Yeah the slashing of commons has me wondering what that will mean with the secondary prices. Will one be able to level up variants would make commons even more desirable.
There are so many factors involved to make any character / rarity desirable either through games or stashing when you need certain ones. The Commons have a lower stat-o-meter which just from that makes them not as effective in games compared to higher rarities. But the low mint count helps the Commons big time!

Yes, the Commons might not have a high stat-o-meter but they are very scarce. As well they of course look fantastic!

Between Common, Rare, and Legendary - I think the Commons are by far the best looking ones.
