Today I bought a relic of the battle of Anzio from the flee market at Chesterfield England. An M33 Italian helmet with 29th division insignia in black to the fore. Judging by the gore stains on the liner the wearer received a head wound.

Rare black M40 by the Dusseldorf factory with Standard bearer decal on the left & partial SS decal on the right. Also M35 which belonged to Hauptsturmfuhrer Alfred Schroder SSFHA

They weren't classified as aryans by the Germans, and as such the Italian SS legion was never seen as an SS division, but as a division of the SS, which means a military unit that falls under the command of the SS but isn't made up by proper SS men. A peculiar thing is that the men of the 2 battalions sent to the anzio front were considered to be deserving of all the rights and duties of proper SS men all because of their fighting competence.
