  • The 1955 Chevrolet was a revolutionary vehicle. It was a break with the past, and the first real new vehicle of the modern Post World War II (WWII) era for General Motors. From the bottom up, inside and out this car was a trendsetter. The most important Chevrolet ever built, the 1955 Chevy set the world on notice that this was the car to beat. While its styling is no longer in vogue, its small block V8 is still inspiring engine design at GM today.
The Chevrolet small-block engine is a series of automobile V8 engines built by the Chevrolet Division of General Motors using the same basic small (for a V8) engine block. Retroactively referred to as the "Generation I" small-block, it is distinct from subsequent "Generation II" LT and "Generation III" LS engines. Engineer Ed Cole, who would later become GM President, is credited with leading the design for this engine.
Production of the original small-block began in the fall of 1954 for the 1955 model year with a displacement of 265 cu in (4.3 L), growing incrementally over time until reaching 400 cu in (6.6 L) in 1970. Several intermediate displacements appeared over the years, such as the 283 cu in (4.6 L) that was available with mechanical fuel injection, the 327 cu in (5.4 L) (5.3L), as well as the numerous 350 cu in (5.7 L) versions. Introduced as a performance engine in 1967, the 350 went on to be employed in both high- and low-output variants across the entire Chevrolet product line.

I believe this really wasn't GM hype...the 1955 Chevrolet was the first car to not share design (in major components) with any previous GM model...even Hydra-Matic division came up with two new automatic transmissions-what became the 350 and hotter 375-for its new engines, along with new Muncie manual 3 and 4-speed transmissions.

That "level braking" is total BULLS**T. If you look closely starting @4:06, you will notice that during the braking sequence of all the cars EXCEPT the Chevrolet, the blades of grass are moving in the breeze, but STILL when the Chevy is braking. The film is stopped just before the nose dive would occur! CHEAP TRICK BY CHEVROLET!
