Distance between two parallel chords is not always half of sum of chords. Its coincidence that in this question this worked. Take an example two parallel opposite chords of 6 cm each and rad. 5 cm. Distance between chords will be 8 cm not (6+6)/2 = 6cm
Another example - rad 5 cm and chords length of 6 cm and 2 cm in opposite side. As per your formula Distance between chords would be 4 cm which is not true.
Similarly difference formula also does not true always.
However trick is very helpful in solving questions in short time. Great efforts!
