play or the LGS that's clear. But if no one is playing the game whose going to be buying the game. Perfect example is the decline and basically gone standard format

Magic's recent boom was based on the nostalgia of 30 something year olds getting hands on cheap money when interest rates were at record lows. That's all it is. You invested in what you know and now have to catch the falling knife. MTG, like growth stocks, like the housing market, like bitcoin, is a game where you're chasing the profits of the past that are already gone. There could be another cheap money "business cycle boom" for magic cards, but I doubt it. 55 year old men are not going to gamble on it again when they look in their garage and see some sealed boxes of a random set of innistrad in it as their failed get rich quick scheme. I know people who are holding onto magic cards right now because they want to pass them onto their kids as some store of wealth. It's almost impossible for that to be a reality. Just play the game.
