As a disabled fellow that once prided himself as being a pretty competent DIY'er and "jack of all trades", I kind of live vicariously (at least mechanically) through you! I too, was usually "budget limited" and fortunately my dad taught me the value of adapting what's available to work. He was a farm boy and also a product of the depression era, so he knew how to "make due". Thanks for what you do Mustie1, I truly enjoy and appreciate your videos!! :^)

Used to work for an International Harvester dealer years ago. Specialized in Cub Cadet repairs. Very little actual repairs needed on the old Cubs. Overhauled a bunch of the Kohler engines that were already 30 to 40 years old. Bore them .10 over and good to go for another 40 years. The butterfly shaft on the carb would wear making idle hard to adjust. Carbon buildup on the exhaust would cause intermittent miss. Overall they were built to last. I would not buy a new one today. The rear end was the same as they used in the bigger Cub Lowboys.
Robert thanks for bringing back memories of my Para'n... French for Godfather.. He was the parts manager for Lanier International Co. in Abbeville Louisiana for almost 40 years.... Most of the time he didn't look in a book for the part you needed, he just went to the back and got the part you needed..... I remember riding the Cubs back then as a young boy and cutting some grass while I was at it... That was the deal if you want to drive a Cub you cut the grass too......... That was in the very early 70's Plus Tard Mon Ami ...........
This was the video I was hoping to find! I serviced my "non-serviceable" hydrostat transmission - and adjusted my 'cackling' valves on my Craftsman LT3000 with 20hp INTEK Briggs single popper. 16 years old and still looks (and now) RUNS like NEW! Thanks, Mustie!
You my fine sir qualify for ownership of any Harley from about 1985 and earlier you're mighty handy with a wrench and rigging up something to run and get you by exactly what's required for ownership of a late date Harley lol!! It's a compliment!!!
Tnx fer this video Mustie, I have this same mower.(piece of junk! as I mentioned in last video) anyway I picked up a lot of pointers from both video's I'm 76 and don't do as much as I used to so you have a tendency to forget a lot of things. good reminder on the valves. last time I did that was on my craftmans. should have put new engine in that one. before I bought the cub. had that 21 years and only one spindle. 2 deck belts and one drive belt in 21 yrs. cub 5 deck belts and one drive belt in 5 yrs I think that speaks for itself. thanks again for your time expertise. you're a natural and great at this keep it up Please!. thanks again Mustie for sharing.

Hi, good video as usual. That mower has MTD written all over it. I've given up on MTD due to the poor quality of materials, and the amount of repairs I've had to do on a 4 year old lawn tractor. I'll keep my '94 Craftsman running for as long as I can.
Yeah I think the 90's models AYP built models are ok if you maintain them. My father has a basic LT1000 15.5hp, hydro, 42" deck from '99 and it still is serving him ok with only a deck belt change, both deck spindles, and oil, spark plug, and air filter changes with untouched valves. It's not used lightly, it has to mow 3 acres of yard.
I love you. I found by looking how to fix my string trimmer. Ive become addicted to your videos. Keep doing what you do. I love it. Learned a lot. Even fixed my string trimmer after i sent it to a fella like yourself who works on small motors. He couldn't fix it but i could. Very rewarding i must say!
I have the same year and model cub cadet tractor and I used to have a problem with the generator not charging the battery properly. Found out that one of the wires going into the generator wasn't installed properly at the factory. Had a local lawnmower shop fix it and it's been fine ever since.

Check the leakdown and fuel system and ignition system, and belts and spindle etc. If fixable, fix it and sell it! Replace deck wheels and blades. Change the oil and filter. If the overall condition is horrible, use it for parts.
Manufacturers recommend you engage the blade belt at the LOWEST possible speed without stalling.. Do NOT rev the engine way up before engaging! That wears belts much, much more.
@@AudioGardenSlave123 My 1991 Snapper 1550LX requires full throttle engagement as well. I rebuilt and restored the mower but this belt from 1997 is still holding.
Just replaced the 3 blades and 2 spindles on my son's zero turn Cub Cadet. The blades were damaged but the spindles that the blades bolt on to were worn out. The bearings were growling when they were spun by hand...(no belt attached). One year old ! Of course it was sitting all winter in a heated space but they still were kaput ! They don't last at all ! I refused to pay for the spindles and they warranted them.
This was a great video and timely as I am looking at a 1997 2130. My stumbling point is what battery fits in there. I have a 31 yo JD 175 and the hydro gave up the ghost. I can have a used transmission shipped here from Ohio but that Eaton will be the same age as the one in it currently. I never had a chance to tackle it as you did here because a mechanic friend of mine hauled it away to his house on a trailer. 88 JD or 97 CC is my quandary. Used is cheaper than new so I go used. If it lasts 10 years I got my moneys worth. Nice Plymouth and VW.
i've had cc 12 years its the most maintenance machine iv ever had constantly replacing pto belts and blade spindle greasing but its the best cutting 54 inch deck
I bought a Cub Cadet XT1 42" this spring and after the first mowing the dang thing was squeaking really bad, I swear they must ship those front axles without any grease at all...I went through and greased the wheels on the front and the noise went away. Wonder how many people have never checked that and end up with the front bushing issue like you found on this machine.
Rather than replace the rear tires on mine I just put inner tubes in. Not easy. I think the tires are $70 or so each the tubes less than $10. A better belt is worth it. I bought a less expensive belt on ebay and replaced it in a year. The prior belt lasted more than ten years. I also put in the metal bushings on the front rims. And a relay.
Glad cub cadet had models with bearings in the front wheels again my 2017 xt2 has bearings in the front wheels but if you get the xt1 they have bushings in those there the cheaper line
Had a John Deere L130 with a similar TrashTorque trans in it...it was fine until it got hot. I replaced the pump (cheaper than a new machine), but it only lasted another season. I'm curious if this has happened to this Cadet...do you still have it. Love these vids...I used to do exactly what you do with an old Craftsman, Cub, John Deere, and Gravely walk-behind. Sold them all and got a new Cub Cadet...hoping for the best!

Probably should remove the blower cover and check the upper engine pan bolts. These engines loosen up the bolts and it will crack the block by the push rods.
Nice Fix. I hate loose wheels and always get new bearings and shim them where possible. That one needs new front spindles perhaps and alignment. You might rotate that Right side tire with Tread outwards. Lots of profit in that one. Did you recheck trans fluid level? Sometimes it takes several hours for the oil to migrate down to the plungers etc. Great narration.
The hardest start of a big bike trip I ever made was having to take off from a dry garage into the rain. The second hardest ride was taking the bike out to look at Christmas lights...if it's warm enough to ride a bike at night in December, using looking at Christmas lights as an excuse was just wrong.
Seems like the newer homeowner grade tractors are only good for about 500 hours. I bought an old 90's Simplicity off Craigs List, that thing is a tank.

The key switch on that lawnmower is similar to mine it has a yellow button the caution button you trying to be yellow push the button you can put it in reverse while cutting grass I have a 6 month old Troy-Bilt Bronco 46-inch cut

My Cubdet is the early years of MTD so it still has the Cub Cadet parts with some cosmetic changes. The one in the video is all MTD. Sure could see the differences. Lots of cheapening in the industry.
I agree that modern engines have a lot of junk attached and overcomplex systems, but there are tools to access the engine computer and give you an idea of whats going on. So diagnosis would not be too bad. But your not really into modern junk, thats understandable, im much the same, you can improve an engine but i think basic fourstroke engines work well anyway. Old english engines are a bit crude but easy enough to fix, i think thats one of the reasons my old mate loves his triumph herald, simple fourstroke :-D. Dont i waffle a lot LOL :-D
Many moons ago I bout a 40" hover mower from an auction for £5. There are not many 5 Hp 40" hover mowers about. I didn't find out the air governor was stuck wide open until I eventually started it. It hovered about a foot off the lawn. Not for long though, I couldn't let go of it and OOPS! bits everywhere. I'm just glad a blade didn't come off. Great video's, you really do have a lot of patience and do a nice job. I've always wanted a Ford Mustang but you drive on the wrong side of the road, how on earth do you draw your sword to stab someone. Napoleon was left handed that's why. LOL
Do you have a video that goes how to level and fix issues with lawn mower decks on riding mowers? I have a Yard Machine (MTD) and the deck level at its highest setting just seems to be a short cut, going through the levels when I get to 2 and 1 2 is already sitting on the ground.
I would love to fiddle with and sell on some old mowers here but realized that even though everyone has a grassy yard, NOBODY has their own mowers here. Pretty much zero mowers available on craigslist. :/
BTW mustie as a cub owner myself if you want to go backwards while cutting, turn key to yellow position AND push that triangle shaped switch. only way to do it on these models. i mean i spose you could bypass this, but heck its less work to do it that way. but job well done sir. job well done
its got cruise control on it also, when in motion, you press like you were setting the parking brake, and it locks pedal in that position, to stop it, you either hit the brake lever on left or one of the motion pedals
It would have been worthwhile to put new factory greaseable bearings in the front axles and then set Toe-in. I don't hear a death rattle, perhaps get new spindles too and sell for $800.
Any idea why a ride on with a hydrostatic trans would make a whining noise when moving it either forward or reverse? Would it be something dragging ? The mower has less than 60 hours on it, it is an MTD Yardman 900 series 42" deck 17hp Koehler motor. Help!
I had a hydro 42 inch Murray that the drive lasted 19 years. Reverse always made a moaning noise and I suppose it has something to do with limiting the speed. The trans stopped pulling, I took it apart and cleaned, inspected and measured everything. I could find nothing worn or wrong. It just quit. Bought a 50 year old Wheel Horse and haven't looked back.......
we grease our front wheels in our cub cadet xt1 on a weekly basis. non the less, it is always dry and the those cheepie plastic bushings are ready for replacement (at least) once a year
Mustie I see you get a lot of your product for free from people who just don't want to be bothered with it anymore! I live up here in NB Canada and up here it is a little province and people give very little away generally they sell stuff broken at what you might get it if it were running. I laugh as they usually say on there ad's " I got a good running generator for 600.00 only thing is it is not making power". I am exaggeration some but you get the idea!
I have the cub cadet xt with the 50inch deck with three blades. In heavy grass, the center blade slips drastically, even stalling completely. Any ideas what I can do to fix that problem

My Toro manual says to engage the deck at full speed only. Ten years later, still going strong on original belts and clutch.

I caint and won't work on these small engines. Simple my foot! They are very complex and tricky.

The front tires on my son's LTX1045 are wearing exactly like that.
Ooow floppy valves, no maintenance for years :-(, i bet that made it quieter :-), Dispite the multiple problems its a nice machine now :-D.

One of the reasons I prefer AYP built machines over MTD is that at least AYP uses metal bushings in the wheels instead of plastic.
I wish my Husqvarna YTH2348 had adjustable steering drag links. it has 'HORRIBLE' toeing out issues.

Found sealed bearings for my JD L111 to eliminate the plastic bushings. Not too bad.
BTW mustie as a cub owner myself if you want to go backwards while cutting, turn key to yellow position AND push that triangle shaped switch. only way to do it on these models. i mean i spose you could bypass this, but heck its less work to do it that way. but job well done sir. job well done

its got cruise control on it also, when in motion, you press like you were setting the parking brake, and it locks pedal in that position, to stop it, you either hit the brake lever on left or one of the motion pedals

It would have been worthwhile to put new factory greaseable bearings in the front axles and then set Toe-in. I don't hear a death rattle, perhaps get new spindles too and sell for $800.
the front axle would have bin a good thing to use your new lay to put sealed barring on it

when was brash bushings crasppy? my MTD 990 is from the 70's and has plastic bushings.
Is their another carbereta to fit a125cc Briggs and stretton than the plastic one they fit in the uk

as for how long it will last is unknown. but it gives a fine cut, and its fast.

Any idea why a ride on with a hydrostatic trans would make a whining noise when moving it either forward or reverse? Would it be something dragging ? The mower has less than 60 hours on it, it is an MTD Yardman 900 series 42" deck 17hp Koehler motor. Help!
I had a hydro 42 inch Murray that the drive lasted 19 years. Reverse always made a moaning noise and I suppose it has something to do with limiting the speed. The trans stopped pulling, I took it apart and cleaned, inspected and measured everything. I could find nothing worn or wrong. It just quit. Bought a 50 year old Wheel Horse and haven't looked back.......

seems like most of these new mowers never get greased on the front axles originally,i think its a conspiracy LOL
we grease our front wheels in our cub cadet xt1 on a weekly basis.
non the less, it is always dry and the those cheepie plastic bushings are ready for replacement (at least) once a year
did you top off the transmission or just leave the little oil in it that you started with????
Mustie I see you get a lot of your product for free from people who just don't want to be bothered with it anymore! I live up here in NB Canada and up here it is a little province and people give very little away generally they sell stuff broken at what you might get it if it were running. I laugh as they usually say on there ad's " I got a good running generator for 600.00 only thing is it is not making power". I am exaggeration some but you get the idea!

I have the cub cadet xt with the 50inch deck with three blades.
In heavy grass, the center blade slips drastically, even stalling completely.
Any ideas what I can do to fix that problem

Too expensive. Those bearings would cost you $10 apiece. Yeah I know 50 cent bearings have a big mark-up. Greed, my friend.
