      The thing about aro aces is that when we find someone we really like the company of, we want to share and do stuff that makes us comfortable or happy, anything but romantic stuff. Because we can only love platonically.

      This objectively bad Show; all taste and opion aside; it was just terrible.
      Written by those that have gotten objectively wrong what Mysteries are and how Detective-Stories work. Its so bizzare to me, how most have realized this and left, at least in S-4, but some just never realized... how awful the quality was.
      Without opinion involved, i ask: Why have you not noticed?
      The massive, massive problem-mountain, high like the Sky, big enough to cause Hbomberguy make a hour-long Essay about it? I mean, yeah, he goes on too long about explaining who Moffat is, but still: Even with that, it's THE Video all Sherlock-Fans need. Just skip the first 2-3 Parts and watch them at the End, that should fix the Issue with the Video.
      Go, Sherlock-Fans, go.

      @@nenmaster5218 Excuse me, when did I say I was a fan ? I watched the show a while ago, and I liked it for the persons I watched it with. It brings me back memories of those times. We used to ship Sherlock and Watson. And that’s it.
      So please answer my question, when did I say I liked the show ? Do you want to debate so bad that you look for fans ? It is a little too much, I don’t like how you approached me. Even if I find debates interesting, I don’t want one with you because of your comment. I feel insulted somehow. Plus I didn’t quite understand your comment, for my mother tongue is French. Your desperate need of debate on such a small show is kind of ridiculous in my opinion. And you watching videos about Sherlock Holmes from the BBC just to try and debate with fans proves how desperate you are.

      @@HelenaAlbaValdes I’m talking especially in fandoms. The vast majority of content made by fans is shipping stuff, particularly fan fiction. It’s fine to a point, but when they take what few canonically aroace characters exist and make them allo, it’s very frustrating. I have a similar problem with modern Doctor Who. The Doctor was always aroace in Classic Who, then RTD brought in the “romance” with Rose. Now all a certain section of the fandom cares about is the Doctor having a relationship with their companion. I could also go on to talk about the fetishisation of gay men and trans people by straight female fandom, and the associated hatred of female characters, but that’s a whole other argument.

    Been a long time since I've seen Sherlock, and I hadn't realized how much -Ace phobia- Aphobia was in it 😅. Like, yes, emotions and relationships are important, but stating that someone is incomplete without a *romantic* relationship is so incredibly invalidating and completely undermines the importance of friendships and family dynamics--which are *also* relationships and tend to be more enduring.

    • @devinaghose9318
      @devinaghose9318 3 ปีที่แล้ว +455

      I THINK, that's more of an ARO phobia instead, what would be acephobia is when people try to convince u that ur life is incomplete without Sexual attraction or having sex, and ur love for ur partner isnt real cuz you dont have sex.

    • @mrsfahrenheit
      @mrsfahrenheit 3 ปีที่แล้ว +259

      what? I don’t think it’s ace phobia or aro phobia... I’m asexual myself and I’ve never seen it like that or felt offended. John just wants to help and wants Sherlock to open up to people because in *his* understanding of the world one is incomplete without a sexual/ romantic relationship.
      That’s probably what most non- asexual or non- aromantic people would think just because they simply cannot imagine themselves living that way because *they* experience sexual attraction.
      It doesn’t have to mean they’re acephobic ..
      I really don’t want to talk trash about your feelings and say they don’t count but I think you’re really just overreacting in that case.
      I feel like a lot of people get offended SO quickly nowadays that it’s really really hard not to- and I think it’s just ridiculous.

It was more just noticing a few not-ace/aro-friendly lines. Like, one does not need to have malicious intent to say something invalidating, particularly with ace people--we generally face erasure rather than persecution. So, the line where John says that if Sherlock doesn’t have a romantic relationship he will never be complete as a human being...didn't age particularly well 😅. Yes, the statement was true from John's perspective--but that doesn't make it true, and some people would find it genuinely hurtful and wind up thinking something is truly wrong with them and that they're broken. I'm fortunate enough that I was never one of these people, but having a bunch of little messages like this imbedded in media does affect others.
      Lol, sorry for the ramble, I do see where you're coming from, but I do think certain lines and attitudes are a bit problematic--tho not to such a degree that it impacted my personal enjoyment of the show 😊 (it just shows a lack of education on the writers/characters front because how can it "all be fine" as John says in that first episode, when being ace/aro doesn't make u a complete human being? 😉)

    I always hated what this rendition of Sherlock Holmes has done with Irene Adler. In the books she was kind of just a woman that helped Sherlock realize women were capable of being just as intelligent as himself. She wasn't something he ever found sexually enticing, in fact John Watson in the books makes it very clear that he is not so sure Sherlock is capable of much in the ways of romantic/sexual bonds. But a lot of modern renditions of the classic story have made their story into some kind of star crossed love affair.

    i'm ace & greyromantic and it's always pissed me off when people try to convince me sherlock was sexually attracted to irene. i don't see it that way at all, but maybe i'm projecting onto a fictional character? idk man. personally i interpreted sherlock's actions towards irene as purely for-the-case -- i strongly, strongly believe he was NOT attracted to her in any way other than respect for her intelligence, and never will be. but people can write their fanfiction, idgaf about that, it's nice people are being creative & it's called fan-fiction for a reason. it's the trying-to-convince-me part that's annoying.
    Sherlock and Molly? I never saw it tbh. in the later seasons i believe Sherlock respects her a little more & maybe they're friends, but attraction? nah. completely and utterly one-sided on Molly's part.
    As for Sherlock and John, I think there is a love there, especially on Sherlock's side. I don't think it's sexual or romantic, but rather a deep, platonic love that keeps them together. There's clearly no one else in Sherlock's life like John, and after literally all of John's romantic relationships fail, he ends up back with Sherlock. They're always going to be in each other's orbit regardless of what happens, which is why i genuinely think Johnlock is the most realistic ship in the show -- if you remove the heterosexual lens and watch the show while taking Sherlock's aro/asexuality into account, it's clearly a love story.
    If anyone has any other opinions i'd love to hear them :)

      Genuinely interesting to hear your thoughts :)
      Personally I've noticed that how I interpreted the scenes depended some on what I wanted to see? You mention a lens; I switch mine in the sense that sometimes I would like a love story, sometimes I want character development, and sometimes I focus on how I relate to the characters (obviously that changes, because you are never in the same place in life, are you? anyway). First time i definitely saw the chemistry between sherlock and irene, but the lack of it in this video is just as clear to me, and I kind of prefer this version :p But I always saw Irene as a manipulator and someone who wanted and needed control at all times, not so much a - I think someone said temptress. Like, I imagine that she goes about dressing for many of her clients the same way she does for Sherlock. Her partner knows what she means when she says battle dress, so she must use it regularly.
      For Molly I always loved her, she is a great, subtle character, and I always just wanted her to get what she wanted. For that reason I sometimes read into the scenes that Sherlock is falling for her or will eventually. Because you can, *if* you want to. Like in the very last episode with the coffin (trying to avoid spoilers) it is clear that she at least means a boat load to him even if it isn't romantic. But honestly, he is also very mean to her and I hope she finds better x3
      Definitely agree with you on Johnlock. Very hard for me to read anything else into it, then that they are perfect partners like partners in a crime series, nothing romantic or sexual necessarily, but they will under no circumstances end up in jail without each other, they just have each others back, no discussions, no apologies, no nothing, it's not up for debate, they just do. Not stating that as fact, just my interpretation.
      On a side note I also love Lestrade's dynamic with Sherlock, very protective sort of dad-like. It's very sweet. He just sort of accepts that that is Sherlock and there is noting he can do about it.

    Watson always interested me in this series, in regards to Sherlocks sexuality. Cuz he really seems like he was portrayed to be accidentally phobic, in a very interesting way. Cuz while most characters were insisting on romance/intimacy being inherently important, Watson truly seemed to think it would be important for Sherlock, specifically. Like a lot of it seemed to stem from how Watson saw Sherlocks interactions with Irene Adler, and feeling that it could be good for Sherlock. Not just "romance is good, because its necessary."
    Not that it makes it any less of a frustrating thing to do to people. And not that it excuses it. Its still a form of phobic behavior, even if it comes from a place of well-meaning and care for the person. Its just interesting, for me, to see acephobia presented in different ways. Not just the same one-note bullshit.

    • @fangurks
      @fangurks 2 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      Agree! People need to realize that good characters can have bad flaws that do not reflect on the show, but make them realistic. How many theoretically good people say or do harmful things on accident? Saying phobic things, for example?
      Besides, I wouldn't even necessarily say that Watson was phobic because he meant well. I think he asked Sherlock a lot about it because he didn't get it, and the only thing that might have been an actual problematic statement, was him stating that romantic love would complete Sherlock as a person - which was out of a place of grief, after having lost HIS romantic life, and projecting, as opposed to well-meaning.

    Once, as I was trying to explain how I was ace, the person I was speaking to said that it didn't exist because sexuality is based on what you *like* and not what you dislike. I'll never forget the hollow feeling, and still to this day, it hurts on such a raw level. I don't feel included with the LGBTQ+ community, as I've been told that I don't have to suffer as they do. And I don't feel included with those who are 'straight' either. As I do not look for a companion for sexual relations. I just feel as if I'm broken and alone and worthless.
    Then I watch this show, and for the first time, I relate to a character. I don't see many movies where someone is not in a romantic relationship and it's OK that they aren't interested. The media portrays such things as something wrong with the person. But, I don't know how to be what other people are, in the case of wanting sex. I just don't want it. If I'm completely honest, I'm squicked out by it. It's disgusting to me, that I might have sex with another person.
    I'm told by men that they can change me, I'm told by women that I haven't met the right person yet. Must we desire another person to be complete? Must we have sex to be a whole person? I was born alone. And ultimately I will die alone. None can follow me through everything I have gone through, and everything that I will go through in my life. How can I be incomplete if I have always been and always will be alone?
    I have a few people who are my persons. Much like how a cat adopts you suddenly and it's just how life is sometimes. I love my family, but I feel distant from them. They feel things in a different way than I do. I watched this series and felt such overwhelming relief. It was completely unexpected and made me say 'oh' in surprise as if having the wind knocked out of me.
    If there is anyone out there who feels the same way, what you feel is valid. You are not broken for feeling this way. No one can tell you who to love or how to love them. That is something you do on your own. Your choice, not for anyone else to dictate. I hope that you know that it is ok, to be yourself. You are beautiful and precious.

    just here to say that Irene and Sherlock's story was infinitely more interesting and well-done when Arthur Conan Doyle wrote it. Irene was intelligent and powerful without having to be sexualized in any way, and she actually beat Sherlock in the end. He was a bit of a misogynist until that point (always treated women he met with respect, but privately talked about how he preferred dealing with men) but after that, he realized he was wrong. It's never spelled out that Irene directly changed him, but he never complained about women again after that story. I think Irene as a dominatrix is incredibly sexist and stupid. I like this show but I hated that episode.

    This is personally terrifying for me, an asexual person, as I now fear the upcoming conversations with my colleagues in adulthood if they're going to be this sex driven. I mean dear god, can not a single soul think of any other meaningful conversation topics other than sex?? Let me stay a teenager, I fear adults and their weird sex.
    Edit: Oh my sweet cakes I let this get way too out of hand-
    So, for the record, I do want to say I wrote this in a very sarcastic sense. I am ace (I think), but I can handle myself when it comes to these sorts of conversations, I just meant to exaggerate the sympathy felt at the fact that people wouldn't stop talking to Sherlock about sex. (And that people are weird but anyways-)
    On that note, I do sincerely appreciate everyone who commented advice about these conversations and it's touching that you all wanted to help. I do hope I didn't worry all of you though, that was not my intention in the slightest.
    (Next time I'll make sure to put /j at the end of a comment like this)

      I've known I'm ace for two years( I'm 19 now) and the conversations don't get easier . It's better to only tell people you completely trust and feel comfortable around . And if you don't like where the conversation is headed, say it straight away and be direct.

      Well...the only thing I can suggest is try yourself to offer other topics related to hobbies or plans for the future or something that happened that was interesting for you (like, last day I baked a cheese cake). Or If they are constantly talking about sex try to cut It off in someway...this aren't the best tips but I hope It helps... I just never had that problem because my friends don't talk that much about that and because when they do I end up asking lots of questions that help me understand It better and I like the conversation.

      I've found... and I have no idea if this is true for others... that sex comes up in conversation among adults about the same way as work, or the house, or the kids, or mortgages or... things that are exceptionally uninteresting unless you have it yourself. The topics are very common at dinners with family or friends where most within the same age group just have that in common. It's really superficial when you think about it. I mean the next level up is talking about the weather to find common ground :p
      Really, all of them are just topics and you can change those if you want or find groups of people with whom you share interests and you will talk about those instead :)
      I'm 30 now and still don't put a label on what I am unless I have to be clear, quickly (closest is ace), and I have found that teenagers talk about sex a lot because it's new, a little older you reserve the conversation to parties with alcohol, older still it stops being interesting to talk about with a larger group of people.
      In short, you will be just fine :) I don't know if that helped. I hope it did. Maybe I just needed to flaunt my own opinion... but I hope it helped anyway.

I feel like he cares a lot about her in a platonic way, but she's in love with him romantically and Sherlock genuinely seems to feel bad for not being able to return it. And that's very relatable.

    What I find the most poethic about all this is that they keep telling us that “maybe” if Sherlock found romance he would change for the better. But the truth is he would always remain as he is.
    And it ends up being that the only person he needed to feel complete while still remaining as himself was his friend, John Watson, who knew Sherlock, and always accepted him. Sometimes, all you need is a platonic relationship that gives you everything you couldn’t find anywhere else. And that’s hard as heck to find in real life

    First of all, I LOVE THIS!! Sherlock as aro-ace makes him so relatable for me. All his *internally screaming in aro-ace* faces here all make me go "same bro!!!"
    Second of all, I hope you don't mind if I rant a bit. Honestly, one of the things I didn't like about this series is how they handled Irene Adler 😭 I really don't understand why a lot of Sherlock Holmes adaptations try to make her in love with Sherlock when that was definitely NOT the case in the original stories. Sometimes it doesn't bother me as much (Moriarty the Patriot comes to mind and the RDJ films just made me roll my eyes but it wasn't incredibly annoying). But in this series? It physically pains me, to be honest. The forced "sexual tension" between her and Sherlock just makes me want to scream every time I have to watch it.
    Isn't all the platonic love he has to give enough to show the audience that he's not cold-hearted? It just frustrates me how I used to love this show so much before I realized I was aro-ace only to notice there were a lot of aphobic stuff in it, especially surrounding Sherlock.

    • @anyanaylor
      @anyanaylor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      I totally agree. The og Irene was supposed to be so interesting to him because she was like the one person as smart as him. I do appreciate from this series though that Sherlock doesn't reciprocate her feelings. Otherwise it would be a very messy "yeah, he's mostly ace... but then he met the right person 😍" which is always so so much worse in my opinion because it's just like no. No, no, no. That's not how it works.

    This is what the JohnLock troopers didn't understand. To Sherlock, it just doesn't matter, he isn't wired that way. People like him exist irl and are just as human as the rest of us, but they know how to love all-consumingly (Sherlock has extraordinary affection for John, Mrs Hudson, and his family to the extend of jeopardizing his safety) and value platonic companionship

      Never listen to Sherlocks wonderful wedding speech or should I better say love letter to John? He composed this beautiful waltz for John and Mary although his heart must have broken into pieces. He is anything else than aromantic. Sherlock is demisexual/demiromantic.
      And when someone is family to me means always more than just a good friend.
      One a sided Johnlock actually don't exist.
