Hi, me old mucker, I been following your first few videos, and I'm impressed.
I've ordered my kit, can wait to get started, I think we might have the same level of experience. You've certainly built up my confidence. You're doing a grand job. Many thanks for the help.

rHa! here is a very easy way to set up a turning either cast or already machined: using a dead centre which has a Centre hole on the taper end, then with a live centre in tailstock and the pointy end fitted into the casting then with dial indicator reading off the end closes to the casting, you easily can set up the hole quickly without running your dial pointer onto a rough casting. Works a treat!
Nice work Andrew. Enjoy watching your work ethics. Not afraid to give it ago! Cheers

Hi Gary. Many thanks for the suggestion, but I just can't work it out. Can you explain in more detail so a novice like me (a numptee) can understand it?
      All the best.

@@learningturningmetal Andrew I think Garry means that you engage the pointed end of the dead centre into the hole in the casting and engage the live centre into the hole in the other end of the dead centre. After you close the tailstock up You can now run your dial indicator on the outside of the dead centre adjacent to the casting giving you a smooth reading which will average out the shape of the hole in the casting. You would have to be using a dead centre with a diameter larger than the hole. I haven’t tried It but it makes sense. Did you purchase a 100 mm chuck to hold the cylinder?

Hi Philip. Thanks for explaining. That makes sense. Yeah it was a 100mm 4 jaw chuck (Chinese origin) with a backplate for the mini lathe. Purchased from Arc Euro Trade. The chuck also fits onto my SC4 lathe.
      Cheers

When measuring what to take off either end do you take into account the position of the ports? Say if the ports arent cast exactly in the center and are slightly to one side. i messed my first cylinder up and im now over thinking everything. Long time lingerer, love your channel. alex.

Hi Alex. From memory I don't think I considered the position of the ports. Probably more important to get the outside as symetrical as possible.
      Cheers
