He was always wonderful to watch. This part and the title song was the only part of the movie that was any good.
Even though the film was a failure at the Box Office, at least the producers gave Gene a showcase to make a slight comeback. Of course, they had to modernize the music for Olivia considering it was 1980, so ELO was the backing band. Gotta have the best of both worlds.

Many critics will tell you that Xanadu was pretty much a flop and be able to articulate all of the reasons why it's a poor film. That said, I love watching a man who arguably could be the entertainer of the century. His skill at acting, dancing, singing, directing, producing, writing, choreography, composing, his talent as a clown, there was just no artist that was such an accomplished talent in so many disciplines. I adored watching him in everything he did, he brings such an element of down to earth class and honesty to every role, even the non-comedic, non-musical role of E.K. Hornbeck in Inherit the Wind. If you watch dancers closely you will often see them glance at their feet, you really have to work to catch Gene ever looking down there. His glance is most often looking up, looking at his partners or looking at us. I have heard him admit that he was cruel and demanding to his co-workers, and it shows in the body of his work through their excellence. I adored Olivia Newton-John, since her very earliest days. To see her dance with Kelly is just moving, I can only imagine how it must have inspired her to be working with an international legend at the twilight of his career. He could still move and make me feel like it was easy for him, and wish that I could move 1/10 as gracefully as he. I pray you are all at peace and that all of us find that peace at the very end. Xanadu is a series of what would become MTV music videos...very loosely stitched together by people that were not actors (except Gene Kelly).

Individually each number either pretty good or very good. Contrast it to Grease and you can see Grease was anchored by actors and writers. This and The Jazz Singer mostly a great pop singer and some record and concert producers
He was given his break by Judy Garland who starred with him several times. He said, more than once, that she was the greatest entertainer of all time. But he was right up there too.

It's a terrible movie with the greatest soundtrack ever. You have to turn your brain off and just enjoy the music / choreography.
Agreed. Pretty bad movie, but the music is fine (I have the soundtrack and play it from time to time). I will say the movie also features one of the icons of Los Angeles, the Pan Pacific Auditorium, before it burned down about 10 years later.

I had the LP of the Xanadu soundatrack as a kid and memorized every single song...even though as an adult I really hate musicals! 🤣☺
Did love this film regardless of its negativity. I think Gene Kelly wanted to bring back the good ol' Hollywood musical as those days had long gone. Thought he was phenomenal at 68 & what a great dancer he was. This movie is more poignant now with the recent passing of our darling Olivia, still can't believe it. Thought she was extra beautiful in Xanadu & the songs were wonderful too. She has now been reunited with Gene hopefully & I think she believed in the afterlife.
